Our Mission – Holy Family Catholic School provides a nurturing environment that fosters the growth of the whole child- intellectually, spiritually, socially and physically. Our school is Catholic: promoting the teachings of the Church and inclusive of diverse cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our students and faculty have all begun their summer plans now. We wanted to take an opportunity to review a few highlights of the year with you. We want to thank our parents and volunteers for supporting their children and helping us complete another successful year! I look forward to returning with you next year in our new governance model. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our Board President, James

Nastars. Mr. Nastars and his family have been a part of Holy Family since the

beginning and have supported the school and the community through many

efforts. Mr. Nastars has always been thankful for his Catholic education and

wanted the same for his children and for children of many generations to come.

His service to Holy Family is outstanding and includes being a founding Board

member and President of the Board for the past three years. Mr. Nastars is a true

champion of Catholic education and is often remembered as the guiding force

behind the writing of the school’s first strategic plan. We are extremely grateful

for Mr. Nastars and wish him and his family continued joy and success in their

new home and community. Mr. Nastars leaves behind quite a legacy, but we are confident that our new

Board President, John Miri, will continue to advance the mission of Holy Family through his dedication

and support.

Dr. Bookmyer is a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon practicing in Round Rock.

He completed his undergraduate studies at Texas A&M Universtiy, dental

school at the University of Texas Dental branch in San Antonio, followed by

medical school and surgical residency at the University of Florida.

Dr. Bookmyer is married to Kelsey Bookmyer, a pediatric dentist in Round

Rock. They have a son, Carson, who is in PK at Holy Family. They are

parishioners at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. In his free time Dr.

Bookmyer enjoys spending time with his family, fishing, and ranching.

We are honored to recognize Keith Winkeler as our recipient of the Catholic

Education Service Award. Mr. Winkeler has been active in the school community

since 1997, three years before Holy Family became a reality. He has graciously

volunteered in many different areas of our campus life including morning

supervision, reading to students and serving on the school board from 1997-

1999 and again from 2009-2012. Mr. Winkeler continues to provide leadership

and service to this community for which this honor is so appropriate. Mr.

Winkeler and his wife, Ekaterina, have two children at Holy Family. Dmitri is

in 7th grade and Kira is in 6th grade. Their oldest daughter, Lucia, is an alumni

of Holy Family and currently attends St. Dominic Savio as a Junior. Along with

his family, we honored Mr. Winkeler at the Diocesan Celebrating Catholic Schools event during Catholic

Schools Week in January.

Celebrating Our CommunityCatholic Service Award

Grandparent’s Day Grandparent’s Day is traditionally a time to share

our joy and faith with our grandparents and great-

grandparents. We are truly thankful for their support,

wisdom and unconditional love. We began the day

with a Mass celebrated by Fr. Ray Dowling honoring

all grandparents. After Mass they visited classrooms

and prepared kits for Mobile Loaves and Fishes and

made Christmas presents for local nursing home

residents. Many grandparents visited the Book

Fair and reception later that morning. We are very

thankful for their involvement in making the Book

Fair a success.

We thank everyone for their generous donations to Choir of Angels, we currently have gifts and pledges totaling $289,793.57!!!

We would like to thank each of you who donated to the Choir of Angels this year. Being the COA chairs for this wonderful and supportive community was an amazing experience, and we are so proud and excited to have seen firsthand the outpouring of generosity throughout the year. Thanks to you, Holy Family has reached our goal, and our school can keep the blessings coming for our children!

Student AchievementsExtreme Math

Extreme Math teaches students competitive math with the goal of entering several competitions. Our students accomplished this goal and achieved 6 first place trophies.

1st place for 3rd grade at the St. Theresa’s Catholic School Tournament

2nd place for 5th and 6th grades at the St. Theresa’s Catholic School Tournament

1st place for Elementary and Middle School at the Brentwood Christian Tournament

Top Bear Trophy for the top overall scoring student in each grade given to Nicholas Nguyen (5th), Jonathan Shoemaker (6th) and Matthew Bianchi (8th)

School Honor Roll at the AMC 8 International Competition by competing with 3000 other middle schools from around the world and finishing in the top 1%

2nd place overall at the San Antonio Tournament

Four students placed at the Mathnasium TriMathlon; 1st place for Jessica Shoemaker (3rd) and Jonathan Shoemaker (6th), 4th place for Nicholas Bianchi (6th) and 5th place for Nicholas Nguyen (5th). Jonathan’s perfect score earned him a spot in the National playoff where he placed 2nd.

Quiz BowlQuiz Bowl consists of teams of four students answering questions ranging from Science to Literature to Sports to History. Holy Family students have competed in many tournaments with the fastest on the buzzer earning them countless victories.

BEST Robotics Our middle school’s BEST robotics team competed against 23 other middle school and high school teams. They tied for 11th with two high schools in the head-to-head competition (building a robot from scratch to climb a 10 foot pole), 5th in the website design portion of the contest and 6th with the engineering notebook. For the overall BEST award they finished 6th!!

Celtic InvitationalStudents from Holy Family participated in the Celtic Invitational in the areas of Prose Interpretation, Group Improv, Poetry and Storytelling resulting in many top finishes.

