Welcome to our spring 2011 catalogue …
Here you’ll find the new season of books, as well as backlist titles, from our Heritage Group Distribution publishing partners: Heritage House, RMB | Rocky Mountain Books, TouchWood Editions and Brindle & Glass.
We also have some great titles that are new to our distribution network, including Summit Studios’ entertaining travel–humour series.
We wish to draw your attention to the eco-publishing efforts of HGD and its partners through participation in the Forest Stewardship Council of Canada (FSC) certification program. FSC is an international certification and labelling system that guarantees that the paper chosen for consumer products such as books comes from responsibly managed forests and verified recycled sources. The FSC program certifies forests according to strict environmental and social standards, and fibre from these certified forests is tracked all the way to the consumer. Look for the FSC logo in the books we distribute and in our printed materials, including this catalogue. In addition to the logo, we’ve included below the Heritage Group Environmental Benefits Statement for 2010. We remain committed to these eco-initiatives going forward and will continue efforts in this important area.
A reminder that the websites of our publishing partners are displayed throughout the catalogue so that you can easily get additional information on new releases, upcoming events, authors and more.
As always, we appreciate your business and wish you all the best for the
spring 2011 season.

The star maps in this calendar apply throughout southern Canada, the northern United Sates, Great Britain and central Europe from 37˚ to 60˚ north latitude.

Asiatic Poppies, which include the fabled Himalayan (or Tibetan) Blue Poppy, are among the most desirable, yet most elusive, of garden plants. Growing in the remote alpine meadows of the world’s greatest mountain ranges, some 60 different species can be found.
As this stunning calendar demonstrates, the poppies bloom in a full range of showy, primary colours; they are so arresting and so brilliant that in the wild, the flowers can often be seen for miles across the wind-scoured landscape. Up close, they will stop you in your tracks. With 16 gorgeous photos, and the story behind each poppy, this calendar is a delight for any room in the house—even the gardening shed.
Bill terry is a retired CBC executive. He is the author of Blue Heaven: Encounters with the Blue Poppy. Since 1994, he has lived on BC’s Sunshine Coast with his wife, pursuing a life-long ambition to create the perfect garden. His collection of Asiatic Poppies is the most diverse in North America. READ ALL ABOUT IT: Hikers to Walk From East Coast to Vancouver
Canadians have long been fascinated with trekkers who conquered this country sea to sea, from John Hugh Gillis in 1906 to Terry Fox in 1980 to Rick Hansen in 1985. This adventure tale celebrates five Canadians who hiked from Halifax to Vancouver in 1921. For a nation struggling with post-war inflation, labour unrest and unemployment, the prospect of the 3,645-mile hike was a welcome distraction.
Daily reports from the competitors, who followed the CPR tracks, ran in the Halifax Herald and in other newspapers, and it wasn’t long before the race had become a national obsession to rival today’s Amazing Race television series or the Tour de France. Bands played. Crowds cheered. People placed their bets. By the time they were done, all five competitors had turned Canada “walking crazy.”
This story about men and women with modern-day derring-do is told in the vernacular of the day, with newspaper accounts and over 50 photographs.
Shirley Jean roll tucker is a theatre director and playwright whose works include The Queen of the Shuswap; You’re Loving, Kind and True, Jack Boy; The John L. Born and raised in Alberta, Shirley now lives in BC’s Okanagan.

Historical
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, travelling within North American bor-ders or beyond to exotic locations was difficult at best and disastrous at worst. Mary Schäffer, born into a Pennsylvania-based Quaker family in 1861, not only conquered international travel but also excelled as an explorer, surveyor and pho-tographer in the backcountry of Canada’s Rocky Mountains and the isolated communities of Japan and Formosa (now Taiwan).
Michale Lang’s new book features more than 200 of Mary Schäffer’s colourful, hand-painted lantern slides from the archives of the Whyte Musem of the Canadian Rockies. These unique works of art detail some of the indigenous people and breathtaking landscapes of the Rocky Mountains, along with tribal communities of Japan and Formosa. Schäffer’s writing, Michale Lang’s accompanying narrative and the book’s overall design (inspired by the work of Barbara Hodgson, author and designer of The Tattooed Map, No Place for a Lady and Opium) opens a unique window on the Victorian obsession with international travel and discovery.
Michale Lang is Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. Michale has written extensively for exhibitions and professional journals and has a Master of Arts in Historic Resource Management and a Master of Education in Administration and Curriculum Development from Gonzaga University.

