SPECIAL NEWS: Dave Thompson was at Jeff Ruckers house in Madison after lunch on Tuesday, November 3rd working on some TR things when David Thompson suffered a heart attack. Jeff called EMS and off to the hospital he went for the installation of a stint. The doctors sent him home on Thursday and that is where Gary Rumrill reached him by phone. Just to stir the pot Gary told him Jeff gave him mouth-to-mouth, ugh! He is feeling well (Sounded really good!) and is on the road to recovery but will be on limited physical activity for some time, at least until his follow up visit with the doctors on November 25th. David states he too would like to make it to our Christmas party on the 3rd December, but that really depends on the news his doctor gives him on the 25th. David Thompson, 425 Eastgate Village Wynde, Louisville, KY 40223, his e-mail: address is [email protected] and we are sure a Best Wishes Note would be welcome.

Surely owning a classic Triumph is not that stressful. Unless you let your children drive it!

01. Presidents Message: Courtesy Russell Mills, [email protected]

Have you got your name in on the Christmas Dinner? It is always a fun time and our last meeting of the year. The year is almost over but this is the month for Thanks. I would like to thank everyone in our club for making it an enjoyment of our passion of these Little British Cars. My time as President is coming to an end. I want to thank all of you for your support and fun activities together. I know Gary Rumrill will take the wheel and drive our club well in the coming year. We have a lot planned for the coming year with the National M G meet. We are the local sponsor club. We will need all our members to help in some way or another. This will also help our bank account, for we will receive a share of the event profits. We are going to have the Bash at the end of there event. They will have a large group to stay over for our show. Hope to see you at the meeting Thursday, Nov. 19th at Roosters. Make plans for the Christmas Dinner, find something good for our auction. The last Cars and Coffee of the season will be this Saturday, it's always good to show your support for a good cause.

Take Care, Drive Safe, Russell Mills, [email protected]

02. A THANKS TO RUSSELL: - Courtesy Gary Rumrill,

Russell Mills, our departing President who now joins the BSCC Board of Directors certainly recognized and stepped up to the needs of our club - two years as VP and three as President!

If I'm not wrong, five years are nearly as long as he's been a club member!. I recall that during the election last year Russell clearly said he didn't want to be President a third year, but since no one else was willing to step up for it, he accepted the nomination. I ran for and was elected as VP.

Thanks Russell, you certainly set a tough example to follow.

Russell along with Greg Bowman accepted an additional position, Bash Chairman. It sounds like a puff job but believe me, it isn't. All we do as regular members is wash our car, show up, enjoy ourselves and then go home! I'm learning that the behind the scenes work required for a successful Bash is monumental - finding an acceptable location, publicity, food, door prizes, trophies, class award plans; etc.

Please remember St. Joe said, "No." at the last minute sending the Bash team on a scramble for a new place! Need I go on? Helpful for me, Russell and Greg have agreed to do the Bash again in 2016. Those behind the scenes volunteers so important too.

Regarding plans for the 2016 Bash, I asked Russell and Greg to look into holding it at Farmington on Bardstown Road or other similar location as alternates to the 2015 'under the bridge' downtown place because a good many of us prefer a grassy field with shade. Although I think he really likes the downtown venue and already has tentative plans arranged, he agreed. Thanks Russell.

Russell, your leadership kept our club solid, stable and fun and I look forward to following in your footsteps! Gary Rumrill, Tel:(502-239-6366 e-mail: [email protected]

05a. BSCC 2016 President Elect Gary Rumrill: intro BSCC relationship

Gary & Carol at 2014 Xmas Party Gary’s Red 1991 Lotus Elan Yellow 1973 Lotus Europa The Remarque Editor sent 2016 President Elect Gary in an email asking for a short bio to introduce him to many BSCC contact who do not know much about this enthusiast and his 33 year relationship with the Club. A Bio assignment

Gary honestly stated; “reminded how he really disliked writing job resumes! “Let me first say, thank you to the Club for electing me 2016 BSCC President”.

