ALL WELCOME
New Members Welcome!
Can I just say............. Freedom is a word much talked about in our world today. It can be too, sadly a concept to readily taken for granted. But amongst all this talk of things like civil liberties and human rights, things which we as Christians have long valued because of our faith, it might be important to pause and consider what we mean by ‘freedom.’ A man who can help us is Pope John Paul II who, as a philosopher, had much to tell us about this. Before he was Pope, Karol Wojtyła, with his fellow Poles, lived under two sorts of authoritarian regimes that denied freedom. It may be true that authoritarian forms of government at times prevent people from doing as they wish, but what is more worrying is their denial of true freedom, the freedom understood by Pope John Paul, Christian freedom. Then such governments are most dangerous. Our readings today are inviting us to consider why we need this true, Christian freedom, and how we might go about achieving it. We need freedom because we are nothing more, and nothing less, than human. To be human means to live making choices, to choose between one thing and another, between one form of behaviour and another. The little, everyday choices are guided by the fundamental choice, the choice which Ecclesiasticus in our first reading presents clearly through images: a choice between fire and water, life and death, obedience and disobedience of the commandments, grace and sin. In other words this is a choice between right and wrong. This ethical principle is not optional; it’s inscribed in the very laws of the human spirit and, therefore, can’t be ignored, without ignoring one´s very humanity. But what of this Law that Jesus is telling us about? Still more, what’s this Jesus telling us that we need to go beyond this law? which might well have seemed onerous enough to those living with it and who grew up in it, as Jesus did. Jesus proposes a higher standard in order to exercise freedom in greater perfection. He makes the commandments more specific than the Ten Moses brought down from Mount Sinai. So it can’t be enough for Christians simply not to steal, to kill or to commit adultery, for example. In avoiding doing what we oughtn’t, and doing what we ought, we have really to show in our actions and in our omissions the love of God in which we’re called to share. Similarly, Jesus points to truth and sincerity as better guarantees of honesty than oaths. The Christian who is truly free loves truth and goodness. This Christian freedom, which always seeks the best, is not the wisdom of the world. It comes from God, revealed to us through his Spirit. Where the Holy Spirit is, there is true liberty.

Pastoral Associate Update The Pastoral Area Music Day is being hosted at St Clare’s on
Saturday 29 February with the highly energetic Nick Baty: do try
and make it – All are Welcome! I will be getting the route for the
Lenten Stations of the Cross to you after half term (I’m having a
short break next week) so do take a look. The Pope’s recent
exhortation on the Amazon certainly provides the laity with a clear
instruction to get involved in spreading the Gospel and minister to
each other in new ways. Perhaps our coming together as the
People of God from our own parishes can encourage us to walk
alongside one another and share our journey of Faith. “Love is the
law of God. You live that you may learn to love. You love that you
may learn to live” quote from the writer Mikhail Naimy.
