DEAR FRIENDS, The holiday season is upon us! The Center for the Performing Arts is bustling with activities. And we would like you to join us in creating unforgettable moments. Explore our calendar of events and make plans to attend a performance. The scope of music embraces the majestic sounds of Boston Brass to the world-renown Vienna Boys Choir to the incomparable Angela Brown on stage with Carmel Symphony Orchestra. The theatrical performances presented by Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre and Carmel Repertory Theatre pay homage to seasonal favorites. Magic is definitely in the air!

In this season of gratitude, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to each of you in supporting the Duke Energy winter clothing drive. Because of your generous donations many families will have warmth this winter. I’m touched by the outpouring. The many volunteers that assisted in gathering the collection made a true difference. The tireless crew from Fox 59 not only helped in getting the word out but also showed support by staffing the collection boxes on concert nights.

As you read this special edition of Applause! pay special attention to the photo spread on Page 11. University High School opened its doors for an exceptional opportunity, connecting students with a professional dance ensemble. Pilobolus dancers met students during an afternoon of movement exploration, unlocking the creative spirit. The dancers tapped into the students’ imagination. Another outstanding example of outreach and engagement extending beyond the performing arts campus!

Speaking of the arts campus, be sure to add a stop to the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Archive & Gallery. Located on the Fourth Floor of the Palladium, guests are always welcome to visit between 11 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. weekdays. The gallery is also open to concert-goers attending the Songbook series at the Palladium. Currently G.I. Jive: The Music and Entertainers of World War II is on display.

I look forward to seeing you at the Center for the Performing Arts!

Happy holidays,

AN ORCHESTRA OF VOICES This year has been filled with many firsts for the Center for the Performing Arts, and December brings just one more: the Center’s first holiday season.

By Margaret Sutherlin

With the holiday spirit in the air, there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate the season with the performances from national artists and the resident companies. Just one performance in particular is the nationally recognized men’s choral group Chanticleer. The Center caught up with Chanticleer’s assistant director Jace Wittig to chat about the upcoming concert.

Wittig, a 1999 graduate of Carmel High School and former member of CHS’s Ambassadors choral group, said Chanticleer’s 12 men choral group was especially unique from other a cappella ensembles because of their founding and heritage, and also because of the unique number of voices in the choir.

“I think an ‘orchestra of voices’ is such an apt description because we have such a unique organization and approach to music,” said Wittig. “We spend a lot of time with a lot of different kinds of music, and never spend time just pounding out the parts like a traditional choir but try to let the music be a self sufficient process. We sing Gregorian chants, music of the Renaissance, jazz, gospel and folk. We try to not sound necessarily like a traditional choir, but like an ensemble of voices, or orchestra.”

Founded in the late 1970s, the San-Francisco based choir has 12 male singers from baritone to counter-tenor, which allows the group the flexibility to perform songs for mixed and male choruses.

“We were founded when the big choirs performing big choral works were very popular. Chanticleer was formed to explore early music, from the medieval period and Renaissance, in a smaller chamber music setting, and have since expanded our repertoire a bit,” said Wittig.

The Christmas concert has become one of the most loved annual performances by the group. Wittig is selecting this year’s music and said the songs from 500 years ago seemed to capture the same spirit as the contemporary Christmas carols and the same Christmas and holiday spirit many feel today.

MAKE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON ONE YOU’LL NEVER FORGET!We’ve stuffed the holiday calendar with a festive lineup of seasonal favorites that the whole family is sure to enjoy.

SPONSOR PROFILE: THE BUCK GROUP AT MERRILL LYNCH

By Emily Lovison, Corporate Gift Officer

The Center would like to welcome The Buck Group at Merrill Lynch as the sponsor of Applause magazine. The Buck team’s mission is to be the single best source for financial counsel, wisdom, advice, and execution to the achievement of the client’s lifelong goals, treating each client’s assets as our own.

The Buck Group is led by Wealth and Management Advisor, Thomas J. Buck. Tom has been with Merrill Lynch since 1981. He was honored by Barron’s in 2009 and 2010 as the No.1 Financial Advisor in Indiana and as one of the Top 50 Financial Advisors in the country; he was the only Financial Advisor chosen from a major firm in the Indianapolis market to receive the latter recognition. Tom and his wife Catharine live in Carmel with their four daughters. “Having watched my daughters dance throughout their youth, I am particularly thrilled to help bring performances to life through the Buck Group’s partnership with the Center for the Performing Arts” said Tom Buck.

Consider a year end gift of stock.Year end is when many of us make charitable gifts to organizations we care about. These vital community investments can also have significant tax benefits as part of a larger wealth management strategy. Instead of a cash contribution, consider a gift of appreciated stock or securities as part of your year-end giving plan. Appreciated stock is a natural choice for year-end giving as it can offer significant tax benefits for the donor without impacting cash flow.

For example, Mr. and Mrs. Jones have held a company’s stock for ten years. The investment has performed well over the years. Instead of making a cash gift to The Center for the Performing Arts, Mr. and Mrs. Jones can make a gift of that stock, avoiding a tax on the realized gain—the difference between what you paid to purchase the stock and its current value. Mr. and Mrs. Jones also realize a sizable charitable deduction on their taxes—a deduction that can be used to offset other taxable events. Incorporating gifts of appreciated securities into your year-end giving plan can be a win-win for you and the organizations you support.

For more information, talk to your financial advisor or contact The Buck Group at 510 E. 96th Street, Suite 500Indianapolis, IN 46240 or call 317.848.2124.

PILOBOLUS WORKSHOPBy Carol Baker, Director of Education & Outreach

A pioneer in American contemporary dance, creating globally-acclaimed works of invention, intelligence, and emotional depth through a unique collaborative process, Pilobolus, in full force, travels to Carmel, Indiana, a day before their scheduled performance at the Center for the Performing Arts to work with area students. Choreographer and Master Teacher Renee Jaworski led the experience at University High School on September 30 joined by her six dance colleagues. When I phoned Renee weeks before the experience she explained to me that Pilobolus prefers to be described as a performing arts organization versus a dance company. Movement is simply their medium and exploring group creativity, physical expression and communication are their goals.

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21) is a national organization that promotes student readiness for a global economy, and arts education plays a significant role in this effort. Arts workshops like the one with Pilobolus contribute to student readiness through cultivating curiosity, imagination, creativity, and evaluation skills. Throughout the Pilobolus workshop, students and teachers alike were called to communicate in new ways, take risks and share what they noticed and experienced in each other’s movement exercises. P21 states further that “Students who possess these [21st century] skills are better able to tolerate ambiguity, explore new realms of possibility, express their own thoughts and feelings and understand the perspectives of others.”

The Center for the Performing Arts educational programming is grounded in the belief that arts education produces globally aware, collaborative, and responsible citizens. We are delighted to bring world class artists to Central Indiana and continue curating meaningful arts experiences for area youth.
