This is not the end of roadworks though, warned the mayor. The outdated storm-water system will re- quire more work on Main Road in the future, to the tune of R1,9 million. There is currently no budget for this project.

Motorists fedupwith roadworksdelayHEDDAMITTNERANDANNETTETHERON

Frustration is mounting amongmotorists whomake regular useof the R320 between Hermanusand Caledon to get to work and/or home.

“The road is in a terrible condi-tion and there’s just nothing hap-pening,” says Carolyn Martin, co-owner of Creation Wines in theHemel-en-Aarde Ridge. “We havealmost givenuphopeaswewere ex-pecting to see project engineers, la-bourers and equipment on the roadby now.”Following a closed tender proc-

ess, the Department of Transportand Public Works (DTPW) signed anew contract with Brink & HeathCivils on 29Januaryafter theprevi-ous contractor, Vusela Construc-tion, went into liquidation. At the time, senior operations

manager of the department, AntonNell, gave his assurance that con-struction will resume within thenext week or two. However, Brink&Heath’s projectmanager KenwynStreet, says motorists will have tobe patient for at least another twoweeks even though they have beenon the site since Monday 10 Febru-ary.“WehavemovedintoVusela’ssite

offices and are currently assessingthe condition of the road with ourengineers. We need to establishwhat has been done and what not,and the standard to which the workhas been done.“There has also been extensive

storm damage to parts of the roadsince Vusela ceased construction, and this forms part of a separate in-surance claim. The assessors havebeen on site with the engineers toquantify the damage, which willhave to be repaired before we cancontinue with the project.”AvrilAdams, principalofDiepgat

Primary, says the condition of theroad is atrocious. “My car rattlesand shakes and I am worried aboutthe impact the condition of the roadhas onmy suspension and steering.Lately there have been large rockslying in the road, resulting in mehaving to move over to the otherside of the road in order not to drive

over them and shred my tyres.“What upsets me even more is

that nobody informed us about thedelay. I am totally fed up. Beforeroad works commenced, the roadwas in a far better condition thanit is now.”Dieter Odendaal, a resident of the

area, says the roadworks, and espe-cially the delays, have had a nega-tive impact on the local economy.“Due to the bad surface of the roadunder construction and the lack ofmaintenance, many people had todig deep in their pockets to keeptheir cars on the road.” Odendaalsays the road has also become dan-gerous and there have been a

number of accidents lately due tothe lack of upkeep.Martin confirms that the mainte-

nance of the road is “appalling”.“Therehavebeenquite a fewacci-

dents – just lastweeka carwith fourmembers of our harvest crew hit arock in the road, lost control of thevehicleandskiddedoff the road intoa ditch.“We’ve also had to go and assist

motorists who were on their way toour tasting venue when their vehi-cles broke down,” Martin says.“Several clients have said they

willnotdobusinesswithusuntil theroad is fixed, and the road is costingmy employees dearly in terms of

maintenance,breakdownsandacci-dents.”Martin adds that the road ismuch

better since it was scraped lastweek. “The road is passable andbearable – if it is maintained,” shesays.Martin feels that the DTPW over-

promises and under-delivers. “Weneed better communication and arealistic time line so that we knowwhat to expect,” she says.Odendaal agrees. “As a resident,

we were all looking forward to thetarring of the road as a positive fac-tor in our lives, but the lack of com-munication from the departmenthas been disappointing and we feelleft in the dark,” he says.“We look forward to the road be-

ing completed as soon as possibleand hopefully we won’t encounteranother delay.”According to Street, once the

process of inspection and assess-ment has been completed, the firstpriority will be to make the roadsafe.“Wewill start by repairing theby-

passes to make the road safer andmore convenient for motorists dur-ing the remaining construction pe-riod.This isa15-monthcontractandwith all the delays sinceVuselawasplaced under liquidation, the com-pletion date has moved forwardfrom September 2014 to May 2015.”Anton Nell, senior operations

manager of DTPW, says they areaware of the bad condition of theroad but still believe that motoristscan adapt as the road is not inacces-sible and the situation is only tem-porary.

