PRESIDENT'S COLUMN
Your Executive Board has voted to publish "Geology of Alternate Energy Resources in the South-Central United States." Mr. Michael D. Campbell, Department of Geology, Rice University, will be the Editor. The volume will have papers on Frontier Areas and Exploration Techniques, Trend Areas and Exploration Techniques, Resource Develop- ment/Utilization, Environmental Considerations and Select- ed Bibliography for each Uranium, Lignite and Geopressured-Geothermal Energy.
The concept for this volume was developed as a result of the GSA Symposium on the subject held last fall here in Houston. The HGS had participated in the very successful symposium. It at this time appears that the volume will be available for distribution by May 1, 1977.
Our 1976-77 dues are coming in fairly good; however, I urge each of you to send your check if you haven't already done so.
Early experience with our new telephone only reserva- tion system indicates we need more consolidation of calls from the offices that have several geologists wishing to make a reservation. It would be helpful to haveone person call in for an office unit. We do appreciate your cooperation with this more economical system of making reservations.
HAL H. BYBEE, President Houston Geological Society
CONTINUING EDUCATION 1976-77
Dr. Robert Berg will present this year's first six hour continuing education program "Exploration for Sandstone Stratigraphic Traps" the afternoons of Novem ber 17 and 18 at the Exxon Auditorium. The course will cost $20 for students, $25 for participants who pre-register, and $30 for those who register at the door. Special AAPG Continuing Education Course notes, Series No. 3, will be included in the priceof the program. In conjunction with this program, the field trip committee is planning a field trip through the Brazos River Valley to its delta and barrier islands on Saturday, November 20. Details will be released next month.
Reservoir morphology can be predicted by interpreta- tion of depositional environments in cored sections by means of the vertical sequence of sedimentary structures, composi- tion, and texture. When cores or samples are not available, the vertical change in porosity and permeability may reflect grain size and compositional changes. Reservoir morpholo- gies are illustrated by field studies of (1) fluvial sandstones in point bars and braided channels, (2) deltaic sections with fluvial-channel or delta-destructional reservoir, (3) barrier bars and longshore bars, (4) shallow-marine sandstones, and (5) deep-water turbidite reservoirs. In each case, the relation of reservoir sandstones to the adjacent trap facies is clearly indicated by subsurface control.
Effectiveness of the trap facies can be calculated if the rock and fluid properties are known or can be estimated for reservoir conditions. Oil-column calculations show that a trap facies may be porous and permeable, yielding a significant quantity of water on test, and yet form an effective seal to oil columns of 50 to 75 ft. Oil trapped by capillary pressures in barrier facies can be augmented by down-dip hydro-dynamic flow. By the integration of all interpretations, reservoir, trap, and fluid pressures, stratigraphic oil columns can be evaluated quantitatively.
STEWART CHUBER, Chairman Continuing Education Committee
AAPG GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY WEEKS ENERGY RESOURCES TOWER
A groundbreaking ceremony for the Lewis G. Weeks Energy Resources Tower was held on the grounds of AAPG Headquarters in Tulsa on June 30. Honored guests were Dr. and Mrs. Weeks, who have contributed $1 million for the construction, and James E. Hara, president of Skelly Oil Co., which has contributed the property necessary for the expansion.
The Tower will rise from the parking lot of the present headquarters building and be joined to it. It will contain approximately 15,000 square feet which, with the 10,000 square feet in the existing building, will assure adequate expansion space for the future. A large petroleum geology library will be featured in the tower and, along with the DeGolyer collection at the University of Oklahoma, will provide an unparalleled resource base for studies in petroleum geology.
Tickets for Dr. Berg's lecture may be purchased by sending a check to: Continuing Education, Houston Geologi- cal society, 234 Esperson ~ i l d i n ~ , Houston, Texas 77002. Please indicate if you are interested in the Brazos River Field SOCIETY CALENDAR FOR NOVEMBER Trip.

CONCEPTS AND TECHNIQUES UTILIZED IN SUCCESS-FUL EXPLORATION FOR OIL-BEARING REEFS IN IN-DONESIA (Abstract)
by: Dr. Richard R. Vincelette and Dr. Norman H. Foster
Recent exploration activity (1971-present) has resultedin the discovery of significant oil reserves in Miocene agereefs in the Salawati basin of northwestern Irian Jaya,Indonesia.
The success of the program was the result of acombination of exploration techniques, including: (1)detailed facies analysis from pre-existing outcrop andsubsurface control; (2) recognition of the potential ofTertiary reefs as exploration targets; (3) recognition of thegeomorphic expression of subsurface reefs and detailed
interpretation of aerial photographs and remote-sensingimagery to determine location of reefs; (4) application ofmodern multifold seismic techniques to map reefs in thesubsurface; and (5) use of helicopter-transported rigs andmodern engineering techniques in drilling exploratory wellsin remote jungle terrain. Utilization of these fundamentalexploration concepts and techniques has resulted in anumber of significant oil discoveries.
The reservoir and trap are highly porous and permeableMiocene reefs, which have produced as much as 32,000BOPD from individual wells. The reefs obtain heights inexcess of 1,600 feet (490 meters) and range in areal extentfrom 2 to 48 square miles (5 to 124 square kilometers).Porosities within reefal carbonate rocks are as much as 43%and average 20% to 30%.
The knowledge gained from the current explorationprogram concerning reef morphology, porosity variations, tectonic history, surface expression of reefs, seismicresponse of reefs, and other factors which control these oilaccumulations should expedite future exploration efforts inthis, and similar basins.

JOHN D. MOODY-Biographical Sketch
John D. Moody is pres-ident of AAPG for 1976-77.He previously served asSecretary-Treasurer in1966-67. Mr. Moody wasborn in Denver, Colorado;graduated from highschool in Shreveport, Loui-siana; and attended collegeat the Colorado School ofMines where he receivedthree degrees and waselected to Tau Beta Pi andSigma Gamma Epsilon. A number ofhonors have been bestowed on Mr. Moody, two of which arethe AAPG Matson Award and AAPG Honorary Membership.
FUTURE TRENDS OF ENERGY EXPLORATION-(Astract)
by: John D. Moody
An increasing percentage of exploration will be conduct-ed by governments, putting more and more pressure on theprivate sector. In the United States exploration for oil and gaswill be directed towards low-capacitance reservoirs onshore, and towards less-hospitable environments offshore. Littleincrease in uranium exploration in the United States isforeseen in the absence of substantial price increases. Asgeophysical techniques improve, bright-spot technology willfind wider application and reduce exploration risks propor-tionately.
The principal restraints on exploration are politico-economic, shortage of capital, and natural resource limita-tions.
