Since its inception in 1994, the GEO Conference and Exhibition has grown to be the major geosciences event in the Middle East providing a healthy platform for knowl-edge sharing, exchange and dissemination as well as an excellent opportunity to interact with major upstream companies, service providers and academia. I have proud-ly attended every single GEO conference over the past 3 decades and witnessed its value addition to the scientific community and to myself. With the geoscientific data be-ing in the heart of any successful petroleum development, the event is similarly important for all professionals work-ing on optimizing oil and gas recoveries from reservoirs.

The theme of the conference, “Geosciences in the Digital World: 2020 and Beyond,” is particularly appro-priate for GEO 2020 in line with the fast-moving digital and AI developments in the world. The theme reflects the committees’ strongest belief that the advancement in the new cloud technologies, analytics, the ‘Internet of Things,’ artificial intelligence and machine learning will further empower geoscientists with advanced tools to further contribute to the world economies through optimizing production and maximizing reserves.

With a record number of received abstracts, the commit-tees have built a rich and varied technical program of over 350 presentations presented over 3 plenary sessions, 3 special sessions, 48 technical sessions and poster pres-entations across 3 days. GEO 2020 is further enriched with field trips, short courses and workshops along with a young professionals and students program. Furthermore, GEO 2020 will also host an international pavilion exhibit-

ing prospects from around the world alongside an exhibi-tion that will include international and national compa-nies, service companies and academia which will provide numerous opportunities for networking.

I am confident that GEO 2020 will once again be a memorable and valuable event.

The volatility in the oil market remains significant although light recovery has been observed. The supply-and-demand balance and oil price sentiments are still expected to gradually improve over the course of 2020. The dramatic economic swing in our industry over the past 5 to 6 years has meant that the approach to technol-ogy development has had to change. There is still a need to work on scientific and technological breakthroughs to the classical problems of exploration, drilling, develop-ment and production, but that is no longer sufficient. There is now greater emphasis on combining hardware, software, and subsurface knowledge into a seamless in-tegrated technology to transform routine and common tasks so as to reduce risk, uncertainty and variability and therefore cost. The major technological breakthroughs in recent time have been on developing new drilling assemblies for vertical, curved and horizontal wells to reduce drilling time, new fracturing methodologies for producing hydrocarbon from tight and unconven-tional reservoirs, new fracturing fluids and acid systems to drive better performance and reduce cost, and well placement optimization through looking around and looking ahead. These new technologies are aimed at improving efficiency, reducing delivery time, and in-creasing the profit margin of operating companies. The breakthroughs in technology will require agility, flex-ibility, customization and fit for purpose configuration as the technical challenges vary from basin to basin. The future breakthroughs in technology will need to address the productivity of ultra-tight, deep and high tempera-ture gas reservoirs. Perhaps most importantly, it requires an ongoing and significant ingestion of new skills in our industry and new collaborative partnerships to enable technology-system innovation.

The Arab peninsula is characterized by an arid climate with high temperatures and low rainfall. Hence, ground-water becomes a very important resource for the whole region. Most of groundwater is fossil groundwater that found its way to the aquifers a million years ago. That makes groundwater a critical limited resource that needs to be managed carefully to ensure development and pros-perity for the people of the Arab peninsula. The impor-tance of groundwater is further underlined by the major role it plays in current development projects for agricul-ture, industry and municipal needs. The existing water supplies in arid and semi-arid regions are not sufficient to meet urban, industrial, agricultural and environmental demands. This is mainly due to rising demand for water

resources; this is driven by global population growth. The current levels of groundwater recharge are not balanced and in almost every instance the current and intended us-age greatly exceeds current rates of recharge. This usage risks depleting groundwater levels and raising the salinity of the abstracted water. Water scarcity will almost certain-ly intensify over the coming decades. Effective ground-water management will require attention to certain well-established economic principles as a persistent overdraft will result in very negative consequences. Part of effective groundwater management is ensuring that robust and sustainable management plans are in place and imple-mented. These plans, formulated by hydrogeologists, require verification on a frequent basis, that is achieved by running groundwater models through a range of future climate and management frequency scenarios.

