President’s Welcome2009 historic sandown

Welcome to the 18th Historic Sandown.

Welcome one and all to the ” Nationallube “ Return of the Thunder, 18th Historic Sandown 2009. I extend a very special welcome to the VHRR Club Patron, Sir Jack Brabham, his son Geoffrey, and Grandson Matthew, and thank them very much for making the tremendous effort to attend this meeting. I think that it will be the first time that three generations of the Brabham family have attended the same race meeting. Geoffrey and Matthew will take part in a speed comparison on both Saturday and Sunday in a BMW M3, and a Formula Ford respectively. The third car that will run in the speed comparison is a 700hp Ford GT40 Replica, to be driven by John Bowe. That should be something not to miss!

I would also like to take the opportunity to welcome Kevin Bartlett here as driver standards officer.

This year sees a record entry of over 400 cars represented in all catergories. We will see a special race for Historic Formula Ford, celebrating their 40th Anniversary, almost to the day when they first raced as a class at Sandown. 40th Anniversary celebrations will also happen for the Holden Dealer Team, lead 40 years ago by Harry Firth, and 40 years of the GT Falcon. We will also see as a guest category of the meeting, the Biante Touring Car Masters, competing in their final round for their championship this weekend. There should be some very exciting racing in this group by Sunday afternoon!

On behalf of VHRR I extend a welcome to all of the competitors, and particularly those that have come from interstate to support this meeting, it is fantastic to see so many of you make such an effort to come to Sandown.

I also want to extend special thanks to all of the volunteer officials that have supported this meeting, including those from VHRR, MG Car Club Vic, Vic Flag Marshalls, Vic Scrutineers, Fire and Rescue, & Medical response.

We are also delighted to have on board a new major sponsor in NATIONALLUBE. Please have a look at the Nationallube products in the trade area. Thank you also to our long time and very loyal sponsors, SHANNONS, COOLDRIVE & SPLITROCK and to all the other sponsors who have advertised with us in the program, or who

The Victorian Historic Racing Register sincerely thanks the sponsors & advertisers for their valuable support and commitment to the successful running of Historic Sandown. Without the support of these organisations the staging of this event would not be possible.

Finally, on behalf of the VHRR I would like to thank our Noel Robson and the Sandown Race Committee & The MG Car Club of Victoria for the long hours and effort they put in to organise this great event.

Enjoy your weekend. Ian TatePresident VHRR

The 40th birthday of some of the greatest nameplates in motoring and motorsport will be celebrated at this weekend’s Nationallube Historic Sandown.

Melbourne’s major annual historic race meeting will mark the 40th anniversary of the Holden Dealer Team, the Ford Falcon GT HO and the Alfa Romeo Owners Club, with special displays.

Meanwhile the 40th anniversary of Formula Ford racing in Australia will be celebrated on track with a capacity field of up to 60 cars dating from the 1970s.

The Australian Touring Car Championship series is also celebrating 40 years, with 1969 marking the first year that the title was decided on points from a series of races, rather than a single winner-takes-all contest.

Following endurance victories at Sandown and Bathurst with the new Monaro GTS 327 in 1968, the Holden Dealer Team was officially formed in 1969, with Harry Firth leaving the Ford team to manage the fledgling operation.

Ironically it was the new XW Falcon GT HO that spoiled Holden’s party at Sandown in the 1969 Datsun Three Hour endurance race

on September 14 that year, with Allan Moffat and John French pairing to head a crushing Falcon 1-2-3 victory.

However Firth’s HDT rebounded at Bathurst just two weeks later, with Colin Bond and Tony Roberts taking the inaugural endurance victory for the HDT in their Monaro GTS 350.

Over the next eight years the HDT under Firth’s direction achieved many notable race and rally victories and championship wins.

These included another Bathurst victory in 1972 with Peter Brock driving a Torana XU-1, two Sandown 250 wins, Australian Touring Car Championship titles in 1974 and 1975 (Brock and Colin Bond), four Australian Rally Championships and two Southern Cross Rally wins.

Around 10 original HDT race and rally cars – along with other makes that raced against them in their era – will be on display at Sandown, with notable cars leading various races on warm-up laps during the two day meeting. HDT luminaries including Harry Firth, Kevin Bartlett, Win Percy and Spencer Martin have also been invited to share in the celebrations.

The Datsun 240Z sports car made its public debut at the Tokyo Motor Show on October 18, 1969, commencing an unbroken line of ‘Z’ sports cars that has recently culminated in the launch of the latest 370Z and many of them will be present as part of a display by the Nissan Datsun Sports Owners Club.

