“Rejoice and Be Glad”
This Sunday’s Gospel is Luke’s version of the Beatitudes, sterner than Matthew’s: Instead of “Blessed
are the poor in spirit,” we get “Blessed are the poor”; instead of “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst
for righteousness,” we get “Blessed are the hungry.” Yet the main message is the same, and the Beati-
tudes anchor the Church’s teaching on how to follow Jesus. (See the Catechism of the Catholic Church,
§1716ff.)
Last year Pope Francis published an apostolic exhortation Gaudete et Exsultate, “Rejoice and Be Glad,”
essentially a reflection on the Beatitudes, to call each and all of us to holiness in a practical way. He
wants each of us in his own way not to be flawless, but to become the saints God intends. For most of us,
that means patience with family, kindness to neighbors, working first for the common good rather than
our own interests. Your life is a mission, a way for God to speak his word of love to the world. For this,
you will need both prayerful devotion to God and committed service to others. Holiness will require sac-
rifice, but it leads to the vitality and joy of becoming the person God created you to be. Allow God to
transform you.
To be holy you must be oriented to God and others, not too wrapped up in yourself. You can’t be too con-
cerned with your own thoughts or feelings, still less whether these are perfectly refined. Nor should you
be too absorbed in your own accomplishments or willpower. We begin the walk of holiness by respond-
ing to the Lord’s initiative, and by continuing in humble dependence upon his favor and forgiveness.
Jesus’ first great sermon, the “Sermon on the Mount” (Matthew 5:1—7:28) begins with the Beatitudes, in
which Jesus outlines how we can grow in holiness. Elsewhere, Pope Francis has encouraged us to recite
the Beatitudes daily:
3Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4Blessed are those who mourn, for
they will be comforted. 5Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6Blessed are those who hun-
ger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive
mercy. 8Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall
be called children of God. 10Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is
the kingdom of heaven. 11Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of
evil against you falsely on my account. 12Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so
men persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Pope Francis also cites Matthew 25:31-46—“whatever you did for one of these little brothers and sisters,
you did for me”—as a guide to holiness. Here Christians can make two mistakes: (1) They can separate
their good works from a personal relationship with the Lord, neglecting prayer and grace and Gospel; or
(2) they sideline some social engagement, neglecting to see each person in immediate need as like Christ
himself.
Some of the signs by which we can navigate our path of holiness are (a) perseverance, patience, and
meekness, (b) joy and a sense of humor, (c) boldness and passion, (d) sharing life “in community,” (e)
living “in constant prayer.” It will be a constant battle with the Devil, who opposes us on this path and
whose goal is to make us stumble or turn away. Make a daily examination of conscience and ask God for
the gift of discernment in finding our way.

ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE Rejoice and Be Glad; Your Reward Will Be Great in Heaven – What is it that we live for? What are the motivations of our thoughts, our words, our actions, our entire lives? Is it some-thing in this life – accomplishment, knowledge, wealth, power, prestige? Or is it something else, like heaven and our eternal reward? As Chris-tians, there are countless references in Sacred Scripture and in the teachings from every genera-tion of the Church that remind us that we were not made for this world. For instance, in the First Book of Chronicles, King David prays, “For before you we are strangers and travelers, like all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without a future.” (1 Chr 29:15) That means that we are made for something more, the greatest thing, life for ever with God in heaven. However, it does not mean that we can just sit back and enjoy the ride here, as if heaven is a given. Rather, as Jesus reminds us in the Beatitudes in today’s Gos-pel, we must put ourselves and our wants aside and instead live for God and others. On Mission for The Church Alive! seeks to provide for the good of the Church so that, in building up the Kingdom of God here on earth, we can be welcomed home God’s Kingdom in heaven. ST. MALACY SPEAKER SERIES Please join us for our speaker series on February 19th at 7PM featuring Fr. Richard S. Jones who will be speaking on “How to have a more meaningful Lent.” Father Jones is a priest known for his humility, compassion and willingness to serve the faith community. He is a Pittsburgh educated native who has served in area parishes for 30 years. He is renowned as a speaker and he has written for the Pitts-burgh Catholic for the last 18 years. HIGH SCHOOL WOMEN’S RETREAT The Pittsburgh Religious Vocation Council will host a high school women’s retreat on Saturday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse in Baden. Presenter Merritt Donoghue, 24, will inspire students to embrace their relationship with God in high school and through their early twenties. Merritt is an event planner and dynamic speaker who traces her love of people, minis-try and communications back to her days at Our Lady of Sacred Heart High School. She serves on the Catholic Wom-en’s Fellowship Pittsburgh Conference Team and works as Community Engagement Manager for De Fer Coffee & Tea. Join Merritt and treat yourself to a day of conversation, worship and prayerful exploration on the Sisters’ sacred grounds with new and old friends. Outstanding Catholic School Student
Congratulations to 8th grader Marco Iacchetti who was
recognized as Holy Trinity School’s Outstanding
Catholic School Student for the Pittsburgh Catholic.
Marco is a student who deserves this award for his
positive attitude and kindness toward others. Marco
Iacchetti enters the school every day with a huge
smile on his face. His smile is contagious. Marco is a
young man who really cares about others. He has a
genuine heart of gold and is always willing to go out
of his way to include and help everyone. Marco is al-
ways a true friend and his positivity allows others to
recognize their strengths. A deep love for the Lord is evident in Marco’s
words and actions. He is respectful to his teachers and his classmates.
Marco volunteers at Heitz of Heaven and our parish Vacation Bible
School. Marco is a true follower of Christ and joy to have as a student at
HTS.