Women Sleuths
Paula Savard’s life has stalled. Her lukewarm love life, job as an insurance adjuster and grownup children are more frustrating than exciting. However, she gets more than she asked for when her once best friend, Callie, is murdered while jogging to Paula’s inner-city Calgary home. The police suggest Callie was coming to Paula for help, which is news to Paula since they hadn’t seen each other in ages. Soon, Paula’s suspicions zero in on Callie’s new husband, Sam.
An ill-considered investigation turns personal for Paula when she begins to get close to Sam, but is Sam’s interest a front to trick Paula? Lies begin accumu-lating. Suddenly, Paula’s not sure who she should protect and who she should fear. As the truth reveals itself, Paula hatches a plan to draw the killer out. The plan’s success would not only allow her to solve the murder, but also give her life a fresh start.

Sleuths
Thirty-year-old Casey Holland likes being a transit security cop. It brings out the best of her compassion, perseverance and courage. After capturing a suspect who’s been groping female bus passengers, Casey learns that her father was mur-dered in his West Vancouver home the previous evening. The trouble is, Casey buried her dad at an open-casket funeral service three years earlier, and he never owned a house in pricey West Van. Convinced that the police are mistaken, Casey accompanies them to the morgue. When she sees the body, her certainty dissolves.
Against her better judgment and the wishes of the investigating detective, Casey starts asking questions about her father and the strange house in West Van, placing her life, and her friends’ lives, in jeopardy. Her search for answers takes her to England, Europe and Vancouver Island, and Casey uncovers a scheme her father was involved in that may have led to his death—which death, though, is still unclear. One thing is certain: Casey’s life is in danger.

Procedural
RCMP Constable Danutia Dranchuk is investigating a mysterious death at Sitting Lady Falls. The evidence she gathers points to three separate stories, leaving her with more questions than answers. Is this murder connected to two earlier killings of Aboriginal women? Are all three the work of the same killer? Some of the details are hitting a little too close to home, and Danutia is forced to examine her friendship with forensics head Corporal Surinder Sharma and his family.
Deftly woven into Danutia’s investigation are the stories of two other char-acters. Parolee Ritchie Taylor fears that the unidentified body from the waterfall is his estranged daughter’s, who was supposed to meet him after his release from prison, but never showed. Awkward busboy Trav can’t seem to help behaving suspiciously.
Author Kay Stewart pulls the threads together in an unexpected and dramatic resolution at Sitting Lady Falls.
Kay Stewart is the co-author of the mystery novel A Deadly Little List (2006), the first in the Danutia Dranchuk series. She taught English at the University of Alberta for twenty years, and has co-authored two textbooks on writing, Essay Writing for Canadian Students and Forms of Writing. Her creative work has appeared in the periodicals Other Voices and NeWest Review, and in the anthologies Eating Apples and Wrestling with the Angel. She lives in Victoria, BC.