Workshop DescriptionHydrocarbon exploration is targeting increasingly chal-lenging geological settings and in many of these areas seismic imaging is difficult. Multiphysics (seismic and especially non-seismic data) can guide the geological in-terpretation and can enable us to reduce the uncertainty in subsurface evaluation in a cost-effective way.The key focus of the workshop will be on integrated in-terpretation, workflows and challenges. We will cover the principles for integrated interpretation of electromag-netic, gravity and magnetic data, rock properties (resis-tivities, densities and magnetic susceptibilities), geologic modeling and assessment of uncertainties. Constraints are required at different scales, depending on the ap-plication focus, from surface geology, tectonic regimes, seismic and the integration of associated petrophysical parameters. Finally, the business impact of the interpre-tation results will be discussed and how uncertainties can best be communicated between different disciplines.

Workshop ObjectivesThe goal of this workshop is to bring together technical ex-perts from industry, service provision and research institu-tions to discuss how the integration of multiphysics (seismic and especially non-seismic data) can guide the geological interpretation and can enable us to reduce the uncertainty in subsurface evaluation in a cost-effective way.

Who Should AttendThe workshop will span topics that will be of interest to experienced practitioners, both from industry and academia, as well as people without a background in non-seismic geophysics but with an interest in how the technology can be applied. Workshop participants will get a broad overview of how non-seismic geophysics is currently used in the industry. We invite participants to contribute their experiences (success stories and chal-lenges) in the form of case studies for discussion, includ-ing business objectives, feasibility assessment, work-flows, interpretation results and remaining uncertainties. There will be ample time for discussion.

Susanne Witte, ShellSusanne Witte is the Principal Technical Expert within Shell for Non-Seismic Geophysics (Gravity, Magnetics and Electro-Magnetic technologies). She advis-es Operating Units worldwide, Exploration teams and Research regarding the acquisi-

tion, processing, integrated interpretation and technical developments of non-seismic geophysical data and tech-nologies. She is also developing and delivering non-seis-mic geophysical training within Shell’s Open University curriculum and externally to Shell’s (future) partners.

Susanne has over 30 years of experience with Shell in technical and management positions globally. In the first half of her career, she worked as Geophysicist, Seismic Interpreter and Geophysical Advisor. From 2005 un-til 2012 she held the position of Manager Quantitative Reservoir Characterization, leading a team of 10 geo-physicists and managing projects focused on the quan-titative, integrated interpretation of seismic and non-seismic data. From 2012 until 2017, she further developed her passion for integration of geophysics and geology with the objective of selecting high value business op-portunities in the role of Team Leader of the Middle East and North Africa Exploration team, leading a team of 12 (senior) geologists.

Rader Abdul Fattah, TNORader Abdul Fattah works as Exploration Geologist at the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). His main expertise area is basin and petro-leum system modeling with focus on tem-perature and heat flow modeling on basin

scale. In the past years he worked on the application of GOCE satellite gravity data for oil and gas exploration purposes. He developed workflows to demonstrate the value of satellite gravity data for exploration in frontier areas. Besides his technical role in research projects, he has been involved in developing and setting up of inter-national research projects in the Middle East and North Africa region.

Friedrich Roth, EMGSFriedrich Roth is Global Geophysical Advisor at EMGS advising customers on the use of marine EM data for oil and gas exploration, available software and meth-ods for integrating these data into subsur-face imaging and integrated interpretation

workflows. In this role, he also leads customer initiatives aimed at developing an understanding of where and how EM data should be applied and building confidence in the data, e.g. post-mortem and global well calibration studies.

