The Family’s Role & Hearing Loss

The Family’s Role& Hearing Loss

The family plays a critical role in helping to meet the emotional and psychological needs of your hearing-impaired family member. It is a role filled with understanding and support. Consider the following when speaking to someone with a hearing loss:

1. Attract their attention. There is little benefit in speaking if they do not realize you are talking to them.

2. Always face the person. They need to watch your face for clues. Lip movements and body gestures are an important part of their listening.

3. Move closer. Voices can fade around corners and across distances.

4.Speak slowly and distinctly. Louder is NOT better. Yelling will distort the words and hurt your throat.

5. Wait and watch. Stop when you see signs of uncertainty. Repeat yourself. Start again and watch to be sure that youare being understood.

6.Save important talk for appropriate times. Discuss important matters during ideal hearing conditions. Find a quiet, calm environment.

Your support and encouragement are as important asthe hearing aid itself.

Consequences of Hearing Loss

Studies have linked untreated hearing loss to:

• Irritability, negativism and anger • Fatigue, tension, stress and depression • Avoidance or withdrawal from social situations

• Social rejection and loneliness

• Reduced alertness and increased risk to personal safety • Impaired memory and ability to learn new tasks • Reduced job performance and earning power • Diminished psychological and overall health

Consequences of Hearing Loss

If you checked any of the above statements, hearing devices may help you. Schedule a hearing test today to learn more.

Take the 5 minute hearing test –

I have difficulty understanding speech in the presence of background noise or in a crowded restaurant.

I avoid social situations that require me to participate in conversations.

I avoid the movies or theater because I miss so much.

I have greater difficulty understanding females and children.

My family and friends complain that I am not hearing accurately.

Others notice that I turn the volume on my television or radio too loud.

I have difficulty conversing on the telephone.

I ask others to repeat themselves often during conversations.

 Practice Protocols

Sound Advice promises to provide hearing aid fittings based on the most current evidenced-based protocols. We follow the ethical guidelines of all the audiology professional affiliations. When werecommend hearing aids we adhere to the following protocol:

Hearing Aid Evaluation and Selection is the time spent determining communication needs and lifestyle.

Hearing Aid Fitting and Orientation is the time spent programming the hearing aid to meet the wearer’s needs.

Before the hearing aid fitting and orientation we perform an Electroacoustic Analysis on the hearing aid to ensure that all of the features are working correctly.

Speech Mapping Verification helps determine that the settings programmed into the hearing aid are appropriate based on clinical research and evidence.

Validation Measures are used to assess and document hearing aid benefit. We use evidence-based tools that compare the patient’s reported difficulty in the unaided condition with their amount of difficulty in the aided condition.

10 Tips for Best Hearing Aid Performance

Hearing Aids: How to choose the right oneToday’s hearing aids contain digital processors (computer chips). The more advanced chips can reduce background noise significantly, making speech clearer and easier to understand. The ideal fit for a hearing aid is when the patient is not even aware they are hearing through the hearing aid. Following are common hearing aid styles:MICRO-IN-THE-CANAL Custom molded to fit completely inside your ear canal and is essentially invisible from the outside. These aids are relatively new and can fit a variety of hearing losses from mild to moderately severe. Due to size constraints, no directional sound pick up from dual microphones is available. Dual microphones are designed to help reduce background noise.

COMPLETELY IN THE CANAL Custom molded to fit inside your ear canal with very little visibility. Can fit mild to moderate hearing loss. Due to size constraints, no directional sound pick up from dual microphones is available. Dual microphones are designed to help reduce background noise.

IN THE CANAL Custom molded and fits partly in the ear canal, but not as deeply as the completely-in-the-canal aid. Can fit mild to moderate hearing loss. Can be made to wirelessly communicate both hearing aids. Directional sound pick up from dual microphones is available. Dual microphones are designed to help reduce background noise.

RECEIVER IN THE EAR (RIC) The most popular style of hearing aid currently fit today. A very small behind-the-ear-style device with a wire to connect the hearing aid to a receiver (speaker) in the ear canal. These aids can leave the ear canal open, or unoccluded, for a more natural sound quality. Hearing aids communicate wirelessly. Has directional sound pick up from dual microphones designed to help reduce background noise.

BEHIND THE EAR A classic, traditional style hearing aid seldom used today. The hearing aid picks up sound, amplifies it and carries the amplified sound to an ear mold that fits inside your ear canal. This style hearing aid is not often fit today.

10 Tips for Best Hearing Aid Performance

1. Remove your hearing aids at night.

2. Open the battery doors every night.

3. Every night, use a clean, dry tissue to gently wipe the outer part of your hearing aids. If you have earmolds, use the cleaning tool loop to clean the earmold’s opening.

4. Keep hearing aids away from extreme heat and cold.

5. Do not wear hearing aids while applying makeup or hair products.

6. Do not get hearing aids wet. Do not wear hearing aids while exercising.

7. Keep hearing aids and batteries away from children and pets.

8. Replace dead batteries when low battery beep occurs.

9. Remove the sticker from the back of the battery and place it on your calendar every time you replace your battery. Wait a couple of minutes after removing the sticker before inserting the battery into your hearing aid.

10. When you are down to your last 2 batteries, call our office to schedule an appointment. At this 4-6 month appointment, we will clean and check your hearing aids and give you another supply of batteries. (Some exclusions may apply.)
