Learning history In my opinion, the only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history. History is the theory of the past, unfolded and retold from time to time. To begin with, history is what happens to other people. Circumstances are never the same and we are doomed to repeat it. Learning and knowing is not enough as we have to act on that knowledge. Moreover, as Winston Churchill said, “History will be kind to me for I intend to write it”. Only winners write history. It is not an exact science; it is the product of imagination and fate. It is interpretable and subjective. On the other hand, history is part of universal culture, it is our way of remembering our ancestors, our past, and sometimes it is our window to the future. Even if history repeats itself, we only know that by learning what was in the past. This way, we can predict what is yet to come. To sum up, it is my belief that history is a beautifully told story. The more we learn it, the more we discover that there is nothing we actually learn.
