Board Chair & Executive DirectorShalom!

We’re thrilled to report that it’s been a year of transformative growth for North Carolina Hillel!

With more resources and NC Hillel professional staff on campuses across the state, we’re reaching more students, in more meaningful ways, than ever before. We’ve hired talented staff members to support student leaders at NC State University, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Greensboro and Guilford College, complementing the robust staff team at Carolina. The immediate impact of their work, and our strategic plan adopted in 2013, is detailed on the next page.

We are also delighted to announce the hiring of NC Hillel’s first full-time campus rabbi in more than 15 years! Rabbi Ariel Naveh was ordained from Hebrew Union College in May and began working for NC Hillel in July. His background in Israel education and social justice has already brought a meaningful, grounded Jewish perspective on a variety of issues to students in just a few short months on campus.

This report is filled with stories and photos from our students’ adventures at home and abroad. Their personal reflections are the best way to show just how much your generosity means to our students, who can always count on a home away from home at Hillel.

We’re proud to have something for everyone here. All students are welcome, regardless of their family or educational background or level of religious observance. Facilitating a vibrant Jewish campus life that fits every student’s interests and potential is our mission at North Carolina Hillel.

Parents, alumni and friends in the community like you make all of this work possible. Thank you for your partnership and commitment to our Jewish students and our Jewish future. With gratitude,

Updates from North Carolina Hillel

Strategic plan update

After an in-depth assessment of NC Hillel’s strengths and areas for improvement, NC Hillel adopted a new strategic plan in 2013 to better support Jewish students across North Carolina.

For many years most Jewish North Carolinians attended UNC-Chapel Hill, with a small number at NC State or Duke, if they chose to stay in state for college. But nowadays, as the state’s demographics change rapidly, more and more Jewish students are attending other public schools.

It became clear that providing more resources and a stronger infrastructure to students at the other campuses with the highest potential for Jewish community growth was critical to building a strong Jewish future in North Carolina. In addition, we hoped to improve the depth of the Jewish experience at UNC-Chapel Hill by hiring a full-time campus rabbi to serve as a Senior Jewish Educator.

Since the adoption of the strategic plan, we’ve moved full steam ahead to begin ramping up support for the campuses that desperately needed it. We’ve also worked with several private NC colleges and universities whose leaders have expressed interest in independently investing in Jewish life on campus.

Hire a part-time staff member to support Jewish students at NC State Hillel (January 2014)

Hire a part-time staff member to support Jewish students at UNC-Charlotte Hillel (September 2014)

Hire a full-time staff member to support Jewish students at UNC-Greensboro and Guilford College Hillels, in partnership with Guilford College (July 2015)

Hire a full-time rabbi/Senior Jewish Educator at UNC-Chapel Hill Hillel (July 2015)

Hire a part-time staff member to support Jewish students at Appalachian State Hillel (target: July 2016)

At NC State, the number of core Hillel students went up 92% after just 1.5 years of support from a Hillel staff member. The total number of students engaged also increased by 72%.

At UNC-Charlotte, the number of core Hillel students went up 100% after just one year of support from a Hillel staff member. The total number of students engaged also increased by 33%.

Jewish life at

UNC-Chapel HillJewish life at Carolina is vibrant and thriving.

A board of talented student leaders, supported by four full-time professional program staff members, plans a variety of programs, social events and résumé-building leadership opportunities each semester.

From holiday parties to hamentaschen baking to the meaningful “Ask Big Questions” conversation series, Jewish Tar Heels can explore their values and identities in their own unique ways through UNC Hillel.

Along the way, they find a home on campus, forming lifelong friendships and building a strong and impactful community.

MY STORY | Brian Gaynor UNC-Chapel Hill ‘16 Rockville, MD

I did not initially plan on becoming hugely involved in UNC’s Jewish community before coming to college, but NC Hillel made it easy to fall in love with Jewish life on campus. The students and staff at Hillel welcomed me with open arms from the beginning of my first year at UNC, and I quickly found myself coming to Shabbat dinners every week and devoting much of my time to extracurricular activities with Hillel.