Winnipeg, 1914. Tom Macrae is working on his law degree and enjoying the company of his sweetheart, Ellen. When the call to arms comes, both Tom and Ellen are torn from their secure, settled lives in the prairie city. Tom finds himself hunched in the trenches, amid the mud and horror of the Great War, while Ellen faces an uncertain future in Tom’s absence.
His prospects bleak, Tom serves with the Canadian Cavalry Brigade, in the thick of the stalemated struggles on the Western Front. In addition to the soldiers’ comradeship, Tom discovers the strong bonds of trust between the soldiers and their horses. With his own horse as his closest companion, he dodges a hurricane of shells, machine guns and swords, and in the clamour, faces his finest hour.
Inspired by his own father’s story and letters about fighting in Picardy, France, Robert W. Mackay has written a novel that brings to life the great military his-tory and traditions of the Canadian Cavalry.
robert w. Mackay’s interest in military history is deep in his roots. His father was in the Canadian Cavalry in the First World War, and his brother was a career naval officer. Robert served with the Royal Canadian Navy and the British Navy until 1969. He lives with his wife and two sons in Surrey, BC. Soldier of the Horse is his first novel. It’s no secret that Canadians love beer, and in the western provinces, the large number of successful microbreweries continues to prove that distinct beer—high-quality beer—is important to our national pint-lovers. Beer Quest West is for homebrewers and beer aficionados alike: this is your guide to the best of the west.
Alberta and British Columbia are host to over seventy microbreweries, and that number is increasing every year. In this comprehensive field guide, each brewery is fully described, complete with location, the story of the brewery, profiles of the faces behind the brew and of course, their core list of beers. Terminology is explained, and author Jon Stott discusses the grain-to-glass process and the many different beer styles produced in the western provinces. Whether you favour an IPA, a lager, a porter or stout, you’ll find your pint between the pages of Beer Quest West.
Jon C. Stott has enjoyed a long career teaching English at the university level, and occasionally after class, he’d hit the pub with his colleagues for a pint. His other interests include writing about children’s literature and sports. His latest publications include A Book of Tricksters and Ice Warriors. He lives in Edmonton, Alberta.

This third volume in Theo’s Secret Beaches series is a comprehensive guide to dozens of beaches on the shoreline between Campbell River and Qualicum. While some of them are well used by people who live nearby, some are tucked just off the highway and others are hidden at the end of a labyrinth of roads.

In her third book of off-the-beaten-track explorations of western Canada, Liz Bryan travels scenic roads of British Columbia’s Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. From country routes winding through the Fraser Valley to forest roads on Vancouver Island leading to coastal settlements such as Zeballos and Telegraph Cove, these journeys celebrate amazing landscapes and trace the early human history of these regions.
Since some of coastal BC’s interesting places are accessible only by boat, the book also takes readers on excursions along the fjord-riven coast to such places as Friendly Cove and Sechart Whaling Station.
From sandy bays to rocky headlands, quiet farmland to rugged forest, high mountains to rushing rivers, Liz Bryan captures the beauty of British Columbia’s coast.
Liz Bryan is a journalist with an extensive background in magazine editing and publishing. She and her late husband, Jack, co-founded Western Living magazine. Liz lives in Rock Creek, BC.

British Columbia Bizarre is a fascinating and eclectic mix of tales, snippets, historical facts, fancies and misconceptions teased from the history of British Columbia. No one should read this book to obtain a balanced view of the province’s history. It ignores the important people and trends that contributed to BC’s story, and instead favours the often strange, sometimes wonderful, and frequently insignificant events and people that make this province a storyteller’s dream.
Amuse yourself with tales of the brothels, bawdy houses and bagnios that existed in every town, the wild camels of Vancouver Island, communists (well, sort of), duels to the death and goose-races. And if that isn’t enough, fill your boots with a potpourri of editorial feuds, gamblers and professional hangmen, lepers and lynching, and, let’s not forget, angry moose. Sure to delight and surprise, British Columbia Bizarre is a wild safari through provincial history that will confuse your assumptions and tickle your taste for the unusual.

When Native and Métis unrest escalated into the Northwest Rebellion of 1885, settlers in southern Alberta’s cattle country were terrified. Three major First Nation tribes bordered their range, and war seemed certain. In anticipation, 114 men mustered to form the Rocky Mountain Rangers, a volunteer militia charged with ensuring the safety of the open range between the Rocky Mountains and the Cypress Hills.
They were a motley crew, from ex-Mounties and ex-cons to retired, high-ranking military officials and working, ranch-hand cowpokes. Membership qualifications were scant: ability to ride a horse, knowledge of the prairies, and preparedness to die.
This is their story, inextricably linked to the dissensions of the day, rife with skirmishes, corruption, jealousies, rumour, innuendo and gross media sensation-alizing . . . all bound together with what author Gordon Tolton terms “a generous helping of gunpowder.” Tolton’s meticulous research reveals unexplored perspec-tives and little-known details. Be prepared for surprises!
Gordon e. tolton was born and raised in southern Alberta on a mixed farm and ranch. A self-taught historian, he has worked with the Fort Whoop-Up National Historic Site in Lethbridge, the Riders of the Plains Commemorative Troop in Fort Macleod, the Great Canadian Plains Railway Society in Stirling, Alberta, the Lethbridge Historical Society, the Historical Society of Alberta and the United Farmers of Alberta. He is also the author of The Buffalo Legacy, Prairie Warships and Deep Roots, Promising Future.

