l .0 INTRODUCTION

A total of 7 km of HLEM and total field geomagnetic surveying was completed between Nov. 15th and Nov. 19th, 1990 on 200m spaced lines. The objective of the survey was to define an untested HEM conductor (Dighem 1988, Aerodat 1985) which flanked a large magnetic body.

Initial prospecting and mapping failed to explain the anomaly. Subsequent to the HLEM survey defining the anomaly locations additional mapping and prospecting failed to adequately define the source of the conductor.

2.0 LOCATION AND ACCESS (Figure 1)

The property is located in the southwestern portion of the Hemlo greenstone belt approximately 20 km southeast of Marathon and 20 km southwest of Hemlo. Access to the property is via an Ontario Hydro service road. The road turnoff is approximately 20 km (via road) east of Marathon on Highway 17. The claim group is 7 km south of the turnoff.

3.0 PROPERTY DESCRIPTION (Figure 2)

The property consists of 14 claims which join the International Maple Leaf-Golden Trio joint venture which was terminated in November of 1990.

4.0 REGIONAL GEOLOGY

The area is underlain predominantly by metavolcanic and volcanic derived metasedimentary rocks of the Heron Bay greenstone belt which occupies the southwestern end of the Wawa subprovince of the Superior Province.

Structurally, the rocks of this belt strike east-west, have steep northerly dips and have a strongly developed FI, foliation parallel to bedding. East-west faults and lineaments indicate possible strike and/or dip-slip fault movements.

In the northern part of the map area tuffaceous and metasedimentary rocks are intruded by granodioritic rocks of the Heron Bay Pluton.

Muir (1982) has presented the regional geology in more detail in O.G.S. Report 218, "Geology of the Heron Bay Area, District of Thunder Bay".

5.0 PERSONNEL

The surveys were carried out by J. Maclsaac and T. Walmsley, all employees of Noranda Exploration Company, Limited.

6.0 INSTRUMENTATION

6.1 Magnetometer Survey

A Scintrex MP-3 proton precession magnetometer was utilized on the survey. Measurements of the earth's total geomagnetic field (accuracy of 0.1 nts) were taken at 12.5m stations. Diurnal corrections were made by integrating synchronized time variations of the earth's magnetic field from a base station magnetometer with the field magnetometer.

6.2 HLEM Survey

The HLEM survey employed a MaxMin II system manufactured by Apex parameterics. A coil separation of 100m was utilized. Two operation frequencies 444, 1777 Hz were used.

The system uses moving transmitter and receiver coils which maintain a fixed separation and horizontal coplanar orientation. The coils are connected by a reference cable and in-phase and out-of-phase components of the generated secondary field, measured at the receiver coil, are expressed as percentages of the primary transmitted field.

7.0 DISCUSSION OF RESULTS

7.1 Magnetometer Survey

The survey defined an area of active magnetic response ranging from 58600 to 69000 gammas with an average of 59850 gammas. Magnetic trends are ostensibly east- west conformable with geologic strike.

An annular area of high magnetic relief greater than 1000 gamma is defined in the east-central portion of the survey area. The character of the magnetic response is indicative of mafic intrusive or coarse flow.

Page 8: HLEM & TF MAG SUR · MAPLE LEAF EXTENSION NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO DIVISION RECEIVED JAN l 7 1991 MINING LANDS SECTION PROJECT NO. 2076 JOHN GINGERICH ... - Refer lo Section 77. the Mining

In the west-central portion of the survey area a linear zone of weak magnetic response (200-300 gammas) is defined. Central to the zone a discrete very high magnetic feature is resolved which is interpreted to map a small lense of banded magnetite.

An HLEM conductor strikes central to the magnetic zone indicating the magnetic response is probably related to disseminated pyrrhotite and magnetite associated with a mineralized chert (sediments) unit observed locally in outcrop.

7.2 HLEM Survey

The survey defined an intermediate strength subcropping conductor (1-6 mhos, depth w 30m) in the western portion of the survey area. The conductor (HI) has a defined strike of 400m and displays increased conductivity and width to the west. The strongest response occurs on the most westerly line 12E.

Conductor HI displays a weak, direct magnetic association and is located in a swamp within an area underlain by felsic to intermediate ash/lapilli tuffs and agglomerate. A mineralized (po, py 2-30Xo) outcrop of banded siltstone and chert is located near the conductor strike on line 14E. The conductor is thought to map more a massive sulphide lense.

Sampling in the area has not returned any significant gold or base metal values. Despite the negative results, continued surveying to the west to fully define the conductive limits is recommended. A line of gravity over the strongest portion of the conductor should also be considered if the conductor's strike is substantially increased.

Other weak, high frequency HLEM anomalies are also resolved by the survey. These appear to be related to surficial conductors.

8.0 CONCLUSIONS

1) An intermediate strength conductor (6 mhos, 20m width) with weak magnetic association was defined in the west central portion of the survey area. The limits of the conductor are not completely resolved with the strongest response occurring on the most westerly line.

2) The conductor is located with a swampy area and prospecting and mapping failed to adequately explain the anomaly.

3) Sampling in the area has returned negative results. An outcrop located local to the conductors strike suggests the conductor likely maps a sulphide py, po lense within an intercalated unit of banded siltstone and chert within a broad unit of

Page 9: HLEM & TF MAG SUR · MAPLE LEAF EXTENSION NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO DIVISION RECEIVED JAN l 7 1991 MINING LANDS SECTION PROJECT NO. 2076 JOHN GINGERICH ... - Refer lo Section 77. the Mining

felsic to intermediate ash/lapilli tuffs and agglomerate.

9.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

1) Despite negative results, the full extent of the conductor should be defined. The strongest portion of the conductor should be surveyed with gravity if the limits of the conductor are substantially increased.

2) Soil surveying over the conductive strike is recommended to assist evaluation of its base metal potential.