Friedrich has held various technical and managerial roles in EMGS since he joined the company in 2006. He started as Senior Physicist, developing 3D mod-eling tools and workflows for CSEM interpretation. He was appointed Research Manager in 2008 responsible for the company’s R&D program in processing, mod-eling and inversion methods. In 2011, he transferred to EMGS Americas in Houston as Exploration Advisor during a multi-year contract in Mexico representing the largest ever marine 3D CSEM acquisition program. Returning to Norway in 2012, he served as VP Imaging & Integration until 2019, managing the company’s imaging & interpretation services and associated sup-port and technology functions. His professional career started at Schlumberger as a researcher on borehole resistivity imaging. He is educated as a geophysicist and holds a MSc degree from the Colorado School of Mines, USA, and a PhD degree from the Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands.

Daniele Colombo, Saudi AramcoDr. Daniele Colombo is a Senior Geophysical Consultant at Saudi Aramco and Champion of Reservoir Multi-Physics Technology at EXPEC Advanced Research Center where he is working since January 2009. Previously he held various

positions in service companies such as Technical and R&D manager for seismic imaging in complex geol-ogy and Data Processing Manager for Schlumberger

in Milan and Calgary. He was at the forefront of the development of multi-physics imaging and joint inver-sion methods for integrated seismic-EM-gravity veloc-ity modeling applied to seismic depth imaging. This research activity gained several industry recognitions and awards which include the SEG Honorable Mention for Best Paper in The Leading Edge in 2016, Saudi Aramco CEO Excellence Award in 2018 for Disruptive Technology Creation and the 2020 AAPG Robert R. Berg Outstanding Research Award. He published more than 70 papers on a variety of subjects including micro seismic monitoring during reservoir stimulation, multi-physics joint inversion, depth imaging in complex ge-ology, near-surface velocity modeling and controlled-source electromagnetic applications for reservoir fluid monitoring. Dr. Colombo received a M.Sc. (1991) and a Ph.D. (1994) in geophysics from Milan University, fol-lowed by a post-doc position at the National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology in Rome. His research interests include seismic and electromagnetic imaging, and multi-physics joint inversion with application to exploration and reservoir monitoring.

Luca Masnaghetti, Schlumberger WesternGeco GeosolutionsLuca received his Master degree in Telecommunications Engineering from Politecnico di Milano. After a short ex-perience in the Italian defense indus-try, he joined Geosystem in 2006 as EM

Geophysicist. After the acquisition of Geosystem by Schlumberger, he held positions as Senior Geophysicist, Research and Development Manager, Geophysics Team Manager and Data Processing and Modeling Manager at the Integrated Electromagnetics Center of Excellence in Milan.

He is currently the Manager of the Center and in charge of multiphysics and seismic reservoir characterization for WesternGeco. The Center develops and applies novel workflows and techniques for the integration of seismic, potential field and electromagnetic data.

Course SummaryHydrocarbon reservoirs are constantly bringing new challenges to Geoscientists and Engineers for planning and proposing new wells to get maximum oil and gas output. Though our oil and gas industry is slow (particu-larly geosciences) in adopting AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology but recent publications and conferences on geosciences are dedicating to the research and applica-tions on AI.

This course focuses on the applications of AI and ML (Machine Learning) for different disciplines from geosciences. This course illustrates how geologists, petrophysicists and geophysicists are using AI and ML techniques in their workflows to reduce the uncertainty. The examples from both conventional and unconven-tional reservoirs include prediction of core data from well logs, automated well log editing, facies prediction from well logs, seismic attribute analysis using unsu-pervised learning, and sweet spot prediction for geo-steering. We will also show examples on how AI and ML techniques have been applied on geoscience (porosity, saturations, reservoir thickness, etc.) data and engineer-ing data (drilling and completions – e.g., cluster spacing, no. of fracture stages, etc.) for production optimization for unconventional shale reservoirs.