In the early sixteenth century, the first exploratory ships arrived on the Pacific Coast of North America. These rovers were seeking gold and silver, fur pelts, a safe passage from the Pacific to the Atlantic, and above all, adventure. Though many of the voyagers didn’t survive the dangerous sea crossings or the perils that awaited them on land, their stories live on in Pioneers of the Pacific Coast.
Agnes C. Laut chronicles long-forgotten true stories packed with hazards and surprise. In the 1500s, The Golden Hind breaks into the Pacific Ocean, despite harsh warnings from the Spaniards that it was a “closed sea.” Years later, the Russian explorer Vitus Bering and his crew are stranded on an island when their ship is caught in a storm. In the 17th century, British Captain Vancouver meets with Spanish Captain Quadra at Nootka Sound to decide who owns the Pacific Coast. All these explorers risked their lives to find out whether this perilous land was worthy of settlement.
Agnes C. Laut was born in Huron County, Ontario, in 1871. She became a reporter and editorial writer for the Manitoba Free Press in the 1890s, then a wide-ranging travel writer. Her books include Lords of the North, Heralds of Empire, The Story of the Trapper, Pathfinders of the West, Vikings of the Pacific, Canada at the Crossroads, and The Romance of the Rails. She died in 1936.

“We seemed to have reached that horizon, and the limit of all endurance, to sit with folded hands and listen calmly to the stories of the hills we so longed to see, the hills which had lured and beckoned us for years before this long list of men had ever set foot in the country.” —Mary T.S. Schäffer
The year 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of Old Indian Trails of the Canadian Rockies, one of the best selling books ever published on the mountains of western Canada.
In celebration of this remarkable work of mountain literature, RMB is thrilled to issue a Limited Edition hardcover of Schäffer’s classic. Complete with Janice Sanford Beck’s Foreword and a new selection of archival colour and black and white photos, Old Indian Trails of the Canadian Rockies will most certainly continue to enthral generations of readers, explorers and tourists for another one hundred years.
Mary t.S. Schäffer was an artist, photographer, writer, world traveller and, above all, explorer. She overcame the limited expectations of women at the turn of the 19th century in order to follow her dreams. Although she died in 1937, her story continues to inspire young people, women in particular.

When authors Emerson Sanford and Janice Sanford Beck began backpacking together nearly 20 years ago, they often wondered whose footsteps they were retracing and how today’s Rockies trails came to be there. In the Life of the Trail series, they share their findings with hikers and history buffs, adventurers and armchair travellers.
Life of the Trail 6 details historic routes in the area north of the Columbia Ice-fields and south of the Miette River, bordered on the east by the Athabasca and Sunwapta rivers (today’s highway 93). Along with the mythical Mounts Hooker and Brown, readers will come across historical character David Thompson, A.P. Coleman, Hudson’s Bay Company Governor Sir George Simpson and Group of Seven painters Lawren Harris and A.Y. Jackson.
emerson Sanford, originally from Nova Scotia, first visited the mountains of western Canada in the summer of 1961. Eleven years later, he moved to Alberta and has been hiking ever since. Emerson has solo hiked every historic route and most long trails be-tween Mount Robson and the Kananaskis Lakes—over 3000 km in the past five years! He now lives in Canmore with his wife, Cheryl.
Janice Sanford Beck is the author of the bestselling No Ordinary Woman: The Story of Mary Schäffer Warren (Rocky Mountain Books). She has also written the introduction to the latest edition of Mary Schäffer’s Old Indian Trails of the Canadian Rockies (Rocky Mountain Books) and, with Cheryl Sanford, researched the Mary Schäffer Warren portion of the Glenbow Museum’s permanent exhibit called “Mavericks: An Incorrigible History of Alberta.” Janice lives in Saskatoon with her partner, Shawn, and their children.

