Heritage Oshawa
Heritage Oshawa is the municipal heritage advisory committee to Council that was established in 1995 by By-law 59-95. The Committee is made up of members appointed by Council to assist and provide advice to Council on matters relating to the designation and preservation of heritage properties as well as to implement programs and activities that increase the public’s awareness and knowledge of heritage conservation and other cultural heritage matters within the City of Oshawa.
Heritage Designation
Heritage designation is a process established in the Ontario Heritage Act to recognize and protect properties of cultural heritage value or interest. The owner of a designated heritage property must apply to Council and receive consent in writing to the alteration or demolition of the building.
Owners of designated heritage properties within the City of Oshawa may be eligible for a Heritage Property Tax Rebate.
Register
The City of Oshawa Register of Properties of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest (the ‘Register’) is a list of properties that have been formally recognized by Council, pursuant to Section 27 of the Ontario Heritage Act, as being properties within the City of Oshawa having cultural heritage value or interest.
The Register includes designated and non-designated properties.
The owner of a non-designated property listed on the Register must give Council notice of at least 60 days of its intent to demolish a structure on the property.
Heritage Oshawa Designation Plaque
Properties that are designated by by-law pursuant to the Ontario Heritage Act are honoured by Heritage Oshawa through the granting and installation of an oval-shaped, grey slate plaque with gold lettering which identifies the property as a designated heritage property.

Heritage Oshawa Historic Building Plaque
Properties within the City of Oshawa that are considered to have significant cultural heritage value or interest, but are not designated by by-law, may be eligible for a Heritage Oshawa Historic Building Plaque. The Heritage Oshawa Historic Building Plaque is a cast bronze plaque.
Heritage Oshawa Inventory
The Heritage Oshawa Inventory (the Inventory) identifies properties of cultural heritage value and interest within the City of Oshawa. The Inventory includes all properties on the Register as well as properties identified as ‘Class A’ or ‘Class B’.
Class A properties are properties that have been evaluated by Heritage Oshawa and are determined to have the highest potential for designation.
Class B properties are properties that have been evaluated by Heritage Oshawa and are determined to have good potential for designation.
