    for winter? Some head for

    What is hibernation?

    This is a veryspecial kind of deep

    sleep It is brought on by

    short day lengths,cold temperatures

    and food shortages

    Why do animals

    hibernate? It is a survival strategy

    Dropping into a deep hibernation

    means animals are using less energy

    Food is scarce

    Animals miss the cold seasons

    hibernation? The animal is

    defenceless, which

    means it maybeattacked bypredators andeaten!

    How do animals prepare

    for hibernation? They try to put on as much fat as possible

    because they wont be eating much during

    the winter This is called brown fat, which is found

    across the back and shoulders, close to ananimals organs

    Brown fat works hard to deliver quickenergy to an animal coming out ofhibernation

    Light Sleepers

    Some animals are not true hibernators

    They are easily awakened during their

    winter slumbers These animals breathe a little more slowly

    and lower their body temperature a fewdegrees

    The wake up to forage between wintersnows

    Bears, skunks, raccoons

    Snakes cannot control theirbody heat so the only waythey can survive in coldweather is to go into

    hibernation Hibernate from October to

    April They will often go

    underground , in desertedrabbit or rodent burrows

    They sometimes hibernatein groups and over 800adders were once foundhibernating together

    Males sometimes emerge between 2and 5 weeks before the females, theyshed their skin before setting off insearch of a mate

    Hedgehogs hibernatefor 5 or 6 monthsduring the winter

    They prepare for theirlong sleep by eatinglots of food

    the cold While theyre asleep their heartbeat