the ASPiriNG hiker’S GUide 2
This second volume in The Aspiring Hiker’s Guide series is meant to encourage beginner and intermediate hikers, backpackers and scramblers to explore British Columbia’s backcountry in and around the national parks of Mount Revelstoke, Glacier, Kootenay and Yoho, along with the provincial parks of Mount Assini-boine and Mount Robson, with confidence and excitement. Aspects of venturing into these areas are investigated, including advice on gear, clothing, food and equipment; procedures related to safety and etiquette; and considerations as to physical fitness and first aid.
Routes and trails are detailed with colour photographs and maps, GPS coor-dinates, elevation gain charts, distances, natural landmarks and tips on arriving at the destination safely. Best routes to summits are described in detail to prevent confusion and injury.
As well, the general histories of the trails, routes and naming conventions for some mountains add an element of understanding and intrigue about the experience of the First Peoples and early European explorers who set foot in these beautifully wild areas of western Canada.
Gerry Shea moved to Kamloops from Vancouver at the age of nine, which is when he became enchanted by the nearby hills. It was on a family vacation many years later that he discovered the mountains and began hiking and climbing in his spare time, gathering knowledge and experience that he has since used to help beginning hikers, scramblers and backpackers to trek safely. Gerry lives in Kamloops with his wife and children.

On May 15, 1859, an American settler on San Juan Island shot a pig belonging to the Hudson’s Bay Company. This seemingly insignificant act was the spark that almost set aflame the strangest of many confrontations between Britain and the United States on the northwest coast of North America.
On one side of the border dispute over the strategically located San Juan Islands was Governor James Douglas, determined to protect the interests of the Hudson’s Bay Company and prove the military superiority of Britain. On the other side was General William Selby Harney, spoiling for a fight and believing in America’s manifest destiny to rule the continent.
In this lively account of the conflict that became known as the Pig War, Rosemary Neering traces the events that led to the standoff in the San Juans and brings to life the memorable characters who played leading roles in the drama. The book is an excellent travel companion to anyone visiting the San Juans and the original American and British camps that are open to the public.
rosemary neering is a Victoria-based writer who has written many non-fiction books, including A Traveller’s Guide to Historic British Columbia and Down the Road. When Rosemary isn’t travelling throughout BC looking for new stories, she enjoys time at home with her partner, Joe, and her cat.

It is said that the sparkle from Canadian diamonds mimics the awesome and seductive radiance of the northern lights, and yet, until 1991, no one thought diamonds could even be found in Canada. No one except two geologists who went in search of diamonds and found them on the Lac de Gras Barren Grounds at Point Lake near Yellowknife in Canada’s Arctic.
The discovery by Chuck Fipke and his partner, Dr. Stu Blusson, caused great excitement in international diamond circles. Today, Canada is the world’s third-largest producer, by value, of rough stones. Why? In contrast to gems mined in Africa, Canada’s stones are considered pure “ice,” and they are also “clean”—not tainted by bloodshed and war as they are in such parts of the world as Sierra Leone and Angola.
The discovery of diamonds in Canada’s Arctic is an amazing story of perseverance in the face of immense odds. And the story has a very happy ending.
L.D. Cross is a writer of lifestyle articles and non-fiction books, including Spies in Our Midst, The Quest for the Northwest Passage and The Underground Railroad.

