Holy Songs Arranged For Guitar David Mann August 27, 2005 HOLY SONGS ARRANGED FOR GUITAR This book is especially dedicated to all those fellow guitarists, faced with the task of playing Holy Songs which are really arranged more for piano than guitar, and who struggle with the difficult chords as I have done since 1979. The book is also for any member who has a guitar to accompany Holy Songs at home. The purpose of this collection is to simplify the playing of Holy Songs on guitar by changing the difficult keys into more guitar-friendly ones and giving the capo position which will make it up to the original pitch. Although un-necessary and occasionally incorrect chords are not included, oversimplifying the necessary chord structure has hopefully been avoided. So, the Holy Songs should sound just as good as ever. You need to have, apart from a good (steel string) guitar, a capo, (keep an extra one handy just in case). Every effort has been made where possible to avoid tricky barre chords, so you won't have to play chords like F#minor (except in the alternative versions section) or Abmajor7 or the like. But, there is the occasional B minor, and more frequently F (major). Sorry, they could not be avoided. Chords you have to know: MAJORS: A, C, D, E, F,and G. MINORS: Am, Bm (occasionally), Dm, and Em. SEVENS: A7, B7, C7 (occasionally), D7, E7 and G7 OTHERS: D minor 7 (Dm7) (1st finger covering 1st and 2nd strings on first fret, 2nd finger covering 3rd string on 2nd fret). Dmajor 7 (Dmaj7)(1st finger 2nd fret covering strings 1,2 and 3). A suspended 7 (A7 sus) (2nd finger on string 4 fret 2. 3rd finger on string 2 fret 3). There are also a few alternative versions of certain songs. For example, the Principle Youth March is available with either C (easy version) or D chords. The D version requires you to play a couple of barre chords, but sounds better than the C version. In the alternative versions you might be required to play more challenging chords. Each chord or change of chord has been positioned above the word (or even syllable) where the change takes place in the song. If you follow these changes to the letter, you can be confident of providing an acceptable accompaniment. There might be one or two

HOLY SONGS ARRANGED FOR GUITAR This book is especially dedicated to all those fellow guitarists, faced with the task of playing Holy Songs which are really arranged more for piano than guitar, and who struggle with the difficult chords as I have done since 1979. places where you disagree with the change or position. If so, do what sounds right to you. Guitarists can interpret songs differently from each other. Which chord you choose to play could be a matter of taste. For example, in 'The Spring of Life', you could play: as in the book): D G C G We're marching to the blessed land of Canaan with delight... or, equally, you could go for something more colourful: D G Em G G7 C Am7 G We're marching to the blessed land of Canaan with delight... The chord patterns which are in the original Holy Song Book have been adhered to fairly consistently here. It should make it easier to play along with a pianist or keyboard player provided you use a capo in the correct position when one is required. Feel free to improvise, but do so from a foundation of knowing the basic chord structure. One thing which you might find a bit puzzling has to do with playing major or 7 chords. Sometimes D is put where it could be D7. (Or G when it could be G7, or A when it could be A7). Major and 7 chords sound slightly different from each other but in the Key of G, the chords D or D7 can be used to fulfil a similar function in which case you can use either. However, there are instances when a 7 chord sounds really appropriate in that place and much better than just a major chord. Please feel free to use this e-mail attachment as you like. Each Holy Song is on a separate sheet (of A4) which means downloading and printing out about 57 sheets. (2 of the songs required 2 sheets of A4 each and there are alternative versions to some songs). But, feel free to do whatever you wish. There is also included whatever information was available about each song from different UC sites on the internet, which is useful if you're announcing songs at a service. Some of these songs have interesting backgrounds which are not commonly known. I'd be grateful for any information you have since this 'book' will be revised from time to time. Duk Chin Kim, for example, provides the music for many of the Holy Songs. Does anybody know anything about him? Apart from the obvious fact that he was very musical. Another thing about chords: in a number of songs, the key of Eb is taken down to C (with capo on the 3rd fret) in order to avoid tricky chords like F# or F#m or even Bm. I am not too keen on the key of C, which I think lacks some kind of sound quality. I would therefore prefer to play in the Key of D with the capo on the 1st fret. For example, "The Principle Youth March" C chords are used, but for me D chords are much more satisying. (That may be more a matter of personal taste). If you want to change anything, you can use what I call the Magic Chord Line. A Bb B C C# D Eb E F F# G Ab (A Bb B C C# D Eb E..

Page 3: Holy Songs Arranged For Guitar - David Mann - August 27, 2005

So for the Principle Youth March song, you can change the chords up to the key of D yourself simply by going 2 to the right on the line above. So, C becomes D, F becomes G, G7 becomes A7. Am becomes Bm. Dm becomes Em, E becomes F#...etc... But, you must do it consistently for each chord. Where you see brackets, you can either play the suggested chord or leave it. Happy strumming!

Dear Gary,

I am writing to thank you for your site - www.tparents.org

I've been a UC (or should I say FFWPU) member since 78 (in Britain). Over the past few

months, I've dipped into your site a few times, but recently I have been drawn back more

and more and have been continiually impressed by the amount of information about the

Church and by the freedom that is afforded to people who wish to express some strong

view about the Church. I think that is healthy. A lot of members I come across, myself

included, are not very keen on the way certain things are going in the Church and want to

contribute positively in order to improve things.

My main feeling is that the Principle in itself is enough to really excite people and change

their lives in the way it did many of us. But, it seems that we don't really promote it very

much. I've always thought that we sound unnecessarily culty particularly in our public

prayers where many members over here say "Father...Father...Father" every few words. It

might sound just a minor thing, but I think that it sounds very culty and it's not even

accurate, because the Principle revelation says that God is more than our Father - He is

our Parent.

Over the past few weeks, I decided to do something positive (I'm a bit of a moaner

usually!) So, as one of the main guitar players for accompanying services over the years,

I have created a songbook of the Holy Songs For Guitar Accompaniment. I will enclose

an attachment with this e-mail. It may be that you know some guitar playing UC-ers who

could benefit from it. Though I say it myself, it has been a very worthwhile project and it

has made the playing of Holy Songs much easier for guitarists. It downloads and can be

printed out in about 60 pages of A4 - with an introduction, contents page, 40 Holy Songs

with guitar chords for each HS in manageable keys, including different versions of

certain songs.

It is finished, but I am going to revise it. I am particularly interested in finding out more

about the origin of Holy Songs. I recently found out that Song Of The Garden was an old

Irish hymn, and had 2 extra verses to the 3 verses that we sing. (Yet, in our HS book it

says (origin unknown). Also, does anyone know anything about Duk Chin Kim who

wrote the music for many of the Holy Songs? Apart from the fact that he is musical.

Page 60: Holy Songs Arranged For Guitar - David Mann - August 27, 2005

Anyway, that's enough for now. Thanks again for your wonderful site. I wish our British

one could be as open and informative.

Best Wishes,

David Mann
