Dear Friends,As we begin another year, it is remarkable to see how Jewish life has grown on our campuses and in our community. In many ways, Hillel of San Diego is a microcosm of the Jewish world and reflects the diversity of Jewish life. Our three programs – Hillel at UCSD, Hillel at SDSU, and North County Hillel – each take a unique approach to a common goal of inspiring and enabling young Jews to find their place in the world.
Hillel at UCSD, led by Keri Copans, continues to empower highly-motivated student leaders, who are setting the stage to be the future leaders of the Jewish community. From highly-attended Shabbat dinners to service trips abroad to continuous engagement in pro-Israel activities on campus, Hillel at UCSD continuously sets a high bar for quality programs.
Hillel at SDSU, under the leadership of 35-year Hillel professional Jackie Tolley, has embarked on an exciting year of changes and new beginnings. Construction is underway on the Melvin Garb Hillel Center, which will serve as a beacon of creative Jewish experiences and a point of pride for the San Diego Jewish community. Our new facility – located in the heart of SDSU’s campus community – will not only provide a proper home away from home for Jewish students, but it will also serve as a vital hub with space to create, organize and implement a full array of programs. Construction is underway, and the building is scheduled to open by Fall 2014.
North County Hillel, led by Jessica Kronis, not only provides an on-campus Jewish presence for students at CSU San Marcos, Palomar, and MiraCosta, but it also provides innovative and meaningful programs for university-age Jews who live throughout North County. Our exciting new “JCoast Network” seeks to build cohorts of university-age Jews throughout the north coastal communities as a “Hillel without Walls” concept.
None of these incredible programs and accomplishments would be possible without your generous support. Generations of alumni, parents, faculty and friends, along with foundations, have invested in Hillel of San Diego. This generation of university-age Jews will lead in their professions and communities and make their mark on the world in significant ways. We are proud to provide them with opportunities to deepen and explore their Jewish identities, knowledge and values, and are deeply grateful to those who are joining us.
Our mission at Hillel of San Diego is to inspire and enable young Jews to find their place in the world. We hope you enjoy reading more about our inspiring programs and the students who are impacted by what we do. We appreciate your interest and partnerships as we build a legacy of Jewish life in San Diego.
Warm Regards,
Michael Rabkin Emily JenneweinExecutive Director President

ISRAEL ON CAMPUS
Hillel encourages students of all backgrounds to form deep, personal connections to Jewish life, learning and Israel, through Jewish exploration, leadership, and a sense of belonging. We provide opportunities for students to build lifelong connections —to their Jewish life, to each other and to Jewish communities worldwide.
WHAT IS OUR IMPACT?
85% of American Jews go to college
Hillel is the only Jewish college organization with the capacity to engage the majority of university-age Jews in San Diego.