In October 1935, three prairie farm boys embarked on a deadly trail of robbery and murder that stretched across three western Canadian provinces and made newspaper headlines from coast to coast and as far away as Los Angeles. By the end of the spree, seven people were dead, including the fugitives themselves and four law-enforcement officers. For the next 70 years, these Depression-era “farm-boy killers” held the distinction of being the RCMP’s deadliest adversaries.
In Dirty Thirties Desperadoes, Rich Mole recounts the full story of these young men who achieved notoriety as bandits and killers. In telling their tale, and that of the men who fought for their lives near the gates of Banff National Park, he also chronicles the economic, social and political challenges of the Great Depression that turned men on both sides of the law into victims.
rich Mole is a freelance journalist and author who has also been a broadcaster, a com-munications consultant and the president of a Vancouver Island advertising agency.

Cats have fascinated and delighted humankind for millennia. Mysterious and enchanting or affectionate and playful, they immeasurably enrich the lives of their human companions.
In this collection of stories about exceptional cats, Roxanne Willems Snopek explores the loving relationship between cats and their people. A dedicated woman founds an organization to care for feral cats on the cold, hostile streets of Saskatoon. A clever cat becomes a famous columnist, with just a little help from his writer-owner. A stray cat moves into a Vancouver hotel and decides to stay, becoming the subject of a bestselling children’s book. In Ottawa, an elderly man selflessly maintains a long tradition of caring for the cats of Parliament Hill.
From cats that heal and console the ailing to cats that survive only through the love of their caregivers, the stories of these memorable pets will warm the hearts of all animal lovers.
roxanne willems Snopek has been writing professionally for two decades and is the author of 8 books and more than 150 articles. Her non-fiction has appeared in a wide variety of publications, from The Vancouver Sun and Reader’s Digest to newsletters for Duke, Cornell and Tufts universities. The Canadian Oxford Dictionary defines hoax as a “humorous or malicious de-ception,” and hex as “a magic spell.” In Hoaxes and Hexes, Barbara Smith ex-plores these intriguing reflections of human nature, showing our curious desire to believe in the impossible and explain the inexplicable.
Here are tales of swindlers, charlatans and imposters, among them the flam-boyant 19th-century financier known as Lord Gordon-Gordon; David Walsh, author of the horrendous Bre-X gold-mine hoax of the 1990s; and the eccentric Josef Papp, who claimed to have crossed the Atlantic in a homemade subma-rine.
The persistent power of hexes is recorded in stories of cursed places—including a strange haunting in the Cypress Hills and a deadly Lake Superior lighthouse—and weird coincidences, such as the legendary Hollywood hex on Oscar-winning actresses. Whether you believe in the power of hoaxes or hexes, these bizarre stories show them to be a fascinating part of our history.
Barbara Smith is the bestselling author of 25 books. She has taught writing-related courses in schools from elementary to university level and for private industry. Bar-bara lives on Vancouver Island.

The legend of the Lost Lemon Mine is one of the most enduring unsolved mys-teries of the Canadian West. In 1870, so the story goes, two prospectors named Lemon and Blackjack found gold in the rugged mountains of southwestern Al-berta or southeastern British Columbia. Shortly after, Blackjack died at Lemon’s hand. The distraught Lemon left the scene of the murder and never recovered his senses—or his gold. Despite exhaustive searches by treasure seekers and histori-ans, the mine has never been located.
In The Lost Lemon Mine, Ron Stewart revisits this intriguing story and attempts to answer the tantalizing questions posed by the often conflicting evidence. Stewart has meticulously researched the many versions of the story in order to separate folklore from fact and challenges readers to reach their own conclusions.
ron Stewart has written several books on historical and geological topics. His career has involved a series of exploits, including jumping out of helicopters in remote areas of northern BC; diving to a Spanish wreck off the coast of Florida; and encountering bears in the Yukon, mountain lions in the Blue Ridge Mountains and black widow spi-ders and copperhead snakes in North Carolina.

