DAVID GREILSAMMER conductor/ piano

Rameau Platée: Suite de dansesRavel Piano Concerto in G MajorMozart Overture to La Clemenza di TitoSchubert Symphony No. 4 in C minor, Tragic

A night of elegance and light- heartedness awaits in this concert of spirited works that are full of vitality. Though called Tragic, Schubert’s sublime Symphony No. 4 contains as much bubbly, youthful vigor as tragedy. Heavily influenced by jazz, Ravel’s Piano Concerto is light, fanciful, and in the spirit of Mozart, while Mozart’s overture is full of elegance and flair. Rameau’s vivid and animated suite is a far cry from the refined and poised French courtly dances of the time.

Mozart Symphony No. 34 in C majorRiho Esko Maimets Commission for harp & fluteSibelius Symphony No. 1 in E minor

KWS harpist Lori Gemmel and former KWS flautist Kaili Maimets are featured in a commission by young Estonian-Canadian composer Riho Esko Maimets. Mozart’s Symphony No. 34 evokes scenes from a comic opera, while echoes of Tchaikovsky are heard in the opulent, soaring melodies of Sibelius’s Symphony No. 1. Written at the same time as Finlandia, this is his most lushly romantic symphony.

Barbara Croall Megyaakwaang (In the Woods) Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D majorKalinnikov Symphony No. 1 in G minor

The 75th anniversary season opens with a celebratory commission by Barbara Croall, and a performance by KWS Concertmaster Bénédicte Lauzière of one of the best-loved violin concertos. Kalinnikov is a lesser-known Russian composer who died at an early age but deserves a place among the Russian greats. His Symphony No. 1, written at the end of the 19th century, is full of beautiful, lush melodies and robust Russian character.

ANDREI FEHER conductor JULIE BOULIANNE mezzo-soprano

Duparc Aux étoilesFranck Les ÉolidesBerlioz Les nuits d’étéBeethoven Symphony No.7 in A major

On a weekend that celebrates the dark hours, this concert features works that pay homage to the night sky. The most exuberant of his symphonies, Beethoven’s visceral Symphony No. 7 has appealed to audiences since its première. A contrast between musical optimism and grave, sombre tones, it builds to the irrepressible whirling energy of the finale.

Music Director Laureate Edwin Outwater returns to the KWS for a program from both sides of the Atlantic featuring contemporary young American composer Caroline Shaw, and American cellist Oliver Herbert performing Barber’s Cello Concerto, rarely performed due to its extreme technical demands. English composer Elgar’s Enigma Variations is widely believed to involve a hidden melody and has generated much speculation that has never been conclusively answered.

Beethoven Egmont OvertureBeethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, EmperorShostakovich Symphony No. 5 in D minor

Mighty masterpieces of two famous composers dominate this program. Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto is one of the most accomplished of them all, ahead of its time with its virtuosic style and wide dynamic range. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, overcoming the oppressive confines of Stalin’s particularly toxic brand of communism, tackles all manner of human emotions with music that is deep, gripping, and ultimately uplifting.

Canadian virtuoso pianist Marc-André Hamelin, a multiple Grammy Award nominee, is recognized around the world for the originality and technical proficiency of his performances. He joins the KWS for Haydn’s lively Piano Concerto No. 11 and Strauss’s witty Burleske. Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 is composed in the style of Haydn with a truly classical feel, while Strauss’s transcendent tone poem, Death and Transfiguration, explores the mystery of death and what might lie beyond.

It was first performed by the KWS for the triumphant opening of the Centre in the Square on September 22, 1980 and was led by Raffi Armenian, an important figure in the history of the KWS and one of Andrei’s teachers. AS A DONOR YOU ARE INSTRUMENTAL!

Bridge to Music participants and teachers at their final recital.

KWS clarinetist Barbara Hankins performs at Winston Park retirement residence.

Every season you, KWS donors, impact the lives of over 100,000 people by contributing over one-third of our annual revenue which helps provide various concert series, educational programs, and outreach initiatives.

You bring calm to the stressed, hope to the devastated, and ideas to the uninspired. You help transcend barriers — economic, age, language — to create a sense of community among a hall full of strangers.

For more information on how you can share the joys and benefits of music, please visit kwsymphony.ca or call 519-745-4711 ext 275. Thank you!

“The symphony adds a layer of richness to our community’s cultural fabric. They have an ability to connect our community in an unexpected manner, regardless of age, culture, or social structure.” — Nico Giorgio, Marketing & Events Supervisor, Heffner Lexus Toyota

“KWS is a shining gem in an artistic necklace that represents our cultural legacy. Their value to the community cannot be overstated” —Chris Johnson, President, Tri-Spec Ltd.