Malleswar Yenugu, IHS MarkitMalleswar Yenugu is currently working as an associate director in data analytics at IHS Markit in Houston, USA. He obtained his PhD in geophysics from University of Houston. He received BS (Physics) and MS (Geophysics) degrees from Andhra

University in India. He gained experience in seismic at-tribute analysis and reservoir characterization. He used integrated approaches from seismic, well log and cores for successful characterization of conventional and unconventional reservoirs. Dr. Yenugu also served as an AAPG visiting geoscientist where he visited and of-fered guest lectures at various universities like Stanford, Univ. of New Orleans, Univ. of Tulsa, Univ. of Houston in USA and IIT-Bombay in India and Univ. of Algeria and served as a short course instructor on unconvention-als and offered a webinar on applications of AI for SEG. He published and presented at various international journals and conferences. He serves as an associate editor for Interpretation journal and as a special editor for Geophysics journal. He was also awarded the SPIRIT scholarship (2011) from ConocoPhillips and the Global Geoscience Award (2012) from ExxonMobil. His research interests include petrophysics, rock physics, geome-chanics, reservoir characterization and implementing AI techniques. He is a member of SEG, AAPG, SPWLA, EAGE, and SPE.

Field Trip DescriptionThe Middle-Upper Jurassic outcrop (Callovian to Kimmeridgian) is the westernmost and landward strati-graphic record of the prolific Jurassic stratigraphy (Tuwaiq/Hadriya, Hanifa, Jubaila and Arab-D). These outcrops are well exposed and easily accessible along the Tuwaiq Escarpments forming spectacular west-facing continuous cuestas extending 1000 km north to south near Riyadh. The field trip reveals for the first-time depo-sitional models that subdivide the Middle-Upper Jurassic into genetically related sequences that are not always obvious from subsurface data. These observations provide better significant understanding of the Jurassic history and tectonostratigraphic events of the Arabian Platform.

The field trip demonstrates an integration of the previ-ous biostratigraphic data with detailed new sedimento-logical measured sections and subsurface gamma-ray logs, offering high-resolution sequence stratigraphic frameworks. This integration provides a comprehensive reference for the most economically important forma-tions in the Arabian Platform. This rock-based and direct assessment provides guidelines for reservoir modeling,

Field Visit DesciptionThe Awali field was the first field to be discovered in the Arabian Peninsula in 1932. Located 30 km south of Manama, the field continues to be a significant contribu-tor to the local economy. It is a geologically complex field, measuring approximately 15km long and 5km wide and includes sixteen stacked oil reservoirs and six gas reservoirs located within more than six thousand meters of stratigraphy.

The field visit will cover outcrops around the Jebel Al Dukhan area, the surface expression of the Awali anti-cline, where Eocene Dammam and Rus carbonates are exposed as a series of small Jebels and rimrock cliffs and are surrounded by younger Miocene and Quaternary deposits on the periphery.

The one-day visit will give participants an overview of the structural history of the island, facies architecture and evidences of geomorphological processes active on the field. It will also cover present day oil and gas infra-structure in the field and the BAPCO Oil museum.

Field StopsJebel Area• Series of small Jebels where main features of the Awali

anticline can be observed along with outcrops of theEocene Rus group.

• Mineralized fault: representing the main faulting trendof the Awali anticline central graben.

• Interior basin Rus group pavements.

Facilities Stops• Overview of the main infrastructure on the field.• Water Treatment Plant: receives liquid production from

surrounding manifolds for further separation where oiland water gets separated through series of separationmethods both physical and chemical assisted separa-tion. The separated high quality water is then injectedback to the reservoir.

• Gas Compression Station: established to compress as-sociated gas produced from WM up to adequate pres-sure for re-injection into the reservoirs.

• Steam Generation Station/Pilot where treated water ispumped to the steam generation facility to producesteam for steam injection.

Quarry Area• Rimrock forming the internal slope of Awali structure.• Cyclic deposition of the Eocene Dammam deposits

and recent sandier deposits can be observed.

Tree of Life• Site of cultural and archeological importance.