In mid-July 1925, the SS Bayeskimo ran into heavy drift ice at the entrance to Hud-son Strait. The ice carried her north, squeezing the steamer and testing the strength of her rivets. Helpless until the tide changed and the ice moved, the officers and crew could only watch and listen to the ship’s tormented groans. Slowly at first, trickles of freezing water seeped through the steel plates on her bow. The trickles became a flood, and Bayeskimo began to sink.
Bayeskimo was one of hundreds of ships in the Hudson’s Bay Company’s fur-trade fleet. For much of the company’s history, they roamed Hudson Bay, the subarctic and beyond the Arctic Circle, servicing far-flung posts. Some even battled their way around the tip of South America to open up trade on the west coast of North America. During these arduous voyages, many of them came to grief under conditions that would test the mettle of any ship. Here are some of their dramatic stories.

It’s the last ski weekend of the season and a mishmash of snow-enthusiasts is on its way to a remote backwoods cabin. In an odd pilgrimage through the mountains, the townsfolk of Coalton—from the ski bum to the urbanite—embark on a bizarre adventure that walks the line between comedy and tragedy. As the red-necks mount their sleds and the hippies snowshoe through the cedar forest, we see rivals converge for the weekend.
In a blend of mordant humour and heartbreak, Angie Abdou chronicles a day in the life of these industrious few as they attempt to conquer the mountain. In an avalanche of action, Angie Abdou explores the way in which people treat their fellow citizens and the landscape they love.
Angie Abdou is a fiction writer and teacher with a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Calgary. She has published a short story collection called Anything Boys Can Do (2006) and a novel called The Bone Cage (2007). The Bone Cage will be part of CBC’s Canada Reads in February 2011. Jack Tartarus has returned to his family’s house on Crab, a small island off the east coast of Vancouver Island. After mulling it over for ten years, Jack has decided to tear the family house down, board by board, just as his father built it up. He purchases a crowbar and struggles with the first piece of siding. The wrecking bar jams be-tween the old planks; it seems the house is determined to remain.
In a story about families and family history, Jack’s calculated plans for demolition are fired by the memory of his parent, one among the losses he has suffered. Like others who have retreated to Crab Island, he has come to a place where he must make peace with the house in order to construct his future.

Welcome to Poplar Grove, a farming community with three generations of Dutch-Canadians—where a set of dying customs is about to collide with new ways.
The balance is shifting between people comfortable holding hymnals and cleaning cows’ teats and those who are uneasy with traditional expectations. A young woman grapples with contradiction between the pious appearance of her best friend’s family and the bits of reality she hears in her friend’s confi-dences; a woman mourns the loss of her disabled son, but also wishes to end the ritual state of mourning; a girl finds herself stranded on the battlefield between her new-age brother and her Old World parents. With humour and insight, author Patricia Westerhof examines a place where opposing ideologies mingle, and a community struggles to redefine who and what they are.
Patricia westerhof’s work has been published in Room Magazine, The Dalhousie Review, and the anthology Trees Running Backward, and she is the co-author of a textbook called The Writer’s Craft. Patricia lives in Toronto where she teaches English and creative writing. Please visit www.patriciawesterhof.com.

In its early days, Victoria was the commercial powerhouse of British Columbia—its largest city and largest market.
Nancy Oke and Robert Griffin present a richly illustrated history of the bakers, butchers, grocers, coffee makers and other suppliers of food and drink in Victoria’s prosperous early days. They begin in 1843 with the building of the Hudson’s Bay Company fort and show how the face of Victoria changed as it grew from town to city, and how later it stabilized in the shadow of Vancouver’s rising prominence.
Feeding the Family tells the stories of Victoria’s early food and drink suppliers, manufacturers and retailers—the many colourful characters, the businesses that prospered or failed, the inventors, innovators and crooks. It shows how Victoria’s his-tory is unique yet has many similarities with other towns and cities on the west coast.
nancy oke is a research volunteer at the Royal BC Museum. While studying artifacts related to food packaging, she came up with the idea for this book. Dr. robert Griffin has been a history curator at the Royal BC Museum for 30 years. He has written extensively on the forest and mining industries.