The Alfa Romeo Owners Club was formed in Victoria in 1969 and today is one of the largest single Marque Clubs in Australia with over 4000 members nationally and divisions in most States and Territories.

Displays honouring both marques will be amongst hundreds of special vehicles on show on Sandown’s ‘Red Hill’, which has been re-opened as a prime spectator viewing area overlooking the spectacular Dandenong Road Corner. Around 220 vehicles are expected to form a mini ‘motor show’ on the Hill, including displays by members of the Ford Mustang, Holden Monaro, HSV/HDT, Renault, Jaguar and Triumph car clubs.

Other milestones being marked at this year’s Historic Sandown, which is being organised by the Victorian Historic Racing Register and supported by Shannons and CoolDrive, include the Mini and Elfin – both celebrating 50 years – while the Morgan sports car is 100 years old in 2009.

COMPARISONSPEED

Three generations of Brabhams on track at Nationallube Historic Sandown

Le Mans and Bathurst Geoff Brabham at the wheel of a current model V8-engined BMW M3 coupe will be pitted against his 15 year-old son Matthew in a current model Spectrum Formula Ford, while four-time Australian champion and fellow Bathurst winner John Bowe will drive a race-prepared GT40 replica.

And Geoff’s father and Matthew’s grandfather, three time Formula One World Champion and Victorian Historic Racing Register Patron Sir Jack Brabham, will drop the starter’s flag. It will be the first time that Geoff and Matthew Brabham have raced against each other on a circuit.

The speed Comparison on both the Saturday and Sunday of the weekend-long Historic Sandown race programme, will be a highlight of the meeting, which has attracted a high water entry of more than 400 historic racing, sports and touring cars spanning five decades.

The Speed Comparison will be a battle of youth versus experience. Matthew Brabham has been selected to join the CAMS Rising Star Program in 2010 following his meteoric rise through karts to Formula Ford. The young Queenslander began karting in 2001 and after several state championship victories and podiums at national level, he made the transition into Formula Ford this year with immediate success.

Driving an Australian built Spectrum Chassis for the Minda Motorsports/Kangan Batman Tafe team, Matthew made his category debut at Sandown on July 19 this year, finishing 15th. Then in only his second race in a Formula Ford on September 27, he qualified sixth and scored a incredible second place finish at Round 4 of the Victorian State Championship in challenging weather at Phillip Island – a circuit he had never previously seen.

Matthew’s goal for 2010 is to raise enough sponsorship to be able to contest the Australian National Formula Ford Championship. At Sandown he will be driving the same Spectrum FF he raced at Sandown and Phillip Island. But he won’t be alone. A huge entry of 49 other Formula Fords has been received for the meeting to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Formula Ford in Australia.

Pitted against him in the Speed Comparison will be two of Australia’s most decorated and experienced drivers. Geoff Brabham raced 10 times in the Indianapolis 500, finishing fourth in 1983 driving a Penske Cosworth. He also won the Can-Am Championship in 1981 and claimed four successive IMSA GTP titles for Nissan in the United States from 1988-1991, before taking victory in the 1993 Le Mans 24-Hour race for Peugeot. Back in Australia, he won his first V8 Supercar race on debut in the Sandown 500 in 1993 and joined his brother David to win the Bathurst 1000 in a BMW Super Tourer in 1997.

Brabham, who now works for BMW Group Australia as a driver trainer, will be at the wheel of a current model E92 M3 Coupe, powered by a 4.0-litre V8 engine producing 309kW.

Against the Brabhams and expected to start off scratch in the Speed Comparison will be John Bowe driving a Roaring Forties Mk1b GT40 replica fitted with a carbon fibre body and prepared for Group 2 Marque Sportscar racing with a high-output Ford 308-cid V8 engine.

Two years younger than Geoff Brabham at 55, Bowe is a four time Australian champion in four different categories. He was twice Australian Driving Champion in 1984 and 1985 in a Ralt RT4 during the Formula Pacific era; he was Australian Sports Car Champion in 1986 with the Veskanda-Chevrolet and was the Australian Touring Car Champion in 1995 when driving for Dick Johnson Racing. He has also won Bathurst twice – in 1989 and 1994 – both times as co-driver for long time friend Dick Johnson.

Overshadowing them all in age, experience and credentials will be Sir Jack Brabham, who will attend the meeting as the guest of the Victorian Historic Racing Register in his capacity as lifetime club Patron.

As well taking part in a parade lap of legends on the Sunday, the 83 year-old three-time World Driving Champion will also drop the flag on one of the Speed Comparisons amongst his son, grandson and John Bowe.

Formula Ford originated in the UK as a workable, low-cost class, ideally suited to driver development. It should come as no surprise then that names like Mansell, Senna, Fittipaldi, Hunt, Scheckter, Schumacher, Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve, Mika Hakkinen and our own Mark Webber all had their start in the formula.