Dar Al Naft• Well No. 1 First discovery well in Arabian Peninsula

drilled in 1931.• Dar Al Naft: Small hall displaying historical items and

Field Trip DescriptionThe geological setting of the UAE provides an ideal back-drop to study and cover a wide range of both carbonate depositional environments, their tectono-stratigraphic settings, and their relationships.  The carbonates, which will be visited at outcrop, form the most prolific oil and gas producing reservoirs in the Middle East.  Over a rela-tively small geographical area the participants will have the opportunity to observe a variety of carbonates rocks depositional settings and tectono-diagenetic modifica-tions.

Travelling to the northern, UAE part of the Oman Mountains the carbonate field trip will be held over 2 days around Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), northern Emirates, concentrating on Mesozoic carbonates of the Lower Cretaceous Thamama and Shuaiba Formations.  These Thamama reservoir equivalents were deposited in an epeiric carbonate platform setting spanning over 1000 km across the Middle East. The younger, shallow-water carbonates of the Shuaiba Fomation formed over a simi-lar extent in the region, developed around an intra-shel-fal basin (Bab Basin). During sea level fall progradation of shallow-water carbonates into the basin occurred.  Structures that influence and modify reservoir properties and characteristics, possibly affecting local sedimenta-tion and diagenesis, can also be understood at the same outcrops.

Reservoir quality, reservoir heterogeneity, sequence stra-tigraphy, diagenetic factors, depositional models, play concepts and tectonic effects on reservoir characteristics will be discussed. Overall, these themes will provide a framework for understanding hydrocarbon field devel-opment schemes, since these carbonates are of tremen-dous economic importance –being the reservoirs for some of the world’s largest fields.

Objectives• Three-dimensional interaction of sedimentary geobod-

ies and structures – outcrop analogue application up toa km scale.

• Direct comparisons with the stratigraphy, facies andgeobodies of the Thamama Group reservoirs (primarilyKharaib & Shuaiba Fm’s).

• A transect through the top Lekhwair to base Nahr Umrequivalent units in three wadi outcrops.

• Sequence stratigraphic phenomena: correlating keysurfaces between wadi outcrops on a 1-5km scale.

• Determining geological feature continuity from anintra-cell to inter-well scale, as appropriate for geologi-cal modelling.

• Understanding spatial distribution of diagenetic modifi-cations, especially dolomitisation of specific units.

• Structural geological significance of sub-seismic toseismic scale faults that offset thin reservoir units.

• Tectonic progression through weakly faulted platformcarbonates to highly deformed deeper basinal Jurassic.

• Juxtaposition of the Jurassic thrusted over theCretaceous - Ras Al Khaimah mountain front mainthrust: characterize the damage zone.

Field Trip DescriptionThe 3 day field trip will take place in the Qarn Mahatta Humaid area in central Oman , Haushi-Huqf High in the eastern continental margin of Arabia. The field trip will visit the outcrops of the Cambrian to Ordovician Haima Supergroup (i.e. Miqrat, Barik, Al Bashair forma-tions) that hosts the majority of the Sultanate of Oman’s gas and condensate tight resources at great depth in the sub-surface. The outcrops demonstrate wide range of depositional environments, including alluvial and playa/lacustrine to sabkha, shallow marine, and braid-delta.

During the trip, different aspects will be addressed and dis-cussed, including reservoir architecture and heterogeneity, reservoir connectivity and fracability, and reservoir pre-dictability by using different subsurface data. In addition, the implications for field development planning and pro-duction performance will be addressed. The participants will also be able to see the Permian-aged fossilised trees of the Gharif Formation (Unayzah B and C equivalent).

Objectives• Understand wide range of different depositional

environments, mainly alluvial and playa/lacustrine to sabkha, shallow marine, and braid-delta through the well preserved outcrops of Miqrat, Al Bashair, and Barik formations.

• To address outcrop sedimentology, architecture and heterogeneity and some of the challenges of develop-ing these reservoirs in the subsurface.