Hillel at SDSUHillel at SDSU provides a welcoming environment that helps make a huge university feel small and comfortable for Jewish students. Working in cooperation with the Jewish Student Union and Aztecs for Israel, Hillel offers meaningful opportunities for students to socialize, grow Jewishly, and build leadership skills. While much Hillel programming happens on campus, the Hillel house, which will soon be replaced by the Melvin Garb Hillel Center, has been a popular spot for activities. Programs include Shabbat dinners and services, volunteer projects, Israel engagement and education activities with our Jewish Agency Israel Fellow, and alternative break trips that blend community service and Jewish learning.
2012-2013 Program Highlights
MITZVAH DAY Each year Hillel at SDSU partners with service organizations all over San Diego County for a day of service to better the greater San Diego community. This annual event, now in its 16th year, had close to 100 students working on 12 service projects. Student volunteers collected food for the Hand up Youth Food Pantry, served meals at the Resuce Mission and entertained seniors at the Jacob Health Care Center. This experience continues to be an unforgettable one for students.
CHANUKAH PARTYStudents organizing the Hillel Chanukah party chose to ‘embrace’ a family for the holidays through the Embrace a Family program at Jewish Family Services to provide some joy for families in need. The students organized a progressive auction to raise money to buy gifts, made latkes, played games and painted messages on the living room wall of their temporary Hillel house in anticipation of the building being torn down to make way for the new Melvin Garb Hillel Center.
Paulina King, SDSU Class of ‘15 Someone once told me that life is about connections. I could not agree more. When I reflect on my happiest memories there is always one feeling present: a sense of belonging. Hillel has allowed my sense of belonging to bloom in the Jewish community at SDSU. Finding Hillel has become the single most important event in my life. A close friend persisted in inviting me to Hillel events until I finally agreed and things went up from there. That same friend later convinced me to apply to Taglit Birthright with Hillel. In June 2012 I went on the trip of my life, making best friends, unforgettable memories, and finding out about my obsession with Israel. For me, it only took one person to make a difference, forever changing the course of my life. I hope to be that person for others.
Kara Rosenwald, SDSU ’01I cannot say enough about how Hillel benefited me as a student at San Diego State! When I got to campus I looked for the Hillel, I wanted to be involved, have a place to celebrate holidays and to eat kosher food. Students take turns helping with meals so I signed up….Little did I know I was about to meet the man I was going to marry! Celebrating 12 years and 2 children later, we both look back at the times we spent at Hillel Shabbats and smile. Hillel was my home away from home, somewhere to go to see friends, talk to the supportive staff and experience being Jewish all year long!
For me, it only took one person to make a difference, forever
changing the course of my life.— Paulina King, SDSU Class of ‘15
Hillel at UCSDHillel at UCSD offers programs that emphasize Jewish life and learning, community service, Israel, and of course, fun! Our student leaders are highly active and are committed to building a strong Jewish community on campus. With Jewish students representing a range of ethnicities, identities and interests, Hillel supports 10 active student groups including LGBTQ, Persian, Russian, pro-Israel, arts, and Jewish fraternities and sororities. Programs include weekly Shabbat dinners, Israel engagement and education activities with our Israel Fellow, and international alternative breaks that blend community service with Jewish learning.
2012-2013 Program Highlights
COMMUNITY SHABBAT DINNER On March 8, over 120 members of San Diego’s Jewish community came together for a Shabbat dinner in UCSD’s Price Center East Ballroom. The attendees included students representing 13 Jewish student organizations and initiatives, local Jewish community leaders, Hillel’s organizational partners, and UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla. Thanks to generous underwriting by Susan & Jim Morris and Erna & Andrew Viterbi, the Shabbat Dinner was an opportunity to celebrate UCSD’s rich and diverse Jewish community and to show support for Jewish students amidst ongoing anti-Israel activities on campus.
ARTISTS4ISRAELOn April 16, Hillel celebrated Israel Independence Day at UCSD with Artists4Israel, an Israel-advocacy organization, in partnership with the Jewish National Fund, that uses art as a means for Israel education. Students congregated on UCSD’s Library Walk to dance to Israeli music, enjoy live graffiti demonstrations by five of New York’s most infamous artists, and create their own graffiti installations in celebration of Israel.
Nathan Lacy, UCSD Class of ‘15Nothing comes close to Hillel in terms of engagement programs for students to develop in the Jewish community here at UCSD. Hillel has allowed me to feel connected to my Jewish and Queer identities simultaneously. The support from Hillel staff and my Jewish peers has made me feel safe and secure about expressing myself on campus and in the workplace. Without Hillel-sponsored programs I would not have become a leader in my fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi, or Keshet, a Queer-Jewish student group at UCSD.
Nothing comes close to Hillel in terms of engagement programs for students to develop in the Jewish community here at UCSD.— Nathan Lacy, UCSD Class of ‘15

Hillel of North CountyUnder a continuing grant from the Leichtag Foundation, Hillel has been serving North County campuses since 2008. The program has evolved to address the needs of a wide array of university-age Jews in and out of school living primarily along the coast. The North County Hillel student board offers leadership development opportunities for students and non-students alike. North County Hillel’s strong presence on each campus includes college fairs and public events that promote Jewish life in collaboration with university departments and program centers. Hillel hosts Shabbat dinners at the Hillel house near CSUSM, at the Ranch in Encinitas, and on the beach. Hillel’s new “JCoast Network” seeks to build cohorts of university-age Jews throughout the north coastal communities as a “Hillel Without Walls” concept.
2012-2013 Program Highlights
YOM HASHOAHOn April 8, at CSUSM North County Hillel held the inaugural commemoration of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day in the middle of campus at CSU- San Marcos. In partnership with the Cross Cultural Center, the Student Life team, and the LGBTQ Pride Center on Campus, this powerful ceremony invited participants to share stories about Holocaust survivors. The crowd of students grew throughout the day as they were moved by incredible stories of strength and courage.
SHABBAT DINNER HONORING GRADUATESForty-five students and community members attended Shabbat dinner in the San Marcos Hillel house on May 10 to honor graduating students. This was the largest crowd to ever participate in Shabbat dinner at the San Marcos Hillel house. Students, family and friends led a beautiful and meaningful Shabbat dinner that celebrated the incredible achievements of our students in North County.

Tess Halpern, North County Hillel PresidentI became involved with Hillel when my sister introduced me to Jessica, the North County Director. We were excited when we heard that we could qualify for a Birthright trip and immediately applied. Going to Israel with Hillel was an incredible, life-changing experience that I’ll never forget. We met interesting people from all around the world and got to experience our Jewish journey together. Since returning from Israel I have embraced Hillel and with the staff’s encouragement, I am proud to be the North County President. I am excited to help shape this great journey for other young Jews and to create a community where we can learn, grow and come together.