The Brands Hatch circuit in the UK was the first stand-alone event which occurred in July 1967, with the Jim Russell racing school ” Motor Racing Stables” as the promoter. Australian driver and now CAMS representative, Tim Schenken was a leading competitor in those early days and took out the 1968 Guards Championship after winning over 24 races in the year driving the CBP Merlyn Mk11 prototype.

Unlike the UK, Australia did not have a great supply of suitable chassis for conversion to FF so strict cost controls were put in place such that only Australian built cars could compete. Consequently various constructors quickly took up the challenge. Names such as Elfin, Wren, Bowin, Beasy, Nota, Andrew, Lynx, Talisman ,Tudor, Birrana, Corsair, Aztec, Fielding, Garo, Adams, Hustler, Nedloh and Chipala all made cars and by the end of 1969 there were 15 registered marques in competition.

Formula Ford construction had really taken off and it did not change until 1976 when the rules were relaxed to allow imported cars into the competition. The first Formula Ford race held in Australia was in 1969 here at Sandown 40 years ago - almost to the day. Richard Knight driving an Elfin 600 was the winner of that inaugural event.

To commemorate the 40 year anniversary, a national 5-race meeting series has been held this year across the eastern states and this weekend’s Sandown meeting is the final event. So far 72 Formula Fords have made appearances at the various rounds of the series and the championship is hotly contested, with trophies available in each class and an outright classification.

Forty Years of Formula Ford

Formula Ford competitors will also be vying for the inaugural VHRR Stillwell Cup. This magnificent perpetual trophy is now awarded every year at the Sandown Historic meeting, based on points accrued in all 3 races over the weekend. The trophy itself was kindly donated by the Stillwell family and is an original Formula Ford Trophy from Sandown in 1969.

The MG car Club of Tasmania held its inaugural Historic Race meeting at Baskerville Raceway on September 18 - 20 2009. The meeting was a celebration of the clubs 50th anniversary and also incorporated the Early Holden Reunion 2009. The 22+ pre EH Holdens on show at the reunion created a great spectacle and as this track has a long history of full fields of FX and FJ Holdens in the past, many memories were relived by a large crowd of historic car enthusiasts.

The feedback from competitors, spectators and officials was overwhelmingly positive and those who were visiting Baskerville for the first time were ecstatic to see a track well suited to historic race cars and reminiscent of race circuits from a bygone era. The track itself is the oldest continuously operated race circuit in Australia and the challenging 2.01km of track produced close racing for all historic categories competing.

From the elevated vantage points spectators watched the meeting from the comfort of their own cars, having a full view of the meeting’s on and off track activities. Displays over the weekend included 270 cars competing in the ‘Shannons Show and Shine’ with a large selection of these cars participating in a lunchtime track display. Also included were various pit displays of period race cars.

Social activities outside the track were located at the Wrest Point Casino and by all accounts this venue was a good base for the mainland competitors and visitors.

The organisers are negotiating a date for around September/October 2010 on the historic calendar and if this inaugural meeting is anything to go by, it will be a must for many competitors.

The Gippsland Car Club was formed in 1964 by a group of Latrobe Valley motor sporting enthusiasts. The Club has conducted hillclimbs since that time, including many Victorian Hillclimb Championship events and five Australian Hillclimb Championships.

The Club started competition at the Gippsland Park Circuit in Latrobe Road, Morwell in 1964. The first track featured a sand/gravel surface, and was used until 1972 – the track used a section of Latrobe Road that had been left unused following a realignment of the road. From 1972 onwards, Gippsland Park featured an asphalt track, and this track underwent a number of changes over the period to April, 2008, when the track was finally closed to allow for expansion of the nearby Yallourn brown coal mine. The original asphalt track featured the infamous “hump” soon after the start, but this was removed in 1987, when Latrobe Road was again realigned. The addition of a crossover section and the joining of the start and finish straight allowed the track to be used in different directions. The track was resurfaced on one occasion during its lifetime, and was nearing the time when this needed to be carried out again when negotiations commenced to relocate the Gippsland Car Club.

The Club now operates from the new, state of the art facility at Bryant Park, which is located in the Haunted Hills at Yallourn. The new track, which opened in July 2008, is a circuit of 1.6 kilometres in length, features a track width of 6 metres, and also has a crossover to allow directional changes to track configurations. The circuit features a range of corners, and also a number of blind crests, no matter which configuration is used. The Club currently has a licence to use three different track configurations, and will shortly increase this number to a minimum of six when further safety barriers are completed. As with Gippsland Park, the track features both uphill and downhill sections, and is a true test of driving ability. The track at Bryant Park has proven to be extremely popular, with hillclimbs and other events taking place almost every weekend. The track is also available for private practice on the second and fourth Fridays monthly. Check the Gippsland Car Club website at www.gippslandcarclub.com.au for further details.