Page 8: Here’s one item that will be in the Auction, along with ... · Last chance please bring your 2016 BSCC Dues and Christmas Party Check. Dec 3 Thursday The BSCC Members Christmas

05b. BSCC 2016 President Elect Gary Rumrill: continued: - “After giving his request some thought I think I’d like to weave my bio with the history of the BSCC and tell you how the club came about. For those of you that have been with the club a long time, you’ve probably heard the story so feel free to skip the next paragraphs; then resume reading on the eighth one. Way back in 1965 while tanking up my ’57 Chevy with 32 cent a gallon gas I couldn’t help but notice the refrigerator white Lotus Elan at the neighboring pump and just had to ask the driver, “What the heck is that little thing?” The owner (not a salesman) had British sports car fever, a contagious one that infected me with a lifelong addiction (or is it affliction?)! White 1969 Lotus Elan, one of the two first cars in the club. Ken Oakley had the other 1966 Lotus Elan Coupe

Jump ahead in to 1981, I don’t exactly recall why I had a ‘73 SAAB Sonett, but anyway, I sold it and the resulting pocketful of money could or should have wound up in the family checking account and forever not be available for car stuff. You young guys can learn from this,

keep your car money separate from household funds!

Remember the addiction? I just had to have a Lotus Elan like the one that hooked me way back in 1965. But where in the heck could I find one? In the pre internet days the public library was a good source for out of state newspaper car ads and there I went for my searches. No luck. But, by some quirk of fate I stumbled into a Healey monthly meeting on Bardstown Road and there in the parking lot was, ready for this, a white Lotus Elan! I intro’ed myself to the owner, Carl Shelton, struck up a conversation, and at some point asked him if he would be willing to sell it. He said, “I’ve been thinking about it.” I bought it. In 1981 there was a local Lotus car club and needless to say, I quickly joined it.

This is where I met my eventual long time friend Ken Oakley. Eventual? Yes. You see, for many, many months Ken had been trying to buy Carl’s car and was always told, “Not for sale.” I guess I hit Carl at the right time, car-karma. Ken wasn’t pleased and probably still holds some grudge”.

05c. BSCC 2016 President Elect Gary Rumrill: continued: - “Ken and I were at a monthly Lotus meeting at the Village Inn Pizza on Taylorsville Road near Browns Lane and patiently waited for other members to show up. None did. I told Ken this is crazy; let’s start our own club and make it open to all British cars. He agreed.

British Sports Car Club seemed a good descriptor name and so the club was born

1983 BSCC Logo Early BSCC Beer Mug We needed officers. I was President of the American Institute of Plant Engineers at the time; traveling for work and taking on that role for our new club would have been more than I could have handled.

Ken Reluctantly accepted the position and I’m glad he did. We printed a bunch of ‘new car club’ invitation announcements (I wish I still had one) and posted them everywhere, Fleanors, Blue Horse, Cob Webb, barbershops, grocery stores and who knows where else.

Our announcements drew many more people to our premier BSCC meeting than we ever expected – gosh, what a great start!”

BEWARE: (Editors): If you drive with Gary, you will be delayed if Lotus catches his eye!

In any condition his current 1973 Europa that show piece engine “Our club, in order to be ‘real’, needed a newsletter so I wrote one (see attachment). I hope you find it interesting and also recognize some of the attendees’ names”.

“P.S. Carol, my very understanding wife, encouraged me to buy Carl Shelton’s other Lotus, a 1973 Europa in 1990. I sold the 1969 Lotus Elan to club member David O’Connell in 2008 and replaced it with a 1991 Lotus Elan that same year”.

End quote from Gary Rumrill. Next the 1st BSCC News Letter & Members.

05d. THE ORIGINAL 1982 BSCC / BRITISH SPORTS CAR CLUB: -

Gary Rumrill produced the 33 year old notes from the first BSCC meeting where Club names were suggested and here the Editor extracted a summary of the 39 cars represented by 29 attendees in 1982.

BRITISH SPORTS CAR CLUB - Notes from the first meeting -

The first meeting of the British Sports Car Club was held Sept. 30, 1982, at the Taylorsville Rd. Godfather's Pizza restaurant. The turnout was beyond what any of us arranging the get-together anticipated. It was attended by 29 owners; car models ran from A to T and from in process of restoration to Concours condition.

