It is not the policy o f your hometown newspaper to comment on nutional happen ings un less they affect our every day lives. President Carte r’s speech last week w ill definitely affect our everyday activities.

The President asked the nation to conserve fuel to reduce U .S. dependence on foreign oil. W e should all do ou r part in cutting back our g a s consum ption to aid in th is national problem.

Follow ing the nationally televised Presidentialspeech, the newscasters attempted to explore the im pact on the people. A lm ost everyone felt the speech was very good, well written and expertly delivered.

H ow ever once again we go back to the belicvability of what the President said. He admitted that he has not been the best President thus far, but now he p lans to change that image.

It seem s to us that P re sident Carter should not have waited until the re- election period to say that he is go in g to change his ways If ne does change h is governm ental m anagem ent in the com ing months, what is go ing to happen if he is reelected and cannot run for a third te rm ? Does this mean he will change His ways only until he is re-electeci?

It is a known fact that the United States is sharing its oil with other countries who have a more serious shortage. Consequently, the President w as really a sk ing us to conserve oil so that the U.S. can meet its obligations around the world. W 'hy d id n ’t he say th is on televis ion ?

The Am erican people are good, honest folks who will rally around a serious problem" and get it solved - even if it m eans hardship. They have proven in the past that if they believe in something, they will do everything

ncccssary to get a problem straightened out. But. will the Am erican people create hardsh ips on them selves to share their gasoline with countries who would blow up the U .S. Em bassy and ' m urder U.S. foreign servicc personnel?

If we had a good answer to this problem, we would probably be sent to W ashington. D .C . as an advisor. Since we do not - we can only secondgu e ss the President’s f actions.

W hatever the situation, we should do our part to conserve fuel. ‘T lca se . M r President, tell u s the whole story so we can believe in the shortage and truly rally around the cause. l5o not be ' afraid to tell u s the whole story just becausc you want to be President for another term. You can’t play both

ends against the m iddle. The Am erican people can see through that.”---------------------------------------------------- \A M E R IC A N L E G IO N A U X I L IA R Y M E E T S

I w ish to congratulate the C u lve r Park Board for the appointm ent o f Dorothy T h e w s a s p a r k s u p e r in * te n d e n t. B e in g the S th sum m er in C u lve r and, a s m ost people know, being a loyal patron o f the park and beach; spend ing e ve ry nice cfay there w ith m y ch ild ren all these years. I h ave never seen the p a rk in su ch great cond ition!

I have noticed m any much needed changes both mujor and m ino r, but m a in ly the latter in the park. F o r in stance. since tne renovation of th£ pa rk a few y e a rs ago. I never rem em bered both the o u t s id e s h o w e r a n d th e drinking* fountain in w ork in g order at the sam e time, also, near the show e r is a bench on wtoich one Van put towels, c lo the s, * a n d o th e r paraphenelia so they d o n ’t get wet o r dirty. M rs. Thew s has added to m e “ a w om an’s touch” for the betterment of the park. She has waited isitil J u ly to start sw im lessons because the lake is m uch too cold a n y ea rlie r in the season for sm a ll ch ild ren to learn to sw im .

H a s anyone tried to get up on the raft before the ladder (found in a storage room ) w as put on it? U n le ss one lifted w eights e ve ryd ay or w as espec ia lly agile it was alm ost im possib le, the g ir ls seem to have the m ost

trouble!T h e f lo w e rs that w e re

planted in the U spaces near the beach fence na s rea lly enhanced the appearance of the pa rk A ll the benches and tables are be ing painted the sam e color. And , m ost o f all

the bathroom s are being kept reasonab ly clean I could go on and on with these changes I have noticed taking place

Not on ly h a s M rs. Thew s im proved the appearance of the park, but has com e up with m any c lever ideas for the ch ild ren; one being the sa n d s c u lp tu r e con te st! W h a t a n o v e l idea fo r sum m er beach fun. A s for e n j o y in g th e p a r k , t h is sum m er has been the m ost pleasant and enjoyable one in m v 5 seasons here.

I think the proof is in the pudding by the num ber of people that frequent the beach du ring the week days.I have com m ented to M rs. 'H iew s that past years the w ee k d a y s w e re n e v e r crowded un less the weather w as sweltering. One of the lifeguards that has worked at the beach for the last several y e a rs sa id the sam e thing. I th ink M rs. Thew s deserves a pat on the back and fu rther m o re I believe the town of C u lve r ha s found a v e ry good pa rk si^Jerm tendent; and, hopefully she will rem a in to m ake the park w e n better future years,
