Woodruff Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Candler School of Theology, Emory University. Professor Johnson’s research concerns the literary, moral, and religious dimen- sions of the New Testament, including the Jewish and Greco-Roman contexts of early Christianity (particularly moral discourse), Luke-Acts, the Pastoral Letters, and the Letter of James. A prolific author, Johnson has penned 27 books and more than 300 scholarly and popular articles, lectures, and reviews. His 1986 book The Writings of the New Testament: An Interpretation, now in its second edition, is widely used in seminaries and departments of religion throughout the world. His rebuttal of the Jesus Seminar in 1996 with The Real Jesus: The Misguided Quest for the Historical Jesus and the Truth of the Traditional Gospels sparked a national discussion and made the cover of Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News & World Report. A former Benedictine monk, Johnson is a highly sought-after lecturer, the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, a member of several editorial and advisory boards, and a senior fellow at Emory University’s Center for the Study of Law and Religion. Novel TheologyEcology of a Cracker Childhood, by Janisse RayJanisse Ray grew up ina junkyard along U.S.Highway 1, hiddenfrom Florida-bound

vacationers by the hedge at the edge of the road and by hulks of old cars and stacks of blown-out tires. Ecology of a Cracker Childhood tells how a childhood spent in rural isolation and steeped in religious fundamentalismgrew into a passion to save the almostvanished longleaf pine ecosystem thatonce covered the South. In language at once colloquial, elegiac, and inform-ative, Ray redeems two Souths.

Taught againby Martha McMillin (right) and featuringguest speakers, the class will explore current food issues andis based on the foundation of an agrarian reading of the Bible.

Using a theological lens, we will consider the gift, science, art, and business of cultivating the soil, growing crops andraising livestock. Guest speakers include farmersLaurie and Will Moore of Moore Farms and Friends, who
