ISSUE2011
Two of the three winners of the Young Social Entrepreneur Award
2011 are from HKSEC. They are Jack and Freddy, the respective
champions of HKSEC in 2008 and 2009. Each of them was awarded
a prize of $100,000 in recognition of his successful social venture.
Ever since their enrolment in the HKSEC, Jack who plans to operate a
food waste recycling business, and Freddy who is devoted to cross-
cultural education and the training of teachers for ethnic minorities,
have demonstrated energy and courage to change society, through
their projects for the contest, Green Collar and ICE.
Jack and Green CollarJack, the founder of Green Collar, graduated as
a Bachelor of Business Administration at
the Chinese University of Hong Kong in
2010. He could not stand the fact that
the amount of food waste in Hong Kong
with a population of 7 million exceeds
that of Taiwan which has a population
of 20 million. He also could not tolerate
the countless chemicals added to the
vegetables. He wished to change the
life of food waste, and through Green
Collar, he tried to transform food
wastes into organic fertilizers. He also has
a plan to develop his own quality organic salad
brand in the next three years. He wants to promote
a healthy diet of organic salad and to solve the problems
of low output and high cost facing the organic farm industry. Freddy and ICEFreddy, the founder of ICE, graduated from the Hong Kong
Polytechnic University, with a joint major in English and Business
in 2007. He subsequently took a short course in management
in Stanford USA on scholarship. Before running ICE, Freddy
worked in Google India as a management trainee. He has
travelled to many countries to train students . In Hong Kong, he
promotes cross-cultural and cross-racial English education,
to improve employment prospects of ethnic minorities.

Telly
中與 BM W Ar t Car 同 場 展出,AT B以 藝 術 設
ATB Auto Art
AT B Auto A r t

Four designers, whose consciences were
awoken by a course assignment, turned
their aesthetic and design sense and
innovation to change scrap car parts into
furniture, as well as a lucrative business
combining creativity, environmental
protection and home life.
The social venture, ATB, comprises of Alex,
currently an interior designer, Beatrice, an
early childhood teacher, Telly in creativity
education industry and Ah Kei who all
went to the same design school. None had
expected to become social entrepreneurs.
Telly, now running ATB on a full-time basis,
said their objective was only to solve a
social problem in Hong Kong through a
design. After some research, they found
that old car parts could be turned into
pieces of unique furniture. Theirs is a low-
cost and effective way to alleviate waste,
and it’s profitable too. They decided to start
with car parts which are rusty but not as
smelly as other wastes.
WORKING LIKE MAGICIANS CREATING TREASURE FROM WASTEBeatrice could still recall how helpless she
felt when she saw the large heap of vehicle
scarps at her first visit to the scrap yard.
She said, “As we decided to make furniture,
we preferred heavy materials and that was
why we thought car parts might be suitable.
When we had so many discarded parts in
front of us, we had to use our designer
sense to pick the right materials.” After
the careful selection of materials, Telly’s
home became the workplace for washing
and polishing them. The team combined the
parts and drew their designs at the home
factory, and finally came up with a unique
set of coffee table and chairs. That school
assignment was highly acclaimed, but very
few people noticed that it was made from
“useless” metals.
“The workers at the scrap yard told us they
had never imagined that the broken parts
could be turned into something like that
and they wished they could have a piece
of the beautiful furniture too.” Alex said
it was more than just an encouragement
or compliment. It implied a change in the
materials and people who encounter the
product. The status, life and value of the
discarded car parts were changed, and the
market demand and the attitude of designers
and consumers were also changed.
ATB X BMW CREATING ART FROM CAR SCRAPSMeanwhile, BMW was impressed with
and changed by the work of ATB. The
recycled and upgraded furniture made from
discarded BMW car parts were displayed
along with BMW Art Car at the Hong Kong
International Art Fair 2011. ATB has extended
the life of BMW car parts through artistic
designs.
THE POWER OF CHANGEATB is a social venture which seeks to
change design ideas, purchasing patterns,
products’ design, manufacturing methods
and consumer behavior. It changes the
shape and life of things, as well as the
mind and attitudes of people, such as the
designers, manufacturers and consumers.
They hope the power of design will in turn
change society and the environment.
ATB Auto ArtOld car parts create as much as 1.8 million
tonnes of metal waste Hong Kong every
year. ATB Auto Art recycles some of that
into beautiful and unique furniture. Through
proper upgrading and recycling, waste
can be reduced helping environmental
protection. Currently, ATB is selling a series
of distinctive table lamps, coffee tables
and chairs online. The small production
size is also one of the selling points and
the products are popular among fashion-
conscious consumers.