Beach fun turns dangerousHEDDA MITTNER

A reader alerted the HermanusTimes about an incident at On-rus beach on Sunday morningthat could easily havehad tragicconsequences. The reader says childrenwere

playing in the estuary and usedtheir beach spades to dig atrench in the sand leading fromthe mouth of the estuary to thesea.“It was all innocent playful

kids’ stuff, the weather wasgreat, idealbeachconditions.Noone could have foreseen the dan-ger that was about to unfold,”writes the reader. It appears thatwhat started as

a small trench suddenlygrew in-to somethingmuchbigger as thewater from the estuary startedrushing through the breach.Aresidentwhowasalsoon the

beach that morning, Eben Vil-joen, says as the breach wid-ened, the water gained momen-tumandturned intoaragingriv-er with rapids. He says therewere adults present who helpedthe children to dig the trench.“At first thekidsenjoyedit tre-

mendously and took rides downthe ‘river’ on their boards and li-los, but it soon became extreme-ly dangerous.“The people on the beach on

the other side of the river couldnot get across. I saw one elderlyladytryingandgetting into trou-ble halfway through. She had tobe helped along by bystanderswho went to her aid.”The reader also says the flow

became more powerful by theminute. He sawayoungboywhowas being swept away when hismother jumped in to save him.“They both then got into furtherdifficulties, but luckily therewas another parent in the rapidthat lifted them both to safety.“Bynow this rapidhad turned

into a beast of a torrent, gather-ingstrengthasmoreof thebeachsandwas eroded, creating awid-ermouth for a greater volume ofwater to flowout of the estuary.”The reader says members of

the public should be aware thatthis is not only irresponsible butunlawful. “Not so long ago somefellows were fined a substantialamount fordoing the sameat theKlein River mouth,” he warns.

It appears that funseekers at Onrus beach on Sunday morning inadvertently caused an artificial breach of the estuary when theydug a trench in the sand. PHOTO: BAREND LUUS

Warn public about hazardous environmentYour recent newspaper edition (6 Febru-ary) was brought to my attention and Ithought it worthwhile writing to you inresponse to the headline article entitled:“Publickept inthedarkaboutpollutedestu-ary”On 3 January my family and I were

swimming in and around the rivermouth– along with many other holiday makers(in essence taking up floating devices ofsorts and riding out the part of the rivermouthonthem).Whilst thiswasgreat fun,we would certainly not have done this ifthere was a sign up saying that the estu-ary/river was polluted.Mydaughter (aged 4 years old) endedup

in hospital for the night of 4 January aftervomiting and experiencing diarrhoea(booked into hospital by the doctor on callat the Emergency ward, as she was dehy-drated after the continuous vomiting etc).At the time wewere convinced that it wassomething related to thewater in the rivermouth, but were unable to pin anythingdown other than the pharmacist at Clicks

in Hermanus who mentioned that anumber of other people had come in to col-lect medication related to similar symp-toms, and asked if we had been swimmingin the river mouth. The purpose of this mail is merely to

voice my disappointment about the factthat there were people who knew aboutthese sewerage spills but decided that itwas in the best interests not to erectwarn-ing signs. As a father, it is extremely wor-rying when your 4-year-old daughter ishospitalisedforaperiodof time–certainlyenough to ruin a couple of days of yourholiday.Thebills fromtheHermanusMediclinic

were not insignificant on their own, butof minor importance when compared tothe health of a family member. Spilt milknow, but in future we should be able totrust the authorities to let us know whenthe environment is potentially hazardous(with unseen “hazards”) through the useof temporary warning signs.

The Malls – a window ofopportunity for the CBDDuring the recent era of property boom anumber of professional people invested inolder houses in and around the HermanusCBD for business use, adding to the parkingchoke.Other reasons ie tin town and wide-spread

retail stores also lead to the creationand frus-tration in hunting for parking, which helpedto reduce the number of shoppers, includingsomeof the elderlywhoavoid shopping in theCBD.The CBD is old-school shopping which has

also become the demise of many small townsin SA with layouts not functional.HermanusCBD fortunatelyhas the sea and

whales which one has direct contact with, which other towns cannot offer and that isenough to keep the CBD alive.Using the average income statistics of Mr

Piet Louw (HT 13/2/2014), the majority fami-lies living in outer Hermanus will spend upto 10% of their income on fuel and parkingto shop in the CBD.Taking the fuel and parking expenses into

consideration, then the costs of crossing themountain monthly to shop at the malls therehave a minimal difference. The malls will relieve the pressure in the

CBDand should some retailersmoveon, thenbusiness Hermanus should see this as a win-dow of opportunity to realign the CBD bykeeping the old-school look while taking thetransition of online shopping into considera-tion and creating a proper website for retail-ers in the CBD.Business Hermanus – it will not help the

CBD to challenge competitors. Be creative byremoving the ongoing problems from theCBD and business certainly will improve.

