19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B

We continue our reflections on the Eucharist. We began with faith, and talked a little about the miracle of the manna and transubstantiation last week. In our Gospel Jesus doubles down on what He has been saying by being very specific. He says, “The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” This weekend we will reflect a little bit on the true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Many, including Catholics, believe that the Eucharist is symbol. They use John 6 to say that the bread Jesus meant for us to chew on is Scripture. But what did Jesus say? Did He say the bread He will give is a symbol for His flesh? Did He say the bread He will give is His word found in Scripture? He said none of these. What He does say is the bread He will give is His flesh. And He meant for physical chewing as well, not the spiritual chewing that can be implied by spiritually meditating on the Word of God. Jesus uses the very descriptive Greek word trogo which means “to gnaw” or “to chew.” We can only gnaw or chew with our teeth, so Jesus had physical eating and chewing in mind. And He also never makes any implication that this will spiritually be done either. So we can only rightly conclude, following the teaching of the Catholic Church, that the bread Jesus gives to the world is really, truly, and substantially contained in the Eucharist. The Eucharistic species is actually Body and Blood of Christ. This is a very profound thing to say and believe, but our faith knows it to be true. Part of my duty as pastor is to communicate the truths of the faith to all. Near the top of this list is communicating the reality of the Eucharist. I hope to communicate this by what I say, but also by my actions. I hope people can simply understand the importance of the Eucharist, even something simple by how I genuflect towards the tabernacle. All of the actions and postures in and outside of Mass can help us to truly understand and believe that it is really Jesus present in the Eucharist. There is a particular action that I do, which a lot of priests do not do, that I hope at least some of you have noticed, and may have wondered why I do it. I’m referring to the way I hold my fingers after the consecration, in that I keep my thumb and index fingers closed until I can purify them after distributing communion. If the host is the Body of Christ, then even the smallest particle that comes off is the Body of Christ as well, and should be treated with due reverence. Keeping my fingers like this helps to prevent these particles from falling on the floor. (For those keeping score at home it is not good for the Eucharist to be stepped on, even unknowingly.) The garment that is unfolded during Mass and placed on the altar, called the corporal, helps to catch these small particles as well. I observe this gesture to hopefully communicate to others of the reality of Jesus in the Eucharist. If it were a symbol, it wouldn’t be worth the trouble of having a special cloth to catch particles, nor would it be necessary to hold my fingers in such a silly way, which was the norm before Vatican II by the way. I hope to also communicate, by this gesture, just how transformative coming in contact with the Eucharist can be. Touching the Body of Christ changes us; it affects us to the very core of our being. We should ultimately be changed to become more like Him whom we are coming in contact with, and receiving into our very being through holy communion. If holding my fingers in a silly way can show this to others, then I am more than happy to do so. May the Body of Christ keep us all safe for eternal life. Reflection by Fr. Braud
