HerbertsdaleHerbertsdale is a picturesque little agricultural community nestled in the gorge of the Langtou River. The very fertile alluvial soil yields rich crops of lucerne and fruit, and some of the farms have been in the possession of the resident families for more than a century.

The small town, which is part of the Greater Mossel Bay Municipality, is well worth a visit for its typical architectural styles. It was established in 1865 on the farm Hemelrood and named after James Benton Herbert, who owned part of this farm.

Du Plessis Pass - This easy, tarred pass lies on the R327 between Mossel Bay and Herbertsdale, and finds it ends amongst green fields on the banks of the Gouritz River. The pass dates back as far as 1850.

About 1km North of the quaint village of Herbertsdale, you will find a small gravel road leading to your right. This is a public farm road, which will lead you through some beautiful, though not major, passes via the Hagelkraal farm and ultimately back to the tarred R328.

En route you will cross the access road to the old Attakwaskloof Pass. Once you reach the R328, if you haven’t had your fill of mountain passes, you can turn left and visit the Robinson Pass!

Pick your own grapes at Jakkalsvlei Private Celllar Wine Cellar or feed the elephants at Indalu Game Farm.

Dana bayWhilst often disregarded simply as a suburb of Mossel Bay, Dana Bay is in fact a conservancy, set in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, home to fine examples of coastal and limestone varieties of fynbos under threat from global warming. Limestone fynbos is rich in species and supports among the highest numbers of endemic species in the entire Cape floristic region. Because of its conservancy status, bush buck, steenbok, mongooses and Cape francolins roam freely in Dana Bay; and the prolific bird life, which includes a colony of black oyster catchers and over 85 other bird species, adds to the tranquillity and beauty of the coastline and incredible views of beach and horizon.

Great brakGreat Brak takes on new meaning. This little village, just a few kilometres from both Mossel Bay and George, is without doubt tranquil and beautiful. Great Brak has unspoilt beaches, a lagoon that is safe to swim in and generous sea views. The stillness experienced along the banks of the Great Brak river, which also offers a number of picnic spots, has led to this little town being much sought after by those wanting to escape it all. Great Brak is called such because of the brackish water of the Brak Rivers - the lagoon mouth is divided into two sandy channels with a small island between them.

Cycling Route: In and around Great Brak River - 4 routes: ranging from 20 km to 39km), Poeding (20 km), Charles Str (Pick & Pay) (20km), Perdeplaas (39km), Frangrance (36.5km)

Stok & Hoed: Short village walks - 7 routes ranging from 30 minutes to 90 minutes

Art Route: 14 local artists- Venues open all year round. Experience art in all its forms!

Fragrance Route: Experience the explosion of senses along panoramic views and meet the people along the road.

lIttle brakA tranquil little haven of sea, lagoon and river, virtually lost in time, wedged between Mossel Bay and Groot Brak on the Garden Route, is Little Brak River. Mainly a resort area, this part of the coast is renowned for having the mildest climate throughout the year and Little Brak River manages to achieve a subtle balance between energetic seaside activities and con-templative quiet to restore the soul that makes it a wonderful place to stay and one that remains relatively unspoilt.

The river teems with fish and is navigable for about 20 kilometres, which makes it a great place for canoeing, boating and fishing, and birdlife in the area is rewarding too, despite the fact that Little Brak River is only some 18 kilometres outside of Mossel Bay - a plus for those wanting to shop.

GlentanaJust east of the Great Brak River, almost half way between Mossel Bay and George, lies the beautiful seaside village of Glentana, its beaches topped by fynbos covered cliffs that plunge precipitously into the Indian Ocean.

The origins of the name, Glentana, are a little murky, but there are those who believe that there is a very strong connection between the town and a certain whiskey still brewed in Northern Scotland that goes by the same name.

The rich combination of Milkwood trees, white beaches and rocky outcrops make for a beauty that leaves every visitor rewarded, and even today, despite the demand for property along the Garden Route, manages to remain uncluttered and unspoilt.

Glentana Bay lies in an ancient riverbed where shell collecting and fishing are pastimes that have changed little since the origins of the town that began with a smattering of houses in the early 1900s.