Twoboomslange comevisiting

On a recent hot and sunny day twoboomslange were seen in our garden in Voël-klip. The first was seen peering through mysecretary’s office window from the surround-ing ivy, giving her the fright of her life.A snake removal expert (André Neethling:

082 425 0456) was called and spent the betterpart of the day following the two boomslange,a male and female, between the hedges andtrees on the boundary of our property.Eventuallyhemanaged tocatchandbag the

large brown female (approx. 1,5 m) on the flatroofof theoffice, tobereleasedlater– farawayfrom residential areas. The next morning the slender black male

came back to the rooftop of the office andsniffed around with his forked tongue for hisabsentmate – it was very touching to see andfittingbehaviourbeing so close toValentine’sDay!Eventually he slithered off into the fynbos

before Neethling had time to return. Sadly,

a week later, a dead boomslang already in astateofdecaywasseenonthelawnofourprop-erty, presumablykilledbyamongooseorbirdof prey. Mongooses and a few other animalsare immune to boomslang venom, which con-tains a potent but relatively slow-actinghaemotoxin interfering with the blood clot-ting mechanism of its victims. However boomslangs are very shy and

stealthywithunprovokedbitesonhumansbe-ing extremely rare – in a decade of us livinginHermanuswehaveneverseenaboomslangdespite their likely presence in our bushesand trees for many years.Keepa lookout for these beautiful andhard-

to-spot creatures – with keen eyesight andstereoscopicvision theywill typically seeyoufirst and slither out of sight. At present National Geographic Wild is

A pleasant weekend lies ahead, with mild sunny days, almostnowind and only about 1 mmof light rain expected on Sundayand Monday. It is the best time for gardening – planting andsowing, fertilising and watering.

The first Walker Bay Active outdoorsport event, presented by the Sea-and-Sand Institute, is scheduled to takeplace from 30 April to 3 May.

The logistics, safety and other arrange-ments were discussed during an openmeeting on Thursday 6 February at theWhale Coast Hotel.Parking arrangements were clarified

with traffic authorities and Sea-and-Sandwill take care of all the safety measures.According to the founder of Sea-and-

Sand, Sparks Estherhuizen, this projectmust be seenaspromoting sport and recre-ation in the Overstrand rather than as acompetition.“Thereforewe decided to award the first

30 finishers with gold founder’s medals. Itis not about winning or losing or whocomes first or second, but rather who hadthe guts and endurance to take part andfinish the race.“With arts festivals across the country

all towns need to import their artists, butwith an outdoor sport festival like this wehave all the resources right here in theOverstrand,” he says.

WeesbewusvanverhuringslaggateHEDDA MITTNER

Of hulle betaal diemaandeliksehuuren/ofdiemunisipale reke-ninglaat.

