A close corporation with Royal Arctic Line AS in
Denmark led to an exiting pilot project, which took
place in Greenland this spring, when it was agreed
to install two thermal HERNIS camera stations
onboard the M/S Mary Arctica for ice detection.
In order for this pilot project to become a success,
the camera stations would have to detect the top of
the growlers at a restricted view and at a longer
range than the human eye is capable of.
The two thermal camera stations were installed
onboard the M/S Mary Arctica, when it was docked
in Poland March 2006. When the ship laid out for
her journey to Greenland in April, HERNIS Service
Engineer Reidar Olsbu went onboard the ship in
Nuuk for maintenance and testing of the camera
stations for ice detection.
On his trip from the 20th – 26th April 2006, he
logged the results of the ice detection and found
that the project was a success. “This project has
been a useful experience for HERNIS”, says Reidar
Olsbu. “This is certainly new waters for HERNIS
and we are very exited to be a part of this project
with Royal Arctic Line, who have been very
cooperative and helpful during the entire process.
We were able to test our equipment under extreme
conditions and the outcome has been very useful”.
Royal Arctic Line concludes that they had good
experience with the cameras during favourable
weather conditions, where they were able to detect
the top of the growlers in the sea at a longer range
than without the camera. “We are looking forward
to seeing the development from HERNIS in this
area, and to improve the range estimation and
prevent icing of the equipment” says Allan Idd
Jensen, Superintendent with Royal Arctic Line in
Denmark.
In the middle of June, the camera stations were
dismounted from the ship and brought back to
HERNIS, who will continue to develop and expand
their product range for handling the challenging
tasks of ice detection.

Gasco Ruwais NGL 3 - Expansion project
Snamprogetti SpA in Italy has awarded HERNIS a
major contract for delivery of a large CCTV system
to the GASCO NGL Train 3 Project at Ruwais in
UAE. The order for HERNIS involves the latest
CCTV technology, including an advanced control
system.
HERNIS also delivered the CCTV system for the
existing plant. The new equipment will be
integrated to the HERNIS 400 control system
already in operation. The control system will be
upgraded to incorporate redundancy which will
result in an even more reliable performance. In
addition a large number of new camera stations will
be installed for surveillance covering the process,
perimeter and jetty areas. In total the system will
serve different operators assisting them to improve
the overall plant safety and security.
The third NGL train will process NGL transported
via a new pipeline from OGD-III and AGD-II,
supplemented by a new LPG stream from the
adjacent refinery, owned by TAKREER.
The NGL will be processed in a 24,400 tonnes per
day fractionation and treatment train to produce
ethane, liquefied propane and butane and pentane
and heavier hydrocarbons. In addition, the project
included four 83,600m3 liquefied petroleum gas
storage tanks, a single 76,000m3 pentane storage
tank and a two-berth extension to the export jetty.
The project is expected to be completed by the end
of the first quarter 2008.
The owner is ABU DHABI GAS INDUSTRIES
LTD. (GASCO), which is the operating company
in Abu Dhabi responsible for processing associate
and non-associate gas from onshore oil production.
HERNIS have recently signed two new contracts
with Jurong Shipyard Pte. Ltd. to deliver the CCTV
System for Petromena’s PetroRig I and II Semi-
submersible Rigs. Jurong Shipyard will build the 6th
generation ultra-deepwater semi-submersible
drilling rig based on the Friede & Goldman (F&G)
Ex-D design.
The semi-submersible rigs are capable of operating
in 3,000 meters water depth under harsh
environmental drilling conditions. It is suitable for
operation in most of the world’s known challenging
deepwater arena. The rig is engineered for stability
and versatility with operational displacement of
43,400 metric tons at 17 meters draft and 46,750
metric tons at 20 meters draft.
HERNIS will be delivering the ever reliable Control
System and Equipment, consisting of HERNIS 400

The market for the storage of oil and chemical
products in south-east Asia has grown rapidly
during the past decades. On the Southern Islands of
Singapore a large (petro)chemical industrial area is
developed including storage tank and the other
associated infrastructure such as jetties. Just recently,
Tankstore Ltd. Singapore had expansion project for
Petroleum Storage in Pulau Busing. HERNIS has
been awarded to supply the CCTV System and
Equipment to replace the existing equipment on the
tank farms and jetty areas.
HERNIS will supply the well known HERNIS 400
Control System coupled with several Ex286 and
PT9 Camera Stations and Digital Video Recording
facility.
Owner has commented that they will consider
HERNIS again for new installations in the future.
Our German agent Marine & Offshore Equipment recently opened up a
Demo Room at their premises in Reinbek close to Hamburg. During the last
10 years Germany has become a strong and stable market for HERNIS CCTV
systems and it was therefore agreed to offer German customers the chance to
put hands on HERNIS equipment locally.
Various camera stations, monitors and keyboards as well as a HERNIS 400
system can be tested. Also operational software HWIN and Seatouch are part
of the system. This gives the customer the chance to compare ethernet based
technology with analogue technology under realistic circumstances.
Please do not hesitate to contact HERNIS or our local agent Marine Offshore
Equipment in case you would like to stop by. You will be most welcome.

TECHNICAL CORNER
ZONESOnce the nature of the potential hazard in the
form of an explosive atmosphere has been defined,
the likelihood of the hazard existing needs to be
considered. Clearly, there will be an infinite range
of possibilities from definitely always present´ to
`perhaps present for very short periods`. However,
three distinctions are recognised. The term zone is
used to describe the likelihood of an explosive
atmosphere existing at any given time.
Zones are defined by the IEC as follows:
Zone 0 Areas where an explosive atmosphere
occurs constantly or over long periods.
Zone 1 Areas where an explosive atmosphere
occurs occasionally under normal
operating conditions.
Zone 2 Areas where an explosive atmosphere
occurs only exceptionally, and then only
for short periods.
IECEx Scheme ObjectiveThe objective of the IECEx Scheme is to facilitate
international trade in equipment and services for
use in explosive atmospheres, while maintaining the
required level of safety:
• reduced testing and certification costs to
manufacturer
• reduced time to market
• international confidence in the product
assessment process
• one international database listing
• maintaining International Confidence in
equipment and services covered by IECEx
Certification
HERNIS has received the IEC Ex Certificate