History Bee Four of our students, Matthew Bianchi, Eleazar Camez, Nick Isakson and Daniel Jilek, advanced to the Regional Championship in San Antonio. They competed in a game show format with multiple rounds facing 5-6 other students in each round. As they scored points, they qualified for subsequent rounds. The top 7 students overall were invited to the National Championship. The Final Round was a showdown between Eleazar Camez and Daniel Jilek. Eleazar edged Daniel 5-3 to win the Regional Title. Nick and Matthew made the top seven and also qualified for Nationals which will be held in Atlanta in June. Last year’s National winner won $50,000!

Leadership and Service Award This year’s recipients for the Leadership and Service Award are Jose Miguel Guevara-Hernandez, Mary Cooke, Amanda Fuentes, Emily Shoemaker and Nathan Nguyen. They were nominated by their teachers based on their personal characteristics of leadership and service, as well as their Christian witness to others. They celebrated a special Mass with Bishop Vasquez during Catholic School’s Week.

Diocesan Science Fair Nine Catholic Schools participated in the 11th Annual Diocesan Science Fair held at St. Michael’s Catholic Academy. 113 students turned in 84 projects covering topics in Earth Science, Life Science, Physical Science and Team Projects. Our very own Kraig Riek won 1st place in the Earth Science category with his project: “Got Water: Improving Recharge Zones”.

Congratulations to our Holy Family 2012-2013 Basketball Teams! I would like to thank all 9 teams for the countless hours of their time, as well as the hours donated by our coaches and parents for a fun and exciting season.

Of our 9 teams, 8 made the first round of playoffs! In addition to that, we had 4 teams make it past the second round of playoffs. In the end we had 3 teams bring home the trophies. Both 7/8 Boys 1A and 5/6 Girls 5A won the consolation bracket. Hitting their stride in the last few games of the season, the 5/6 Boys 1A rolled into the playoffs and brought home the 3rd place AIPL trophy!

Social ConscienceLegacy of Giving

We continued our partnership with A Legacy of Giving, which empowers children through philanthropy education and youth philanthropy programs to become more engaged in improving their communities and world. In the fall, students dutifully collected food items and coats to fill up a POD for a Coat and Can Drive. Holy Family students collected 3,572 pounds of food which will serve 2,858 meals to families across Central Texas! As a youth community,

Legacy of Giving students donated more than 46,000 pounds of food to the Capital Area Food Bank, which translates to 36,800 meals! Holy Family students

collected 230 coats, and together, Legacy students donated more than 3,600 coats to kids in Central Texas.

In the spring, students turned their focus to Walk for the Water, a community service event that brings awareness and funds to build a clean water system for those in need. The Walk for the Water Campaign that was spearheaded by the Social Justice class in grades Pre-K – 4, and the Student Council in grades 5-8, yielded a total of $6,908.96 from the sacrifice, time, talent, treasure and advocacy of the students of Holy Family Catholic School. The Art Show at Savio brought in $4,625.00. This money was raised through the time of Mrs. Robbins and the time and talent of the students of Holy Family and St. Dominic Savio Catholic Schools. The total being sent to the Legacy of Giving/Gazelle Foundation is $11,533.96. This amount of money will build 1/3 of a water system in Burundi. The Water system is more than a well; it also purifies the water. We have collectively raised enough money to provide 575 children with potable, palatable water for the rest of their lives.

Texas Catholic Pro-Life Day

Students from Holy Family were happy to participate in the Texas Catholic Pro -Life Day. Elementary students from Holy Family teamed up with other children to act out the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary for the Living Rosary at San Jose Parish. Middle school students ushered and assisted at the Pro-Life Mass with Bishop Vasquez. A large group of students and families braved the drizzly weather to march with thousands of other Texans at the March for Life. As the afternoon progressed and the sun came out, students were happy to give a voice to the voiceless and spread the good news of the Gospel of Life.

The faculty, staff, students and families are enjoying our new Stations of the Cross. The 14 stations tell the journey of Christ in his final hours. Thank you to Alex Smith (Class of 2009) for his Eagle Scout Project for Holy Family.

Eucharistic Procession

In honor of Catholic Schools Week, our school and community celebrated the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Fr. Steve Sauser, from St. Elizabeth Parish in Pflugerville, was our presiding Priest for Mass and the Eucharistic Procession which traveled through the buildings.

Holy Family Statue

We have a new statue of the Holy Family, just outside our school offices. The statue has recently undergone restoration and was a generous gift from St. Thomas More Parish. We are delighted to have it and we know our community will enjoy it.

Choir Fest

The Holy Family Blue Angel Choir hosted the 11th annual choir festival in Novemeber for elementary and middle school choirs from around the Austin Diocese. This event is also part of the National Sacred Music Festival, “St. Cecilia Sing” sponsored by the National Association of Pastoral Musicians. The students made new friends as they enjoyed a day of fellowship, fun, prayer and rehearsal. The schools sang a few selections together as well and each school had an opportunity to showcase their choir during the concert.

Students, faculty, staff and parents celebrated All Saints Day together with a Mass that began with a procession of Saints. After Mass, our 6th grade Saints visited each classroom and shared information about their Saint.

Camp Kappe

The 5th graders spent four days in Plantersville, TX at the School of Environmental Science run by the Diocese of Galveston-Houston. Sister Thomas Ann oversees the camp with a staff of about eight others. Students attended classes covering topics such as potential and kinetic energy, meditation, gardening and agriculture. The staff did a wonderful job of keeping students engaged in their activities. The students, teachers and chaperones that attended learned quite a bit and created many memorable experiences.