SPRINGBOK FACTORY WHAT IT TAKES TO BE ABOK BY LIZ MCGREGOR: The original idea for thisbook was for McGregor to follow Jean de Villiersand the rest of the Springbok team through the 2011World Cup – their preparation, logistics, and a daytoday diary leading up to their expected victory. At theend of the tour she sat with a 45 000 word manuscript, hoards of photos documenting every step, butthere was no victory and who would want to readabout a failed campaign? McGregor explored another avenue – an investigation of the Springbok production line, i.e. what it takes to be a Bok. She focusesprimarily on the Du Plessis brothers (Bismarck andJannie), Jean de Villiers and Schalk Burger. Their parents, schooling (the most productive is Grey Collegein Bloemfontein, with 22 Boks; second is Paarl Gymnasium with 10) and sporting history, with interviewswith their moms, teachers, coaches and lecturers. Thisis great reading and gives good insight into the nature and nurture that turns a boy into a Bok. It is followed by chapters on Logistics (what it takes to organise a tour); Maintenance (keeping the Bok andtheir bodies in shape and fit to play), The wives andgirlfriends; The Black Bok; The Big Bok Loss; TheOwners; and The Banker. In my opinion the bookstarts off at a fast pace and then fluctuates withhighs and lows towards the end, but rugby afficianados (and not just a rugby fan, like me) will no doubtvalue some of the information more. There are lots ofphotos. John Dobson, WP coach, says this is the mostinsightful book on Bokrugby he has ever read, andNick Mallett describes it as a mustread for true rugby supporters. TAX, LIES AND RED TAPE BY DAWIEROODT WITH LINETTE RETIEF: Find out why:• It’s wrong to blame Wall Street bankers forthe global financial crisis. • The rhinohorntrade should be legalised. • Exempting anything from VAT is a bad idea, even for thepoor. • Job creation is a fruitless exercise.• South Africa’s problem is not poverty. Tax,Lies and Red Tape is an easytounderstand, very opinionated book about economics.Roodt argues that economics is not aboutnumbers, graphs and statistics; it is aboutpeople, and how they react to incentives.Unfortunately, he says, our politicians seemto have forgotten this. Using simple conceptsand thoughtprovoking anecdotes, he explains how ‘the market’ evolved with humanity, what was wrong with communism, whatthe global financial crisis is really about, theways in which the state spends your money (and ways it actually should), how tax iscollected, how money and inflation reallywork, the ins and outs of trade, and the upsand downs of labour. In the process, Roodtdebunks politically correct thinking and current government policy, and suggests alternatives for a more effective system.

Students, who sign up after matric will, for a periodof six months, attend lectures in entrepre-neurship and business management forthree days a week. They will receive indi-vidual and groupmentorship and endwitha draft of each one’s “life plan”.This approach is intended to provide

matriculants with a constructive alterna-tive to the conventional gap year customwhich involves spending a year overseasdoing odd jobs such as working in bars oras security guards, whichmore likely thannotwill have no bearing on their future ca-reer plans and aspirations. What really struck me while digesting

this suggestion and Mouton’s other chal-lenging comments in conjunction withthought-provoking arguments containedin J P Landman’s recent book, The LongView, was how critically importantopportunities and choices are. sporting talent, musical genius andmodel-like looks. Others are even born wealthy –asanaside,wealthandsuccessarenotsyn-onymous. Many successful people ascribemost of their achievements to being at theright place at the right time.Be that as it may, these are examples of

special opportunities arising in the livesof specially endowed people.

Quite ordinary people should be awarethough that opportunities constantly passtheir way which, if grasped, can bringabout life-changing results. These often go a-begging because of a no-

tion that opportunities are for only the se-lected blessed ones. Quite the contrary.Let’s look at two examples that will proba-bly be relevant to most readers. On 7 May eligible South Africans will

have the opportunity to vote for a new gov-ernment.Voters who are satisfied about how our

country and its respective provinces arerun, will see this as an opportunity to keeptheir representatives in the saddle. To thosewhohavehad enoughof corrup-

tion, poor service delivery, a pathetic andstill deteriorating educational system anduseless municipalities, the electionpresents ahugeopportunity (whichwill begone by 8 May) to make their proverbialvoices heard. The general elections’ outcome will af-

fect everyone’s life – in particular his/herpocket–asalmosteverythinggovernmentsdo has a direct financial impact on all citi-zens.Ratesandtaxesmaychange–socouldthe way your hard earned tax rands arespent or misspent by a new government.Theextent of social grantswill be reconsid-ered.Howeffectiveanewparliamentaryoppo-

sitionwill be inanew legislaturewill influ-ence life inmanywayswithnewapproach-es, laws, taxes and interventions.Grasp the opportunity to cast your vote

and influence your future.Pertinent to the youth’s yearning for a

better life – materially and in many otheraspects – the opportunity presents itself tobuild long-term financial success by sys-tematicanddedicatedsaving/ investment.Onceyouembarkonthisroad, theoppor-

tunity for spectacular long-term returnscan be exploited by engaging the power –or rather, magic – of compounded growthof returns. To accumulate wealth, you need time on

