Also, because of the lack of musicians in a given section, a bigger orchestra sound had to be mimicked by overdubbing the strings and background vocals up to five times their number, in order to achieve the desired balance, ratio and total orchestral sound. During the duration of the recordings, there were numerous "punch-ins" and "punch-outs" in places, where the player(s) had to stop and pick a new instrument or put a mute on. It all had to be done economically and yet sounding bigger than what it is!