Gippsland Car Club is proud to be associated on an annual basis with the Victorian Historic Racing Register in the promotion of Historic Sandown.

Made in the UK, the Powerlite range of High Torque Starter Motors and Performance Dynamos

is a revolution in the supply of rotating electrics. All units have been designed as a direct, enhanced

replacement for the original part, or as a custom fit unit for a new engine design. They have been designed,

tested and installed in the application therefore ensuring that all units fit the application they are listed for. All Powerlite

products are produced in the UK, by auto electricians who have an extensive knowledge of British Classic Cars.

The basic concept of the PowerLite range is to substitute an out-dated, low output heavy unit, or one that cannot cope with

extra power required to start a modern engine, with one that is lighter, more powerful, more reliable and easier to fit.

Introducing theStarter Motors, Alternators &DynamoRange for Classic British CarsHigh Torque Starter Motors• Starts engine regardless of temperature or compression• Up to 50% more powerful - 50% lighter• Easier to fit

Performance “Dynalites”• Charges across all rev ranges.• Up to 50% more powerful - 50% lighter• Designed to look like the original Lucas Dynamo• Full range of British Classic Starter Motors, Alternators and Dynamos, including Lucas C40, C40L, “Dynalites”. C42 and C45 on request.

Exclusively from Powerlite – C45 Dynalite available on request with old core in positive earth! The PowerLite range fits neatly into Cooldrive’s current product portfolio, both complementing their extensive range of rotating electrics and sitting alongside the Vintage Air range of Performance Air Conditioning.

Natural ability, nerve and attuned reflexes are all essentials, but these things are common to most good drivers. Playing it by ear is fine-mostly. It’s knowing exactly what’s happening in there-the motor, the electrical system, transmission, every second-that counts. This feedback information can only come from professional instrumentation…. Instruments keep you in touch, get you full-time power and performance. You drive with computer precision. A Tach, for instance- gives you a split-second edge during gear change. The Engine Performance Gauge telegraphs engine problems. The Battery Condition Indicator helps side-step critical breakdowns. And Ammeters, Oil Pressure Gauges, Temperature Gauges, Vacuum Gauges-these and all the other matched-design instruments make a dash-good story….It’s like driving with a computer on your side, right?”When the above text appeared in 1972 as part of a Smiths Industries advertising campaign Howard Instruments was listed as a Smiths Sales and Service Agent. 35 Years later we are the only company from the original Australia wide list that still Sells and Services Smiths Instruments along with all of the other famous brands. We even have the original staff actively involved in Selling and Servicing!

The VHRR was established in 1976 to promote Historic Motor Racing in Victoria, and where possible assist with its growth throughout Australia. Race meetings and speed events are held though-out the year, giving owners of historic racing cars, and those interested in such vehicles, the opportunity to exercise their cars and feel the exhilaration of running such fine machinery, or just to be close by.

The club has been so successful over the years that meetings held at the Grand Prix Circuit at Phillip Island in February/March, and at Sandown Park in November, now attract some of the most awe-inspiring cars from Australia, New Zealand, and the rest of the world. We regularly see cars from the UK, USA, Germany, Hong Kong etc. Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, BRM, Maserati, Cooper, Jaguar, HMW, Maybach, MG, Lago Talbot, plus many Australian specials.

Many overseas owners and drivers find the warmth of the welcome at these meetings, the charisma of racing at these fabulous circuits, and the Australian hospitality, brings them back to this country year after year.

Added to the racing is the possibility to holiday in world class resorts around Australia,

either before or after the events. Another incentive for visiting the race at Phillip Island early in the year, is that the Australian Grand Prix (the first GP race of the season) is held a week or so later. What an opportunity! Come and see world class racing, Historic and modern at two of the best circuits in the world.

It is not necessary to own your own historic car. Many VHRR members join the club to be involved in the historic movement. To assist if they wish, or to merely enjoy the vicarious pleasures of historic racing.

The VHRR caters for cars meeting the requirements of the 5th Category in Australia, or invited cars.

At race meetings you might see open wheeled racing cars, flashy racing sports cars. Formula Ford, Formula Junior, Touring Cars from the 1920’s to the 1980’s. Some of the cars are driven by well-known racing identities still keeping their hand in. A world champion might even make an appearance!

So whether you race, or just want to watch, the VHRR has full race meetings, hill climbs or speed events to cater for you.