your side. Start early.Yes, it is difficult for most young people

to save and many are not prepared to com-mit to the discipline of ongoing saving butthe long-term rewards will outstrip what-ever the sacrifice is perceived to be.Parents should understand this, should

encourage their children not to spend eve-rycentandassist theminmakingasavingsculture their own. Many older people realise too late that

they never grasped this opportunity. Andnow they cannot turn back the clock to en-sure financial peace of mind. Don’t let thisopportunity pass you by.Mouton and Landman urge South-Afri-

cans to be positive about our country’s fu-ture and to be involved in carving a betterfuture for us all.Choose to be involved. Face the challeng-

es. Grasp the opportunities offered by our“very strange society”.I endorse Landman’s comment: “To live

inSouthAfrica, youmust learn to livewiththe ambiguity of the place. If you can’t copewith ambiguity, I recommend Canada orAustralia.”Note: This article does not constitute ex-

STEVE JOBS BY WALTERISAACSON: “The peoplewho are crazy enough tothink they can change theworld are the ones whodo.” The biography onSteve Jobs starts with thestory of an ordinarychildhood. Steve wasadopted and knew thisfrom an early stage. Hisbiological mother requiredhis adoptive parents topledge that Steve wouldreceive a college education – a promise theykept. Steve’s adoptive father, Paul, fixed up oldcars and through this pastime he taught Steve negotiating skills and a focus on sleek design and precision work. At school it became apparent that Steve was intellectually superior to his peers and theschool proposed that he skip two grades. Steve’s parents decidedthat he should only skip one grade, which meant that he was withchildren one year older. As a junior he was sometimes bullied atschool. It was also at school where Steve met Woz – StephenWozniak – an electronic genius. This meeting set Steve on thecourse that would determine his future and legacy. Woz and Stevebecame business partners and their different strengths helped toconceive Apple. Steve’s parents kept their promise and sent him tocollege where he led a bohemian existence, became bored, anddropped out. After college he worked parttime and later startedworking at Atari. It was only a matter of time before Apple wasborn. The founding and management of Apple should be a business studies prescribed book as all the lessons of good and badmanagement are intertwined as you turn the pages. The book reflects constantly on Steve’s brilliance as well as his complex personality and strained relationships. Reality Distortion Field (RDF) isa term coined by an Apple employee to describe Steve, as hecould distort an audience’s sense of proportion and scale of difficulties, and make them believe that the task at hand was possible.Steve’s lovehate relationship with the other “tech titan” Bill Gates,is just another one of many stories captured in one book – emotional stories about an adopted son who deals with abandonment, stories of brilliance, electronic development, design, management, relationships… All these are contained in this biography that isjust short on 600 pages on the life of a genius who enjoyed making things simpler yet aesthetically more pleasing. In 2011 recurring cancer caused the end of Steve’s life but he will always beremembered – especially by the loyal customers of Apple products.

THE LONG VIEW GETTING BEYOND THE DRAMA OF SOUTHAFRICA’S HEADLINES BY JPLANDMAN: Avery sexy littleeconomics guidebook focusing onthe questions thatordinary SouthAfricans contemplate regularly. The layout anddesign of thebook is interestingand gives goodPR to what couldotherwise be mindnumbing economicquestions. It is aneasy read withonly the page onthe right printedwith text. On theleft side there arepictures or illustrations to soften the unavoidable theoretical approach to the future of our country. One could randomly openthe book and start reading sections on their own as there isplenty to learn from the many facts and stats discussed in layman’s terms. Not the book for seasoned academics or economists but very informative for the average person wanting tounderstand South Africa and its economic situation better. Thebook breaks complicated issues down to a practical level andmakes you want to read more. One section concludes withSouth Africans’ ability to live with ambiguity and advises thatone should simultaneously keep the contrasting pictures that wesee on the news in mind. This is not easy. To live in South Africayou need to deal with the ambiguity that surrounds us. Thebook concludes that more things are going right than wrongand this does indeed give a sense of hope as the author wishedit would. The author is a selfemployed political and trend analyst. His focus areas are trends in politics, economics, social capital and the interplay of demographics and economic growth. Hehas an undergraduate and law degree as well as a MPhil in Future Studies from Stellenbosch University. He also studied Economics at Harvard. In 2009 he completed a course at OxfordUniversity on the economies of the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia,India & China). REVIEW BY FRIEDA LLOYD

Birkenhead Commemorationth nd

25 – 26 February 2014 (162 Anniversary)

HMBirkenhead asurvivor’s taleHMSteamerBirkenheadwas a 1 400 ton Brit-ish iron paddle frigate built in 1845 and con-verted into a troop carrier in 1848.

