Notes: Performance is in Internal Throughput Rate (ITR) ratio based on measurements and projections using standard IBM benchmarks in a controlled environment. The actual throughput that any user will experience will vary depending upon considerations such as the amount of multiprogramming in the user's job stream, the I/O configuration, the storage configuration, and the workload processed. Therefore, no assurance can be given that an individual user will achieve throughput improvements equivalent to the performance ratios stated here. IBM hardware products are manufactured from new parts, or new and serviceable used parts. Regardless, our warranty terms apply. All customer examples cited or described in this presentation are presented as illustrations of the manner in which some customers have used IBM products and the results they may have achieved. Actual environmental costs and performance characteristics will vary depending on individual customer configurations and conditions. This publication was produced in the United States. IBM may not offer the products, services or features discussed in this document in other countries, and the information may be subject to change without notice. Consult your local IBM business contact for information on the product or services available in your area. All statements regarding IBM's future direction and intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice, and represent goals and objectives only.Information about non-IBM products is obtained from the manufacturers of those products or their published announcements. IBM has not tested those products and cannot confirm the performance, compatibility, or any other claims related to non-IBM products. Questions on the capabilities of non-IBM products should be addressed to the suppliers of those products.Prices subject to change without notice. Smarter Systems for a Smarter Planet

zEnterprise Unified Resource ManagerTransforming the way resources are managed and deployed

How is it different?Heterogeneous management: Total systems management across heterogeneous resources

Integration: Single point of control, common skills for resources, reduced complexity of day to day operations

Monitoring. New dashboard for CPU resources and energy management

Simplified installation: Auto discovery and configuration of resources and workloads with single interface

Secure: Improved network security with lower latency, less hops and less complexity. Improved control of access due to management of hypervisors as firmware

Service and support management: Hardware problem detection, reporting and call home supported for virtual machines and blades

What is it? Unified Resource Manager provides workload awareness to optimize the system resources in accordance with understanding the policies assigned to that particular workload. Functions are grouped into two suites of tiered functionality that enable different levels of capability - Manage suite and Automate suite.

zEnterprise Ensemble

A zEnterprise Node is a single zCECwith 0 to 4 racks with up to two blade centers per rack

A zEnterprise Ensemble is a collection of 1 to 8 zEnterprise Nodes managed as a single virtualized pool of server resources

A zEnterprise node can be a member of a single ensemble

An ensemble is the management scope for the Unified Resource Manager

A primary / alternate pair of HMCsprovide the management console for the ensemble

– The alternate HMC takes over in case the primary fails

Synergy with z/VM

Server and application consolidation on System z using Linux and z/VM is the industry leader in large-scale, cost-efficient virtual server hostingzEnterprise introduces virtual server provisioning and management for Linuxguests running on z/VM

– Use the Unified Resource Manager to create z/VM virtual machines– Simplify the skill level needed to manage a Linux on z/VM environment

Faster cores and a bigger system cache on the z196 let you do even more with less when running Linux on z/VMIntegrated blades on zBX offer an new dimension for workload optimization

z/VM Enhancements for zEnterprise Unified Resource ManagerComplete virtual machine management from the HMC

Software– z/VM 6.1 with applicable PTFs (APAR VM64822 super ptf)

z/VM Management Guest – HPM and MAPz/VM SMAPI serverz/VM Directory Maintenance server (or equivalent)INMN and IEDN virtual switch controllersControl point for MAC assignment and VLAN access

– Supported Linux SLES and RHEL distributionsLegacy NIC can connect to IEDN or INMN via virtual switch

INMN and IEDN access provided via new z/VM virtual switch types– Up-link can be virtual machine NIC (for Management Guest purposes)– Ensemble membership conveys Ensemble UUID and MAC prefix– Automatic connection to INMN

SMAPI manages SYSTEM CONFIG z/VM is authoritative source of virtual machine state

– State changes automatically reflected to Unified Resource Manager

Super PTF will deliver all of the partsCustomer will have to perform many manual steps to get everything workingNext release of z/VM will incorporate all of the changes into the install baseConfiguration work needed for:

– SMAPI– TCP/IP– DIRMAINT (or your favorite Directory Manager)

Sample profiles should be on MAINT 193 mdiskCopy TCPIP DATA from TCPMAINT 592 to VSMREQIM 191

– Change TCPIPUSERID to point to DTCENS1 (a new vswitch controller virtual machine)Update VSMWORK1 AUTHLIST file on VMSYS:VSMWORK1. directory

– Duplicate existing line for VSMPROXY– Change VSMPROXY to ZVMLXAPP on duplicated line– This file has very particular attributes so it is mandatory that an existing line be duplicated rather than

adding a new line.

Implementation - TCPIP

Define two new vswitch controllers– Controllers for new INMN and IEDN vswitches– Named DTCENS1 and DTCENS2– Will be AUTOLOGGED by SMAPI

Copy sample profile exec to controller 191 mdisks– TCPROFIL EXEC from TCPMAINT 591 (rename to PROFILE EXEC when copy to 191 mdisk)

Update TCPMAINT 198 with new controller configuration files– Copy sample files– DTCENS1 STCPIP (from TCPMAINT 591)– DTCENS2 STCPIP (from TCPMAINT 591)– Configuration files are not interchangeable

DTCENS1 server will be the one providing application access to INMN– It is not interchangeable with DTCENS2– Requires class B privilege to execute VSWITCH related CP commands– Restricted to only INMN networks

DTCENS2 server can be a vswitch controller for either INMN or IEDN networks– Does not provide any application stack access to any network

Implementation – IPL System

When CP is loaded:– Checks to see if CEC is ensemble managed– Keeps OSM and OSX devices offline– Does not define any INMN and IEDN vswitches

VSMGUARD started by AUTOLOG1– Checks SMAPI configuration– Checks to see if CEC ensemble managed, and CP capable of being ensemble managed– Set Ensemble

Vary on OSM and OSX chpids, setup vswitches, vswitch controllersGet ensemble ID, set MACPREFIX, tell CP it is now in managed state

– Autolog all SMAPI servers and Management GuestNormal customer guests and networking connections started as usualINMN and IEDN connections are delayed until SMAPI sets up ensemble environment

Smarter Systems for a Smarter Planet

Summary

zEnterprise is a system of systemsAll components managed under single Unified Resource Managerz/VM participates in the ensemble management environment

– z/VM 6.1– PTF for VM64822 provides pieces– “Some assembly required” ☺– Supports both internal management network and intra ensemble data network– New OSA chpid types only available when ensemble managed– Restricted management vswitches only created by SMAPI– SMAPI handles all interaction with Unified Resource Manager

A z/VM LPAR can run on an ensemble managed CEC without participating in the ensemble management environment
