STRATEGIC GOALS

• Foster meaningful engagement among staff, clients and families to co-create models of collaboration and shared decision-making.

• Create an environment where the spirit of inquiry is demonstrated everywhere, every day.

• Become a magnet hospital for clinical, education and research talent.

• Build a culture that empowers staff to engage in teaching, learning and research initiatives that advance the care of children with disabilities.

Every day, we are reminded that success can only be accomplished with the ongoing commitment, dedication and support of our people. As we look ahead, our work will focus on growing a strong, revitalized corporate culture founded on a spirit of inquiry, engagement, shared decision-making and learning. We will go the extra mile to provide an inspirational environment that challenges and rewards our people. By doing so, we will continue to attract and retain an outstanding team driven to achieve more for kids with disabilities and their families.

Inspire our people

MEET AMIR

The role of the family is central to a child’s care. As a family partner and leader, Amir advocates for including families as partners at every level of the hospital: from input at the bedside to participation on key decision-making bodies. The way Amir sees it, “Leadership is partnership.”

MEET MARYANNE A clinical nurse leader on Holland Bloorview’s complex continuing care unit, Maryanne serves clients with chronic illnesses or multi-system conditions. She also works closely with families to improve the experience of care transitions as kids get older. A tireless mentor, Maryanne trains students and staff to put families front and centre in decision-making and delivery of care. Maryanne says, “Inspiring our people means fostering meaningful engagement among staff, clients and families.”

MEET EVDOKIA

A child neurologist and the lead investigator in the Autism Research Centre at the Bloorview Research Institute, Evdokia’s research is helping to advance our understanding of differences in the brain in children with autism. Evdokia is also leading clinical trials to explore how medications affect the core symptoms of autism. Evdokia says, “Accelerating knowledge means transformational research in the area of brain science.”

Lead the systemWe know that our effect can extend far beyond the walls of our hospital. We are determined to use our leadership position to drive system change. Our success to date has been built on our collaborative spirit and ability to work successfully with organizations across the health care system. As we move forward, our challenge will be to focus our knowledge and skills where they will have the greatest impact for children and youth with disabilities and their families. We will lead our partners toward models of care that support timely access to services and facilitate seamless transitions to adulthood.

STRATEGIC GOALS

• Create new, innovative models of care in collaboration with system partners to support improved navigation and timely access to appropriate services for children with disabilities.

• Forge new linkages with partners in community, health and education sectors to facilitate seamless transitions to adulthood.

• Advocate for a provincial focus on equity in access and removal of barriers for children with disabilities and their families.

Transform care

STRATEGIC GOALS

• Generate, adopt and share new evidence for clinical care to achieve outstanding client and family outcomes.

• Provide exceptional client and family centred care, embracing authentic partnerships with families and ensuring the ‘voice of the client’ is heard.

• Harness emerging technologies and the latest processes to improve efficiency and enhance the quality of care to children with disabilities.

• Build a new Centre for Leadership in Acquired Brain Injury that will influence scientific advancements in teaching, research and patient care.

• Strengthen the Centre for Leadership in Child Development, building towards an international reputation focused on cerebral palsy and autism.

• Grow the Centre for Leadership in Participation & Inclusion and establish its leadership role in the development of new models of wellness, music and arts, and transitions to adulthood.

Our commitment to high quality, safe and effective care has always been an integral part of our organizational planning. We know that to exceed expectations and reach our fullest potential, our efforts must be transformational. Our plan begins with putting the client and family first and building authentic partnerships. We are committed to using best evidence to guide our care, including exploring new technologies and processes that improve efficiency and quality of care. Our enthusiasm for transforming care is captured in three distinctive centres for leadership: Acquired Brain Injury, Child Development, and Participation and Inclusion.

MEET WESLEY

12 year-old Wesley is a bright young man who loves to perform. He has cerebral palsy (CP), which affects his gross and fine motor skills. Shown here on the Pediatric Lokomat® Pro, a robotic-assisted treadmill, Wesley says, “Transforming care means exploring new technology.” Researchers at Holland Bloorview are exploring the potential for robotic therapy to revolutionize treatment for kids with CP.

Accelerate knowledgeMomentum in teaching, learning and research at Holland Bloorview has been building steadily over the last few years. As the Bloorview Research Institute continues to grow and develop, its potential to accelerate the pace of change and generate new knowledge in the field of childhood disability is unparalleled. With a strategic emphasis on teaching and learning, we have an ambitious agenda that will enhance our ability to train and develop the next generation of experts in childhood disability. Our dedication to knowledge generation and sharing will lead to innovative treatments, therapies and technologies for children with disabilities around the world.

STRATEGIC GOALS

• Conduct transformational research in pediatric rehabilitation, with a focus on areas of strategic clinical importance, such as brain science.

• Become a recognized leader in attracting and training the very best of the next generation of experts in childhood disability by embracing best practice models in teaching and learning and providing an exceptional student experience.

• Generate new linkages with academic, industry and system partners to accelerate knowledge generation, translation and evaluation, and commercialization of innovations.