• Understand the outcrop geology with particular refer-ence to cyclicity, reservoir variability, connectivity, and fracability.

• To learn different ways to improve reservoir predictabil-ity by using different subsurface data (wells, seismic).

• Assess the implications for field development planning and production performance.

Display DescriptionCore displays provide unique opportunities to students, geoscientists, academicians, industry and young profes-sionals alike to learn, understand, exchange ideas, and constructively interact. This is not only beneficial for personal edification but also adds to corporate under-standing and knowledge.

The objective of this core display is to gain an improved understanding of the different source rocks sequences found on the Arabian plate, which contain some of the most prolific hydrocarbon reservoirs of the world. As such, cores will provide a unique overview of litho/bio-facies, organic matter, lateral and vertical heterogeneities in a se-quence stratigraphic context. This broad display will allow a better understanding on source rock deposition and the origin of charge for the different reservoirs in the region.

Core displays will be accompanied by thin section/SEM Pictures and Petrophysical data. The display will include integrated poster displays to provide an overview about the displayed source rock sequences.

The following major source rock sequences are targeted:• PreCambrian Carbonates & Clastics (e.g., the Buah,

Shurham, Ara, Athel from Oman)• Silurian Clastic Shales (e.g., Qalibah/Qusaibah Fm from

KSA)• Late Jurassic Carbonates (e.g., Tuwaiq Mountain,

Volker C. Vahrenkamp, KAUSTProf. Volker C. Vahrenkamp is a Professor of Earth Science & Engineering in King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). He is a specialist in carbonate geology, geochemistry and 3D reservoir modelling. He worked 30 years

for Shell and has more than 19 years’ experience working with different reservoirs in the region. He holds a MSc in Engineering Geology from the University of Michigan and a PhD in marine geology from the University of Miami.

Israa Abu-Mahfouz, KAUSTDr. Israa Abu-Mahfouz is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Ali I. Al-Naimi Petroleum Engineering Research Centre (ANPERC) in King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). She is a specialist in naturally fractured reservoirs, unconven-

tional hydrocarbon reservoirs, geomechanics, geo-chemistry and reservoir modeling. She worked 5 years for Shell and has 10 years’ experience in industry and academia. She holds a BSc and MSc in Geology from the Hashemite University, Jordan and a PhD in Petroleum/Structural Geology from the University of Oxford, UK.

Thomas Finkbeiner, KAUSTDr. Thomas Finkbeiner is a Senior Research Scientist in King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). He is a specialist in geomechan-ics, drilling, well completion, natural frac-ture systems, and reservoir modeling. He

has more than 20 years’ experience in in industry and academia. He holds a M.S. Exploration and Development from Stanford University, California and a PhD in Geophysics from Stanford University, California.

Speakers’ Bios

Salvatore Di Simone, Saudi AramcoSalvatore Di Simone is a Carbonate Sedimentologist/Stratigrapher in the Geological Operations Department/Geological Solutions Division of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He joined Saudi Aramco in September 2013 after

having spent six years as Reservoir Geologist in Badley, Ashton and Associates Ltd., UK. Through the years in the industry, Salvatore has had the chance to describe and interpret countless carbonate cores from around the world and from across the whole stratigraphic column, with a particular focus on Middle Eastern successions.

Aside from his main sedimentological and stratigraphic work, Salvatore also teaches several courses and leads several geological field trips for students, young profes-sionals and experienced professionals alike. Salvatore holds a Master’s Degree (2003) and a PhD. Ahmed Fateh, Tatweer PetroleumAhmed works as an exploration geologist with Tatweer Petroleum where his respon-sibilities include resource assessment and play evaluations along with planning and execution of exploration drilling, testing and data acquisition projects in Bahrain.

He has been working on the Jurassic unconventionals,

Devonian tight gas and conventional offshore oil and gas exploration. He graduated from the University of Durham with a bachelors (hon.) in geology.

