Hindi 2Introduction
Hindi is one of the 23 official languages of India and is the country's most commonly spoken language. It is spoken by almost 400 million people in India, a little more than 40% of the population.
Unlike English, which is a subject-verb-object language (SVO), Hindi is a subject-object-verb language (SOV). For example, the English sentence, “I ate a banana” is “I a banana ate” in Hindi. You will need to remain aware of this word order in Hindi to understand native speakers of Hindi with relative ease and success.
While Standard Hindi is taught in the classroom, most Hindi speakers speak Hindustani, a smattering of Hindi and Urdu, on a daily basis. Actors in Bollywood movies and television series speak Hindustani and the same goes for popular songs in India. In fact, it is highly likely that you will hear these songs in the marketplace throughout the country.
Internet use is growing exponentially in India, and most educated Indians have access to American social media sites. They are familiar with American idiomatic expressions and use them frequently while speaking in Hindi. Expect to hear words and expressions such as “buddy,” “What’s up?” “cool,”
2
Hindi 2
etc. Hindi speakers employ “code switching” intermittently, as they switch from Hindi to English and back again to Hindi.
In Hindi, saying one will do something is often only a politeness and is so understood. When a native Hindi speaker says that s/he would like to have lunch with you at some point, she is often only trying to be polite. It does not necessarily mean that s/he is interested in having lunch with you. The reason for this is that Hindi is a "high context" language. The meaning is in the situation and the persons involved more than in the words. English, in contrast, is a low context language where the meaning is primarily in the words.
Hindi speakers usually do not say “please” when making a request. They also do not say “thank you” when a friend does them a favor or when they are served by a waiter in a restaurant. To a large extent, India is a collective society, and most Indians do not feel the need or urge to thank a friend for borrowing a pen. Nor do they thank someone for simply doing his job. For this reason, Hindi speakers may think that the American use of “Good morning,” “How are you?” “Please,” and “Thank you” is excessive and unnecessary. When an American overuses these phrases in India, Hindi speakers think that the

American is insincere and does not really mean what s/he says.
Reading
Hindi is written using the Devanagari alphabet. If you have completed the Readings in Hindi 1, you will already know the alphabet. If you do not, you should go back and (re)acquaint yourself with this different system of symbols. A listing of the Devanagari alpha-bet follows. This is for your reference only; you will not need the list to read the Hindi, since the instruc-tion is on the audio.