The responses on the questionnaires from the meeting will be used to give us direction in this newly forming club. Ten of the 29 respondents indicated they were frustrated with their car, sometimes frustrated to "Hell Yes! Your supposed to be". We also have talent in the group. Included are those experienced with electrical service, fiberglass repair, restoration and parts locating. In regards to events, 17 indicated an interest in rallies and 11 in Concours shows.

05e. BSCC 2016 President Elect Gary Rumrill: continued: - 1982 News letter:

“Pleased be prepared for the October Meeting, we will need to:

- Discuss selecting a permanent club name such as British Car Register, British Car Club; etc.

Discuss possible events that can be held in remainder of year.

Discuss publicity campaign (we haven't reached any TVR, Sunbeam or Morgan owners).

Also, for the next meeting please bring along a $10.00 bill to cover anticipated annual dues. This isn't a profit making organization --- but it also shouldn't be a loser. The dues will be used to off-set such expenses as postage and mailings. An adjustment to the $10.00 fee will be subject to officers discretion next year.

It came as no surprise that many were drawn to the first meeting by Matt McCreary's Car-talk column in “The Saturday Times”. Within a couple of days after you receive this letter, its copy along with a cover letter will be sent to Matt as a follow-up.

Bruce Hix of Tom Payette Buick/Jaguar has promised to have a door prize offering for the October meeting.

See you at Shelby's, Oct. 21, 7:00 p.m.

The thirtieth year of the Old Capitol Antique Car Festival held in the town square, this event is a annual favorite with the short drive along the spectacular Corydon Ridge, winding, rolling hills, spectacular views, Autumn leaf colors, bright sun. 09. WHERE TO HAVE A CONCOURS:

The Concours d’Elegance has it s roots in 17th Century France when the Aristocracy would parade their horst drawn carriages though the Parks of Paris.

We have Race Courses for Concours d’Elegance like Keeneland and other distinctive locations are used like French Lick; Amelia Island; Pebble Beach etc., and the 35 year old the Concours d’Elegance of America at St. Johns Estate, Michigan.

But in Britain top tier Concours d’Elegance Concours rotate at Royal Castles. Here Queen Elizabeth’s Windsor Castle on the outskirts of London aside the River Thames.

2015 at the Palace of Holyrood in Edinburgh. Beaulieu Palace (home of the British National Car Museum) named Concours d’Elegance Salon Privé honoring the original French concourse.

18. FOR SALE: NEW LOWER PRICE: Two fully restored TR6 Zenith Stromberg carburetors,

My cost for parts was $180.00 and I'll sell them for that. It will be a small loss for me because of the cost for cleaning chemicals; etc and the hours of labor (no cost) but that is okay if someone in our club can use them. Gaskets, shaft seals, o-rings, float valves, deceleration valve and piston diaphragms. $180 for the pair. We can discuss your existing carburetors' core value.

I have rebuilt many Stromberg and SU carburetors over the years and now that I'm retired I would enjoy employing these skills in a small scale endeavor. Joe at http://joecurto.com/ supplies my parts and I recommend contacting him if you want to work on your carburetors yourself. His price for two restored TR6 carburetors is $475. 19. A WINDSHIELD CLEANING TIDBIT YOU MAY FIND USEFUL: -

Gary Rumrill experience: The inside of my Lotus Elan windshield had a film on it that seemed impossible to remove despite many attempts of cleaning with paper towels.

Various agents including Windex, ammonia, alcohol, and even acetone. The film, very thin, looked like greasy paint brush strokes and was really bothersome with oncoming headlights. The best attempts at cleaning only smeared it around; not remove it.

After two days of cleaning attempts, finally, a solution, a quite simple one actually - wipe it with a NEW DRY UNWASHED MICROFIBER TOWEL (no Windex or any other window cleaner). My guess is that the paper towels merely pushed the stuff around but the microfiber towels absorbed it.

What was the source of the greasy film you ask? Dash top protector sprays! From now on I will not spray Armor All; etc directly onto the dash top because no matter how careful, there will probably be a small mist of overspray that migrates onto the glass. Instead, spray it on a cloth andwipe that on the dash.

Is this is a useful tip for you? I bet some of you figured this out a long time ago and I also bet you have some neat solutions you routinely use but haven't thought to share them with the club membership because they're so "obvious". Please share them; they might not be as obvious as you think.