Workshop DescriptionThis interactive core workshop reconstructs and explains the depositional history of the subsurface formations that sparked the economic production of hydrocarbons in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. As a continuation of the Students and Young Professionals Discovery Thinking Session, participants in this one-hour workshop will be exposed to carbonate cores of the Cretaceous Mauddud Reservoir and the Jurassic Arab Reservoir, the first oil-bearing discoveries in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, respectively. The technical focus is a sedimentological overview, which further expands on deducing ancient depositional environments, lateral facies variations, and touches on correlating core to petrophysical and geo-physical data. This workshop creates a dynamic platform of interactions and activities to enrich the technical discussion.

Salvatore Di Simone, Saudi AramcoSalvatore Di Simone is a Carbonate Sedimentologist/Stratigrapher in the Geological Operations Department/Geological Solutions Division of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He joined Saudi Aramco in September 2013 after

having spent six years as Reservoir Geologist in Badley, Ashton and Associates Ltd., UK. Through the years in the industry, Salvatore has had the chance to describe and interpret countless carbonate cores from around the world and from across the whole stratigraphic column, with a particular focus on Middle Eastern successions.Aside from his main sedimentological and stratigraphic work, Salvatore also teaches several courses and leads

Maryam Al Qassab, Tatweer PetroleumExperienced petroleum geologist at Tatweer Petroleum, Bahrain. I specialise in carbonates of the Ahmadi Formation. Despite my everyday job as a develop-ment geologist, I am greatly interested in determining environmental settings

of rocks and outcrops, evaluating cores, and assessing porosity, permeability, and fracture trends. My educa-tional background includes graduating with a BSc (hons) in Geology from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom and field experience in various regions in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Southeast Spain

Field Visit DesciptionThe Awali field was the first field to be discovered in the Arabian Peninsula in 1932. Located 30 km south of Manama, the field continues to be a significant contribu-tor to the local economy. It is a geologically complex field, measuring approximately 15km long and 5km wide and includes sixteen stacked oil reservoirs and six gas reservoirs located within more than six thousand meters of stratigraphy.

The field visit will cover outcrops around the Jebel Al Dukhan area, the surface expression of the Awali anti-cline, where Eocene Dammam and Rus carbonates are exposed as a series of small Jebels and rimrock cliffs and are surrounded by younger Miocene and Quaternary deposits on the periphery.

The one-day visit will give participants an overview of the structural history of the island, facies architecture and evidences of geomorphological processes active on the field. It will also cover present day oil and gas infra-structure in the field and the BAPCO Oil museum.

Field StopsJebel Area• Series of small Jebels where main features of the Awali

anticline can be observed along with outcrops of the Eocene Rus group.

• Mineralized fault: representing the main faulting trend of the Awali anticline central graben.

• Interior basin Rus group pavements.

Facilities Stops• Overview of the main infrastructure on the field.• Water Treatment Plant: receives liquid production from

surrounding manifolds for further separation where oil and water gets separated through series of separation methods both physical and chemical assisted separa-tion. The separated high quality water is then injected back to the reservoir.

• Gas Compression Station: established to compress as-sociated gas produced from WM up to adequate pres-sure for re-injection into the reservoirs.

• Steam Generation Station/Pilot where treated water is pumped to the steam generation facility to produce steam for steam injection.

Quarry Area• Rimrock forming the internal slope of Awali structure.• Cyclic deposition of the Eocene Dammam deposits

and recent sandier deposits can be observed.

Tree of Life• Site of cultural and archeological importance.

Dar Al Naft• Well No. 1 First discovery well in Arabian Peninsula

drilled in 1931.• Dar Al Naft: Small hall displaying historical items and

archive photographs related to the history of the petro-leum industry in Bahrain.

Physical Excursion and Weather ConditionsThe amount of physical excursion is low to moderate. Certain outcrops would require walking around and gentle climbs. Walking shoes, hats and weather appropriate clothing are recommended. Weather during March can be expected to be sunny with pleasant to warm temperatures.