While transporting troops from Simon’sTown to East London for the Frontier War,shestruckarockoffDangerPointnearGans-baai, and sank.

Legend has it that she was carrying£240 000 in gold (about 3 tons) as part of a mil-itary pay packet.

A salvage group called Depth RecoveryUnit, led by Dr Allan Kayle, salvaged a fewhundred gold coins in the mid and late 1980s.

A Survivor’s TaleThis is an extract of a transcript of a letter

foundinthearchivesofHiltonCollege,Natalin 1994 by Dr Allan Kayle, written by oneof the HM Birkenhead survivors, EnsignG.A. Lucas, 73rd Regiment.

“This is as near as possible a copy of myletter to my father, written as soon as I wassufficiently strong to write. It is only a lad’sletter – I was not 20 then...

(signed) G.A. Lucas.17 July 1905.”Lucas later settled in Natal and became a

magistrate and chief magistrate of Durban.

“Cape Town,20th March 1852I hope you received all the letters I wrote

on my passage out. From the time we left Cork, I wrote from

every place we touched at,[1] but above all I

trust you got the one written from Smails farmon the Kleyne River, [2] as soon as you wouldhave heard of the loss of the Birkenhead. I wasunable there to write much, and could not givemany particulars of the shipwreck, but I shallnow in this letter.

We left Simons Bay[3] from whence I wroteto —/ at 6 oc PM – the 25th February, and gotwell out of the bay before dark.

I turned in at 9 oc as I was to have the watchondeck from4 to 8 oc.Wewere thengoingabout8½ knots an hour with two boilers. I slept likea top, and know nothing of what happened upto the time I was awakened by three distinctshocks. I started up, and immediately it struckme that we were on a rock.

I went on deck,[4] the first person I met at thetop of the companion ladder was the ship’s car-penter[5] – I asked him what was the matter? His answer was not very consoling: “We aresinking fast, we have got 13 feet of water in theship forward.”

I then went below and dressed. When I cameon deck again I sawCaptain Salmon giving or-ders from the Poop [deck]. The shipwas rollingat this time somuch that it waswith great diffi-culty any body could stand.

We had 9 horses on board; they were kickingand plunging furiously, several had fallendown.

Just at this time one of the engineers cameup to the poop and reported that water had putthe fires out in the Engine Room... ”

the last few years has beentime management,” says Ter-essa. “I gradually came to therealisation that I simply can’tdo everything and I had tomake a choice. I can nowthrow myself heart and soul intothis new venture and I am lookingforward to working from home sur-rounded by my family.”Teressa says she’s always been

passionate about tourism. “It’s nev-er been just a job to me; it’s a life-style,” she says.Teressa’s latest challenge isoneof

LET’S TALK ORCHIDS: Ground orchids werein an astounding profusion in the mountainsof Hermanus during the past summermonths. Regular hikers most probably wererewarded with a colourful parade of Disas,Satyriums, Pterygodiums and many other orchids each blooming at their expected times. To complement this amazing season, the Botanical Society has invited William Liltved, author of The Cape Orchids, to share hispassion for orchids at their speaker’s eveningon 21 February at 19:00 at the FernkloofHall. In his book, the relationship betweenCape orchids and fire is explained, with special reference to orchid lifehistory strategiesthat enable survival in fireprone vegetation. He will discuss the pollination of Cape orchids by butterflies, moths, flies, bees, beetlesand birds, covering previously unknown pollinators, as well as deception and mimicryby the orchids, selfpollination and naturalhybridisation. With fynbos on our doorstepand the ravages of the fire fresh in ourmemories, the talk by this knowledgeable, worldrenowned botanist, historian and photographer promises to be a highlight not tobe missed. roete na Sossusvlei geneem het deur Helme-ringhausen, het ons afgedraai op die D707, ’ntaamlike nagmerrie.

So ry ons verder deurNamibië, sonder enige

probleme.

Nee. Be-