Victoria, BC, July 11th 1910.… With red eyes and a body guard of sniffing “ faithfuls” attending us, we start on our long trip abroad.…
So begins Emily Carr’s memoirs of her trip to England with her sister Alice. They travel across Canada by rail to board an ocean liner in Quebec City, meeting interesting characters and having many adventures along the way. They hike in “gloriously cool and beautiful” Glacier House, and encounter porcupines and wasps in otherwise “heavenly” Lake Louise.
They carry on to the “wonderful little town” of Medicine Hat, then Winnipeg, Montreal and “wonderful historic old” Quebec City, where they prepare for boarding the Empress of Ireland for Liverpool.
Sister and I presents Emily Carr’s whimsical account of her trip across Canada, written and illustrated in her own hand, directly from Carr’s original notebook. This one-of-a-kind book is introduced by Kathryn Bridge, who places it in context with Carr’s life and works.
emily Carr (1871–1945) is one of Canada’s best-known painters and an award-winning author of several books. Archivist and historian Kathryn Bridge has brought two other Carr manuscripts to press—Wild Flowers (2006) and Studio Billie’s Calendar (2010).

In April 1997, Matt Jackson quit his job, strode to the edge of the Trans-Canada Highway near Lake Louise, Alberta, and began the journey of a lifetime. His plan? To spend several months hitchhik-ing across Canada, meeting Canadians from every walk of life and experiencing firsthand our country’s breathtaking landscape. The trip was supposed to take three months—maybe four, tops.
But the road has a mind of its own, as Jackson soon discovered, and he didn’t arrive in Newfoundland until three-and-a-half years later.
A graduate of Wilfrid Laurier’s Business Administration program, Matt Jackson was lured away from the corporate world by the thrill of adventure journalism shortly after he spent a year skiing and climbing in the Canadian Rockies. He is now a magazine writer, photojournalist and professional speaker specializing in travel, adventure, science, conservation and human interest stories.

Vancouver Island is one of the “birdiest” places in all of Canada. With over 350 species known to have been found on the island, there are always new birds to discover and enjoy. What makes Vancouver Island such a great place to watch birds is that they are abundant here year round. Whether it is the migrating birds in the spring or fall, the summer breeding residents, or the dozens of species of waterfowl that seek food and shelter on Vancouver Island each winter—there is always something to look for.
Glenn Bartley is a professional nature photographer from Victoria, British Columbia, on Canada’s West Coast. He focuses on capturing intimate portraits of birds in their natural surroundings. This is Glenn’s fifth book and is the product of nearly four years of photographing the birds of Vancouver Island. Glenn’s work is regularly published in nature books and magazines throughout North America, including Birder’s World, Birding, Bird Watchers Digest, Canadian Wildlife, Birdwatch Canada and Nature Photographer.

A Photographic Journey
Glenn Bartley
Whether it’s your first trip or your hundredth crossing aboard a BC ferry on the spectacular trip between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, you will find yourself asking, “What’s that island? Why are those birds here? What’s that lighthouse?” This guide will answer many of those questions. What’s That Island? is the only book of its kind for this busy ferry crossing.
Bruce whittington took his first trip on a BC Ferry in 1965. He is a free-lance writer and photographer, and works as an onboard naturalist on cruises along the west coast. What’s That Island? is his third book, and the second published by Stray Feathers Press.

Build a life-size horse! Mural Mosaic brings together hundreds of individual paintings created by hundreds of artists into one unifying image. Each painting reflects an individual’s unique creativity and style. When a painting is completed it is carefully placed in sequence within the mural to assemble one masterpiece. This book takes 238 equine paintings by over 170 artists and creates one master-piece mural called, The Horse Gift. When completed, the final mural measures 67” x 82”. Great as a family or classroom art project. Fun for all ages.
Lewis Lavoie is a renowned children’s illustrator. He has gained international attention for his live performance art creations which he has showcased in front of crowds of thousands.

Excellent resources for parents and teachers, Jim Challenger’s fable-like tales illustrate the value of family, friendship and the lessons of nature.
“Challenger’s prose bears a deliberate resemblance to First Nations oral traditions: humans and nature interact freely, and both are capable of folly, repentance, and wisdom. In his artwork, Challenger also embraces West Coast Aboriginal culture by portraying his characters in exquisite Haida-style prints. Highly recommended.”