Hillel President
THE COLLEGE CAMPUS HAS EMERGED as a breeding ground for newly virulent outbreaks of anti-Israel activities. An anti-Israel presence on campus is seizing opportunities to launch campaigns that demonize Israel and seek to delegitimize Israel as the Jewish state. Hillel is the front-line Jewish organization
leading positive Israel engagement, education and advocacy on campus.
Hillel of San Diego employs two Israelis who serve as shlichim (“ambassadors”) at UCSD and SDSU. Niran Avni and Hen Caspi are part of a national cadre of nearly 60 Jewish Agency Israel Fellows. The program, a collaboration between Hillel and the Jewish Agency for Israel, places young Israeli IDF veterans on strategically selected campuses to serve as peer ambassadors who play a critical role in connecting Jewish students with Israel, educate and promote a positive image of Israel to the campus community and counter anti-Israel propaganda.
With underwriting by the Koret Foundation and the Galinson Family Foundation in 2012-13, these Campus Israel Fellows bring Israel alive for thousands of Jewish students. They connect students with direct Israel travel opportunities and bring Israel to campus with campus-wide Israel celebrations, cultural programs, Hebrew language classes and prominent guest speakers. They bring strong leadership and critical support to pro-Israel student advocates on campus.
To learn more, or to find out how you can meet Niran and Hen, please contact Executive Director Michael Rabkin at [email protected] or (858) 550-2210.
ISRAEL ON CAMPUS
Niran Avni serves as the Jewish Agency Israel Fellow to Hillel at UCSD. Niran was born and raised in Hod Hasharon, Israel. In his military service, Niran served as an officer in the IDF as the Deputy Advisor for Palestinian Affairs in Hebron, where he interfaced between Palestinians and the IDF. He is currently studying at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya for his BA in Government, Diplomacy and Strategy. During his first year of undergraduate studies, Niran was selected by “MASA” to dorm with international college graduates who came to study and volunteer in Israel. He helped them to mediate cultural differences and introduced them to various aspects of Israel.
Hen Caspi is the Jewish Agency Israel Fellow to Hillel at SDSU. Hen (meaning Grace in Hebrew) was born in Tel Aviv and grew up in Israel. Before joining the IDF, Hen took her first trip to the U.S and fell in love with the most beautiful city in the U.S., San Diego! In the IDF, Hen served as an officer in the Air Force. As a student at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Hen was a head coordinator of the Perach project (the Israeli “Big Brother-Big Sister” program) and also volunteered at a mental health hospital and in low-income neighborhoods. Hen completed a B.A in behavioral science in 2011. She then served at Tulane Hillel as Jewish Agency Israel Fellow from 2011 to 2012.

FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHTS
Lori Bolotin Memorial GiftsAs Hillel’s Development Director from 2007 to 2012, Lori Bolotin (z”l) made an indelible mark on San Diego’s Jewish community, and her tragic loss was felt by many. To honor Lori’s memory, her parents, Sandra and Arthur Levinson, established the Lori Bolotin Development Director for Hillel of San Diego Endowment Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation with a commitment to fund the position in perpetuity. Appointed in June 2013, Stacey Loomis is the first person to hold this position. Separately, Howard Bolotin made a gift to establish the Lori Bolotin Professional Development Fund to be used for training and development of Hillel’s professional staff over the next three years.
The Melvin Garb Hillel Center at SDSUConstruction is underway on the Melvin Garb Hillel Center at SDSU, and the facility will be completed by mid-2014. The two-story, 10,500 square-foot modern building with silver LEED certification is located in the heart of SDSU’s housing corridor on Lindo Paseo, a short walk from the center of campus. With the lead naming gift of $2.5 million from the Melvin Garb Foundation and the leadership of Campaign Committee Chair
Herbert J. Solomon, Hillel is close to achieving our $9 million goal to cover the costs of land, construction, furnishings and operations.
Leichtag Foundation Grant RenewedThe Leichtag Foundation has renewed its support of Hillel’s program in North County with a two-year grant totaling $462,185 to transform Jewish life for college-age Jews at CSUSM, Palomar, MiraCosta, and throughout the North County coastal area. The grant provides funding for Hillel to launch the new “JCoast” initiative and to increase engagement of Jewish students on campus.
Hillel Center in La JollaHillel pressed forward with plans to a construct a permanent space to nurture the religious, spiritual and intellectual growth of Jewish Students at UCSD. Hillel’s leaders, with support from friends of Hillel, presented at various La Jolla community planning groups throughout 2012-13 and released a draft environmental impact report. Hillel will go to City Council for a site development permit in 2014. Hillel’s temporary administrative headquarters and UCSD offices are generously provided by the Potiker Family Foundation.
