Mike’s Bio:

Mike Jackofsky specializes in hollow forms, most of which are natural edge pieces made from unique burls, but he also turns bowls, including thin natural edge open bowls, off-balance asymmetrical pieces, hollow forms with “wings,” and sculptural forms. Mike has been a presenter at the Utah Woodturning Symposium at BYU, the American Association of Woodturners (AAW) Symposium in Portland and the SWAT Symposium in Waco, Texas. In 2012, he was a “featured demonstrator” at the AAW Symposium in San Jose, CA. He has also participated a number of times in the Emma Lake Collaboration in Cana-da, and has had his work selected for the AAW exhibi-tions "Put a Lid On It" in 2003, "Spirit of the Southwest" in 2009, "Maple Medley" in 2010, and "Roots" in 2011. Mike’s work is on display in the permanent collections of the Sam Maloof Historical Residence Museum in Alta Lo-ma, CA, the Mingei International Museum in San Diego, CA, and he has donated a “signature piece” for the perma-nent collection of the AAW in Minneapolis. Mike received “Best of Show” at the AAW sponsored “California Con-tours” exhibition and he has won numerous awards at the San Diego “Design in Wood” exhibition, including more than 10 first place awards. Mike's work was voted “Best Organic Medium” at the 2000 “Art-A-Fair” exhibit in Laguna Beach, CA. He is a member of the AAW, San Diego Woodturn-ers, and The Furniture Society.

Mike conducts workshops and demonstrations at many woodworking clubs and trade shows, including his “signature” 5 day classes at Craft Supplies USA School of Woodturning in Provo, Utah. In 2008, he was the subject of a feature article in the Janu-ary issue of Woodturning magazine, and in April of 2012 he was the author of a feature article in the AAW Journal titled: “Working With Burl-Making Natural Edge Hollow Vessels”. In 2011 Mike released his first tutorial DVD, a two disc set ti-tled, Woodturning with Mike Jackofsky: Making a Hollow Vessel.

Membership News

In February we added 3 new members. Roberta Zorzynski joins us from Walnut Creek, Garry Seidlitz joins us from Con-cord and Jay Broadwell joins us from Lafayette. It seems like having the meeting place in Pleasant Hill has been drawing in people, especially from the classes Jim Rodgers sets for us all at Mt. Diablo Adult Ed.

We really need to get all the old members to renew their mem-berships for 2013. The stronger we are in numbers, the more money is available to get really good speakers for our meet-ings. If you have a friend who hasn't renewed yet, please re-mind them to join again!

The Bay Area Woodturners Association is a local chapter of the American Association of Woodturners. Our purpose is to provide a meeting place for local turners to share ideas and techniques and to educate the general public regarding the art of turning. The Association usually meets the second Saturday of each month. The Association periodically sponsors exhibitions and demonstrations by local and interna-tionally known turners.

President’s MessageMarch 2013

March 9th will be our first all-day (9:30 to 4:30) professional demonstration of the year. Mike Jackofsky will demonstrate his approach to hollow forms and natural edge bowls. His turning technique captures the color and textures of Mother Na-ture with beautiful symmetry and scale. Bring a lunch and enjoy the spring weather we are having in the bay area at a table outside.

There have been more changes in our insurance coverage for 2013 since our last meeting. AAW was successful in obtaining a Group Insurance policy for the na-tional Association. We elected to join the group as an insured party at a cost of $90/year. The policy is still being drafted, but the coverage is about the same as we had in the past.

Our focus on Safety this next month will be on securing your work and choosing a safe turning speed. There are several devices for attaching your work to the head-stock for turning. Choosing the correct drive comes with experience, but also some

common sense.Spur drives, face plates and chuck jaws all come in many forms and sizes to suit the demands of the wood your planning to turn. Consider your transition from one device to another carefully to insure the wood is always se-cure and is capable of holding the mass or weight of wood on the lathe. The club will be moving the date of our summer Bar-B-Que to August to accommodate the month long closure of the Woodshop at PHAE this year. I will be looking for a local park to reserve to have our annual event this year. Are you enjoying our new meeting location, is the club meeting your needs for exchanging information, access to supplies and finding new friends? Please let the Board of Directors know what you like and don’t like about our monthly meetings and how we can make them more relevant to you and interesting for everyone.

Respectfully,Bill Mellberg925-484-0316 (H) after [email protected]

Presenting Bonnie Glover and Cindy Navarro“Functional Items For Sale”

With more than 20 cumulative years of turning experience along with being sav-vy Craft Fair vendors, these two BAWA Members put on a professional display and demo at our February 9th meeting. The Demonstrator table looked like a dis-play at a Craft Fair with items that Bonnie and Cindy both showed and sold. A large crowd was in attendance to watch and experi-ence the talent and skills of these two fine turners.

With Bonnie and Cindy each taking about an hour to explain how they work, they both shared proven shop secrets that make efficient use of time when making a series of objects. They also disclosed many of their sources of various supplies. Many people were taking notes and asking detailed questions about many of the techniques and materials used in making their projects food safe.

Bonnie brought along her own computer and huge monitor that was used to show many of the items she sells. She demonstrated many of her unique turning secrets for making and installing handles with step-by-step photo’s taken at her shop.

Cindy used our shop lathe to demonstrate her proven turning techniques along with finishing her work to achieve saleable quality.

As a club we want to express our thanks to Bonnie and Cindy for a beautiful display of turned items and for a very informative demonstration.

Dublin Woodcraft - BAWA 3% Rebate for Member Purchases

Dublin Woodcraft provides a valuable service to our membership and the community, so please consider them for your next purchase or turning class!

Your purchases at Dublin Woodcraft also help the club! Did you know that BAWA gets a 3% rebate on all pur-chases made by BAWA members? For this to work we need you to bring your receipts (or a copy) to the next meeting. The rebate is only good for recent purchases - we can only turn in receipts if they are less than six weeks old! So be sure to bring in your current Wood craft receipts (or a copy) and place them in the Woodcraft Receipt Box on the membership table!
