“Number 67 is from Ceylon.”
“His name is Karunananda.”
As Karunananda continued to run,
everyone’s eyes began to focus on him.
Then, suddenly, he started to speed up.
It was his last lap ― actually, he was
three laps behind.
Now nobody was laughing. Instead,
words of encouragement were heard.
“Keep going, Ceylon!”
“Hang in there, Karunananda!”
The spectators now understood what was happening. He
just wanted to run to the end. Soon, everyone was cheering him
on. Some were watching with tears in their eyes. When at last
Karunananda crossed the finishing line, he got a huge cheer from the
audience.
After the race, Karunananda explained his side of the story. “I
had a bad cold this week, but I was chosen to run for my country.
So my only goal was to run the whole race. That’s what I did, and
I’m happy with that.” And then he added, “I have a little daughter
back in my country. When she grows up, I will tell her: ‘Your father
didn’t win that race, but he never gave up!’ ”
Karunananda became a hero and showed the true spirit of the
Olympics: the most important thing is not to win but to take part.

After that, Dr. Kubodera and his team tried
to film a live giant squid in the wild. They tried
to do so more than 500 times, but they kept
failing. Finally, in 2012, they succeeded in
filming a live giant squid near the Ogasawara
Islands.
On the morning of that day, Dr. Kubodera
got into the latest submarine with the pilot and
a cameraman. It took about eight hours to dive
into the deep sea. The other members waited on
the ship above. They could only hear the voice of Dr. Kubodera by radio.
Suddenly, they heard his voice, “Here comes the giant.” They were able
to film a giant squid for more than 23 minutes. It was the most valuable
23 minutes for Dr. Kubodera and his team.
Through their success, we found out a little about the life of the giant
squid. But we still do not know much about the deep sea. Dr. Kubodera
said, “There are a lot of things in the world we have not yet found out
about. So when you get interested in something, please keep thinking
about it and trying to find it out.”

本校では,3年の教科書の最終シーンに登場するフレーズを使って,素敵なことが起こりました。アメリカに帰ってしまうティナに向けて,ミンホが言うセリフに,“I don’t like goodbyes. So, no goodbyes!” があります。私の学校の生徒たちは,このフレーズを自ら教科書から選び出し,卒業式にALTの先生への感謝の言葉として使いました。同 ペ ー ジ の “You don’t need to thank us. We’re friends, remember?” や “Let’s keep in touch.” も,職場体験でお世話になった人や,後輩に伝える卒業の言葉にしたいと話す生徒もいました。学校や生活で実際に生かせるフレーズが多く載っているのは,この教科書の特徴だと思います。

Hello, everyone. I’m Tina.I came to Japan last year. I take Japanese
lessons on weekends. I study Japanese very
hard. But it’s difficult for me.For example, in Japanese, you count pencils
this way ― ippon, nihon, sambon.... But you count
minutes this way ― ippun, nifun, sampun.... Pon-
hon-bon and pun-fun-pun. That’s confusing to me.
And this is another example. I learned a
Japanese phrase “kekkou desu.” It has different
meanings ― “That’s wonderful,” “That’s all right,”
or “No, thank you.” That’s very strange. How

I took a boat and arrived at the island very early in the morning. It was still dark and I saw the moon in the sky. I arrived on the east
side, and I saw a village there. But I didn’t want to meet anyone. So
I took the boat round to the west side. The sun rose. The ground was covered in green grass and pretty
flowers. First, I walked east. I saw an old farm on my left. After
walking for about half an hour, I saw a lake in front of me. I turned
left and went north. Next, I came to a river and went across it. Then
I saw a big tree. I turned right and went east again. Soon I came to
another tree. Under that tree I found the treasure. I’ll be rich for the

Manjiro and the four other men were so happy to find a ship on the sea.
However, when they saw the men on the ship, they were afraid of those men.
This is because those men were much taller and looked very strange. And
they didn’t even speak Japanese.
At first Manjiro was confused by the language called English. However,
he asked a lot of questions every day. Then he came to understand English
word by word. He liked talking with Captain Whitfield, the captain of the
whaling ship.
“Most of us come from America,” the captain said to Manjiro.
“What is ‘America’?” Manjiro asked the captain.
“It is the land of wonders. Some people call it the land of opportunity,”
the captain answered.
“What is ‘opportunity’?” Manjiro asked.
“It means possibility. What do you hope to do with your life?” the
captain asked Manjiro. This was the first time in his life that Manjiro was
asked about such a thing.
“The future is like the ocean. A big mystery, many dangers, and very
beautiful. It is full of opportunity,” Manjiro said to himself, and he was so
excited.

It was the fifth day of the Tokyo Olympics of 1964. The men’s
10,000-meter run was the highlight of the day. About seventy
thousand people were in the National Stadium.
At 4:05 p.m., the spectators went quiet. Their eyes were focused
on the thirty-eight runners at the starting line. Then, the starting
pistol sounded and the race began.
It is one of the longest and toughest races in sports. For the race,
the runners had to run twenty-five times around the 400-meter track.
In this particular race, after ten laps or so, some runners had to give
up and drop out. Then, in the last 80 meters, three runners dashed
forward. In the end, an American runner called Billy Mills crossed
the finishing line first. The audience were excited.
When the last runner crossed the line, everyone thought the race
was over. However, that runner didn’t stop. He just continued, all
alone. Some people laughed and shouted, “Hey, he’s a lap behind!”
But he kept on running after crossing the finishing line again. “He’s
still running. Is he two laps behind?” The spectators were puzzled.
“Who’s that runner?” they wondered. They looked at the program.

The people in Japan love to eat squid. They eat up about 700,000 tons
of squid a year. The Japanese common squid is about 25 to 30 centimeters
long. What is the largest squid in the world like? It is the giant squid.
The body of the largest giant squid is about fourteen meters long.
Giant squid live in the deep ocean, at a depth of 600 to 1,000 meters.
There is almost no light in the deep sea. So humans cannot see anything.
However, giant squid have big and sensitive eyes as large as volleyballs.
Thanks to these eyes, giant squid can see even in the deep sea.
Because they live in such darkness, we do not know much about
giant squid. But Dr. Kubodera Tsunemi, a Japanese marine biologist, is
trying to find out how giant squid live. In 2004, he took several pictures
of a live giant squid in the deep sea for the first time in the world. The
news surprised a lot of scientists and other people around the world.

Look at this photo. What do you
think it is? It’s a bomb. This kind of
bomb is called a landmine. There are
more than 100 million of them buried
in various countries around the world.
They have killed or injured hundreds of thousands of people.
Many were children.
Amemiya Kiyoshi, the president of a construction
machinery company, visited Cambodia on business in 1994.
As he was walking around Phnom Penh, he saw a lot of street
children. Many of them had terrible injuries. These injuries
were because of landmines. He met one young girl with an old
lady. This young girl’s parents were killed by landmines. The
old lady said, “Please help the people of this country.”
On the plane back to Japan, Mr. Amemiya felt deep sadness
and anger. He said to himself, “I’m an engineer. I’ll make a
machine to remove landmines and help the Cambodians!”
Mr. Amemiya told his employees the sad story of the
landmines in Cambodia. They wanted to help him. He
then star ted to look for people with knowledge about
landmines, and visited Cambodia to learn more. After
