City Approves Stuart School

Riverview Crepe Myrtle Pruning Event
The Colonial Place Riverview Civic League invites you to join your neighbors November 23rd in
a collaborative effort with the Norfolk Master Gardeners and the City of Norfolk Forester in maintain-
ing our precious Crepe Myrtle trees. The Master Gardeners have surveyed the Riverview neighbor-
hood and identified over 60 trees in the city-managed verge that require pruning. This effort allows
the residents to participate, but more importantly to learn the proper method to keep these important
community assets healthy. All pruning materials and safety equipment will be provided by the city
and the Master Gardeners. All that is required of you is to come out and join your neighbors for a
little light labor (long pants and closed-toe shoes recommended).
We will meet at the parking lot behind McDonald Montessori on 42nd St and Columbus Ave at
9:00 am to form into teams and expect to be finished before noon.
Please RSVP to Mark Gallagher at [email protected] so that we can ensure we have the
right amount of equipment available.
Thank you for supporting your community!

ty? Are you social and outgoing? Do

Change Smoke Alarm Batteries
The Fire Department is reminding every-
one of the simple life-saving habit of changing
the batteries in your smoke and carbon mon-
oxide alarms when adjusting your clocks for
daylight saving time.
According to fire officials, every year there
are roughly 2,200 deaths and 11,000 ER inju-
ries due to the more than 350,000 house fires
throughout the nation. Proper installation, op-
eration, and maintenance of smoke alarms
reduce the risk of property damage, injuries,
and death. The risk of dying in a home fire is
cut in half in homes with working smoke
alarms.
Daylight savings time starts at 2 a.m. on
Sunday, November 3rd when clocks are set
back one hour. When adjusting your clocks,
take a few minutes to replace your smoke
alarm batteries and push the test button to en-
sure the alarms are working.

ANNUAL CHILI COOK-OFF
by Tobie Serafim
On November 16th the Social Events Committee will
be looking for the best chili recipes in the neighborhood!
Is your chili so yummy friends beg you to make it? Or, is
your chili so hot you need a fire extinguisher handy?
Have you got a vegetarian version of chili that could take a ribbon at the state fair? If you answered
yes to any of those questions, you need to enter the Chili Cook-Off and share your chili awesome-
ness with your neighbors. The Chili Cook-Off is November 16th from 6pm to 8pm at the home of
Sharon and Dave McDonald (619 Mayflower Rd).
If you attended last year’s cook-off, you know that the many varieties of chili were universally de-
licious and the opportunity to hang out with friends and neighbors was delightful. Plus, the folks in
attendance are needed to judge the chili recipes and pick their favorites in each of the 3 categories:
Keep it Simple Smarty (Traditional), Light You Up (Spicy Hot), and Peace, Love and Vegetarian.
Now, all you need to do is RSVP (space is limited): go to the Colonial Place Riverview Civic League
FaceBook page and click the cook-off announcement; OR go to the events page on NextDoor, find
the cook-off announcement and indicate you plan to attend; OR email the Social Events Committee
at [email protected]. If you plan to enter your chili in the competition, please send an email to the
above address and let us know which category you will be entering. Easy-peasy!
And don’t forget: we will be collecting unwrapped toys and gifts that night to donate to ForKids.
Hope to see you there!

Crime Prevention Committee News
By Laura Burns, Chairperson
The Neighborhood Watch revolves around the saying “If you see something, say something.” As we all
know, the Norfolk Police Department has limited resources. The police department depends on
residents to call in and report suspicious activities and to file a police report for any criminal activities.
This also includes reporting street lights that are not functioning correctly.
If you have security cameras, you can register those with the Virtual Neighborhood Watch. (https://www.norfolk.gov/FormCenter/
Police-6/Virtual-Neighborhood-Watch-Registration--419) This allows the police department to know where citizens’ cameras are
located so if there is an incident that may have been captured on your camera, they can follow up with you and hopefully get more
information.
If you have a Ring camera, you can download the free Neighbors by Ring app. You can monitor neighborhood activity, share crime
and safety related videos, and receive real time alerts from neighbors and local law enforcement. The Norfolk Police is also able to
send a video request to request footage from Ring owners who are in the area of an active investigation. You can learn more
information about how the app works from Ring. (https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360031595491-How-Law-
Enforcement-Uses-the-Neighbors-App)
Crime prevention is truly a community effort. If we work together and help empower the Norfolk Police Department, we can strive
towards having a safe neighborhood.
If you are involved in an incident, FILE A POLICE REPORT. If a police report is not filed, the police do not know about it and resources
will be allocated elsewhere.
You can file a police report ONLINE without having to wait for an officer to respond. Go to this website https://www.norfolk.gov/
index.aspx?NID=3089 for more information and to file a police report.
As always, report any suspicious crime or activity to the Norfolk Police. The nonemergency police number is 757-441-5610. If you
see a crime in progress, call 911!

Proposed Minutes of October 14, 2019 (unofficial)
The President opened the meeting at 6:34 pm.
President Langston introduced Delegate Jay Jones, who told us of some accomplishments during the past year –
Medicaid Expansion, the “Ashanti Alert” for missing adults, reform to the criminal justice system and more - and
answered questions from attendees on a variety of topics.
President Langston also introduced Peter Mack, with the City of Norfolk Stormwater Division, who spoke about the
City’s Stormwater system and the need to protect our waterways by preventing pollutants such as grass and pet waste
from flowing into storm drains during storms.
Crime Prevention Committee – will provide updates on recent crimes after an update from our Neighborhood
Officer, who is still recovering from an injury.
Social Events Committee – the 2nd Annual Chili Cookoff will be held November 16th; those wishing to enter or
attend may register on the Civic League’s Facebook page. Volunteers for the committee are needed.
Membership Committee – we have a total of 161 current members.
The previous month’s minutes were approved.
The Vice President reported that we are trying to bring the Mayor to our November meeting. The Master
Gardeners will also speak.
President Langston solicited ideas about providing a meeting or event to educate people about preventing hate
crimes. A number of questions were asked and answered.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
John W. Robertson
Secretary