UNC Hillel has provided me with a thriving, multi-faceted Jewish community that extends far beyond the sanctuary. I have advocated for peace in Israel with J Street UNC, participated in discussions about Judaism and social justice, and helped prepare weekly Friday night dinners, all while building cherished relationships with other Jewish students. UNC Hillel has been an integral part of my college journey, helping me to deeply explore my personal relationship with Judaism. For all of this and more, I am grateful for everything that UNC Hillel has provided me during my four years at Carolina.

The student board helped out as “servers” at a successful fundraiser to renovate the UNC Hillel dining room and kitchen.

More than 100 students enjoyed a festive Purim party at Top of the Hill, complete with a silly photo booth perfect for selfies!

Hamanstaschen with assorted fillings was just one of last year’s many cooking and baking projects.

Jewish life on campus

Across North CarolinaJewish life at other campuses across North

Carolina has grown dramatically over the past two years as a result of NC Hillel’s strategic plan. With increased support from new NC Hillel staff members at NC State, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Greensboro and Guilford College Hillels, activities have increased in number and engagement has deepened significantly.

Students in our statewide network of campuses enjoy regular Shabbat dinners, campus speakers, and unique events for their diverse communities. They also participate on NC Hillel’s free Birthright Israel trips, the annual statewide leadership retreat and more.

MY STORY | Zachary Goldberger NC State ‘17 Cary, NC

There is no other place at NCSU where I feel a part of such a great, collaborative group. The board members and students involved have made my time here one to remember. Whether it is a Shabbat dinner or a weekly event, you know you are going to have a good time with great friends, many laughs and of course some tasty food.

The opportunity I have had to be a part of the NCSU Hillel board has given me many professional skills for my future. Being able to manage a large group and assist with planning events is something not many students have the opportunity to experience in college. The people I have met, worked with and enjoyed memorable times with will always stick with me as I continue on my career path.

Hillel is always something I wanted to be involved with, but I never could have imagined the impact it would have on me.

UNC-Greensboro Hillel students volunteered to help staff Beth David Synagogue’s book sale.

UNC-Charlotte Hillel hosted the fall semester Statewide Shabbat dinner with students from campuses across NC.

NC State Hillel students welcomed head basketball Coach Mark Gottfried as the special guest at their bagel brunch.

Floating in the Dead Sea is one of the highlights of every Birthright Israel trip.

Winter 2014 participants took in panoramic views of the Golan Heights.

Experiencing

Birthright Israel

440students from 20 campuses have gone on NC Hillel Birthright Israel trips since 2010

Each year, North Carolina Hillel sends 80-120 students on a free, once-in-a-lifetime, 10-day trip to Israel through Birthright Israel. Each bus of 40 students is composed of students from campuses across North Carolina as well as eight Israeli peers.

The trip is a whirlwind journey throughout the country, and students have the opportunity to tour ancient synagogues, explore the Old City of Jerusalem and hip Tel Aviv, float in the Dead Sea, hike the Golan Heights and much, much more.

Though the trip is exhausting, students return with a deeper sense of Jewish identity and connection to Israel – and they’ve made a new, tight-knit group of North Carolina Jewish friends.

MY STORY | Laura Feinleib UNC-Chapel Hill ‘17 Ellicott City, MD

After completing an incredible Birthright trip with NC Hillel and hopping around Europe for a few weeks, I headed to Tel Aviv to begin a two-month internship program coordinated by Onward Israel for a biotech startup called MobileODT. My experience at the company granted me hands-on skills I can now tout to future employers, especially as Israel is known as the “Start Up Nation,” home to thousands of hi-tech hubs.

Birthright is a wonderful experience, but 10 days were simply not enough to understand Israel in its entirety: the good AND the bad. During Onward, we spoke to members of the ultra-orthodox community about the religious and secular divide, listened to heartbreaking stories from Israeli Arabs (we were just yards from the Gaza strip), and spent a weekend with families who were no strangers to hearing bomb sirens once a week.

