  • BUT I DO BACKUPS!

  • WHEN DID YOU LAST BACKUP?

    ?

  • IF YOUR BACKUP DISK FAILS?

Which you will most likely realise only when you need it

  • HOW LIKELY IS A HARD DRIVE FAILURE?

  • WHAT ABOUT THE CLOUD?

Protects against hard drive failure, doesnt protect against you deleting a file

  • CLEAR T H I N K I N G THE RULE OF THREE

You must have 3 copies of your data

    CLEAR T H I N K I N GCLEAR T H I N K I N G

    CLEAR T H I N K I N GCLEAR T H I N K I N GCLEAR T H I N K I N GCLEAR T H I N K I N GCLEAR T H I N K I N G

  • THE RULE OF THREE One copy of your data on your computer

At least one copy of your data on your backup disk - ideally with multiple file versions

One copy of your data physically somewhere else

    Note: THIS IS A MINIMUM

  • USE BACKUP SOFTWARE Just copying will work, but backup software is better

What if your hard drive fails while you are copying?

What if your original copy of a file gets corrupted? You then copy the corrupted file

What if there is a bit error while copying the file? (Consumer drives have a hard error rate of 1 in every10E14 bits - around every 11.5 TB of data)

Backup software will protect against these to ensure the integrity of the backup

Backup software wiil keep multiple versions of files for recovery

  • HOW TO DO THAT - MACYour backup disk

    must be bigger

than the disk you are backing up.

    e.g. 1TB > 500GB

  • HOW TO DO THAT - WINDOWS

Your backup disk must be bigger

than the disk you are backing up.

    e.g. 1TB > 500GB

  • TURN ON FILE HISTORYYour backup disk

    must be bigger

than the disk you are backing up.

    e.g. 1TB > 500GB

  • HOW OFTEN? Its up to you.

Any files that are not backed up are at risk of loss. What can you afford to risk?

    Look at your working practises.

If you save and its automatically on the cloud, thats a second copy.

Make the third when you go home.

  • CLEAR T H I N K I N G DONT STOP THERE

You MUST TEST your backup system before you need it

You do not want to find out that you accidentally backed up everything except the Desktop where your really important file for the meeting in 10 minutes used to be

  • CLEAR T H I N K I N G PRACTISE FILE RECOVERY

Create a dummy folder that doesnt matter

Put some copies of files in it that also dont matter

Run a backup cycle, disconnect the drive and put it away

Delete a file (from the dummy folder) on your computer.

    Recover it from your backup.

Do this until you are sure you could do it 10 minutes from the biggest presentation of your life

  • CLEAR T H I N K I N G BACKUPS AVOID TROUBLE

The entire aim of a backup is so that when (not if) disaster strikes, your business doesnt go down with it.