Back at UNC now, I don’t want my connection to Israel to end. I’ve been inspired to attend discussions and talks about Israel, especially in current times when there is so much controversy surrounding the country. I wouldn’t trade this summer in Israel for the world, and can’t wait for the next chance I have to return that beautiful place I now truly call my home.

Israel on campusNorth Carolina Hillel students are committed to exploring their relationships with Israel even when they’re not traveling on Birthright Israel trips or returning to the country for internships or study abroad.

We were happy to welcome Itay Asaf, who grew up on a kibbutz in the north of the country and served in the Israeli Defense Forces, as NC Hillel’s fourth Israel Fellow through a partnership with the Jewish Agency for Israel. Itay speaks to students across the state about the conflict and his personal experiences in Israel, working especially closely with students interested in regional politics to serve as a resource for campus conversations about Israel.

As a sports enthusiast and former basketball coach, Itay has also enjoyed leading a team of students to compete in the National Hillel Basketball Tournament, and he has hosted weekly classes to teach students krav maga, the Israeli martial art.

Israeli graffiti artists were the highlight of UNC Hillel’s IsraelFest. They engaged the whole campus community in painting a mural of Tar Heel mascot Ramses in the Pit!

UNC Hillel students welcomed well known Israeli DJ, musician and Tel Aviv University professor Eyal Rob to discuss Tel Aviv’s urban music scene and multi-ethnic culture. He even made a guest appearance on student leader Allana Geoffrion’s campus radio show!

National Hillel Basketball Tournament

Hillel International CEO visits NC

NC Hillel Israel Fellow Itay Asaf led a team of NC Hillel students to compete in the student-led National Hillel Basketball Tournament at the University of Maryland after several months of training. UNC-Chapel Hill senior Brian Gaynor helped recruit teammates and served as the team’s captain.

Teams from 27 different Hillels across the country competed in the weekend-long tournament, which was kicked off by a Shabbat dinner hosted by the University of Maryland Hillel and attended by more than 600 guests.

Hillel International President and CEO Eric Fingerhut made a special visit to North Carolina to serve as the keynote speaker for the Greensboro Jewish Federation’s campaign kickoff event, whose theme was Jewish life on campus.

Fingerhut, who is the former leader of the Ohio state university system, also visited UNC-Chapel Hill to participate in a special lunch followed by a moderated discussion with UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Carol Folt. Fingerhut and Folt reflected on interfaith diversity on campus and discussed the increased controversy about Israel that has affected many colleges and universities across the country.

Of blessed memory Of blessed memory

NC Hillel would be a shadow of what it is today without the bold leadership and remarkable support of Leonard Kaplan, zichrono l’vracha – may his memory be for a blessing – and his beloved wife, Tobee. They have been NC Hillel’s most generous supporters for over 20 years; they both have a deep love for the Jewish community and care immensely about Jewish youth. Leonard and Tobee’s profound dedication to the Jewish people is evident in the values of their children, Randall and Kathy, Lyn and Barry, and Scott and Maeve.

Leonard was kind, gentle and humble; he was a philanthropic visionary, a leader and a mensch. He was one of a kind, and we will miss him greatly.

Miriam Brenner’s life revolved around her love of family and Jewish community. She and her family have made a lasting impact on the Winston-Salem area and the Jews of North Carolina.

Through the Abe and Miriam Brenner Foundation, Miriam and her late husband Abe, and their children, Frank and Nancy, Mike and Wendy, Frances, and Susan and Steven, have been stalwart, generous supporters, helping North Carolina Hillel grow to inspire Jewish students across the state.

Miriam was sweet and always delighted to hear of NC Hillel’s successes; we are honored to have been able to give her much joy over the years. Zichrona l’vracha – may her memory be for a blessing.

Leonard Kaplan z”l (1928 - 2015) Miriam Brenner z”l (1922 - 2015)
