CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S REPORTThe Jeremy Kyle Golf Classic in support of HEROS, held at Windlesham Golf Club, proved to be an amazing success recently. After rigorous meetings, phone calls and planning, the day arrived and, judging by the feedback we’ve had, can’t come again quickly enough for those attending. A huge thank you to Jeremy for his tireless work and organisational skills in making this a day for every golfer’s calendar, and for the immense support he and his wife Carla are giving HERoS.

HEROS Ball

The next social event, which we hope has been inked in on your calendar after such a wonderful evening last year, is the HERoS Ball. We have a different, and great fun, theme this year. At only £100 each guests will be treated to a fabulous evening of dinner, dancing and entertainment, in a glorious setting

at North Farm Stud with panoramic countryside views. Tickets are sure to go quickly so don’t leave it too long before ordering yours. Details on page 11.The HERoS Ball is our next social event, but we also recently enjoyed the fifth HERoS Annual Horse Show at Newbury Showground on Sunday 3rd July. See Page 5.Despite the current financial climate we are maintaining momentum with a steady flow of potential loanees visiting seven days a week. Weekends can be hectic as even HERoS staff need a day off – however complaints are few and far between and nothing keeps us motivated more than seeing HERoS horses off to a new home and a useful life.Recently we received unrelated donations from two families who had taken collections at the funeral of close family in recognition of their

relatives’ interest in horseracing, the people and particularly the animals who make the sport. i was touched by their thoughtfulness at such a sensitive time. When we look at the numbers of horses that go off the radar at the end of their careers it is good to know there are people out there who do care and remember HERoS even at the most difficult times, so thank you to them for their support.

... BITESIZE NEWS ... BITESIZE NEWS ... BITESIZE NEWS ... Bucket Shakes: We had our first bucket shake at York Racecourse in May, combined with an appearance

by our Ambassador Monsignor (see our Club page p16). it was a very damp day but we still raised more than £600. HERoS also went to Newmarket for the first day of the July Festival and collecting a very worthwhile £1,548.02. This was arranged courtesy of Sportingbet who were sponsoring on the day. A few days later HERoS was invited to collect at Salisbury’s Ladies Evening where £657.02 was collected. Several races on the evening were sponsored by Bathwick Tyres, another of our supporters who always ask for permission for HERoS to collect when they sponsor. Since then we have been to Windsor twice, again courtesy of Sportingbet, and for the second year running went to Goodwood for Sussex Stakes Day collecting a wonderful £1,808.83 with Monsignor who was at the whole meeting as part of The British Champion Series. HERoS was offered a last minute collection at Epsom on a Thursday evening but the weather was terrible so the crowd was very sparse. The collection only amounted to less than £200 but we are hoping that Epsom invite us back next year for a more prestigious meeting.

Lambourn Open Day

HERoS had a stand at the afternoon session of Lambourn open Day and Monsignor paraded with other retired racehorses. Mick Fitzgerald was commentating on the parade and gave both HERoS and Monsignor a good amount of airtime. Monsignor looked great and as usual took it all in his stride. it was a lovely day out for him as he hacked over from and back to Grace’s brother’s yard at Linkslade Stables to make it more of an outing for him.

Gatcombe Festival

HERoS took their trade stand to The Gatcombe Festival for all three days conducting a raffle and talking to people about rehoming. We saw some old friends and hopefully made some new ones as well.

45 HEROS horses rehomed to date

our first Golf Day took place at Windlesham Golf Course on 7th June and we must say a big thanks to Scott Patience, general manager, who gave us a wonderful day. The event was hosted and organised by Jeremy Kyle and his assistant Brett Capaldi.Sky Sports attended and interviewed several of the celebrities during the day, which started with breakfast and Celebrities meeting their teams. After some putting and driving practice 23 teams took part with Zinzan Brooke winning the Celebrity prize and his team of Dan Abraham, Andy Clifton and Bruce Jackson, winning the Team prize. No one scored a hole-in-one to win the BMW kindly donated by BMW of Sunningdale – but Jamie Redknapp won the Nearest the Pin competition. The day finished with a very tasty three-course dinner during which Bobby Davro entertained as auctioneer. There were some great items on offer ranging from tickets to see Rod Stewart to a villa holiday and a First of a limited print of an original painting by

Lester Piggott. He painted this for us when acting as ‘mystery guest’ for the HERoS style ‘it’s a Question of Sport’ at our race day at Lingfield earlier this year. Bidding was very competitive and much-needed funds were raised. The day was a great success with golfers, and guests who came for the evening, saying how much they enjoyed themselves. Thanks must go to everyone that came and especially to Jeremy and Brett for making the day possible and, who knows, this may now become an annual event. Watch this space.

The HERoS 5th Annual Horse Show took place at Newbury Showground in July and the weather Gods were on our side. The sun was shining on the day but rain in previous days had eased the ground resulting in larger entries for the jumping classes, with lots of people returning to the secretary’s tent to make additional entries. in fact entries in all classes were up on the previous year and once again the standard was very high.

Best

There were five rings including Ex-Racehorse/TB, a Hunter’s Ring, Showing, Jumping and Clear Round. HERoS held two classes specifically for horses loaned or sold through them in the TB Ring, which is always a great opportunity for people to show off their HERoS horses to their best. We were extremely pleased with how they all behaved and looked. it is always great for us to see how our HERoS have adapted to activities away from their normal surroundings, as when they are home checked. A show is always a good indication of their progress.Plenty of new people were competing together with competitors who had been coming since the show started in 2007 – we love to see people returning year after year. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and puts the event in their calendar for the following year. We also had more

spectators and more trade stands, which makes for a great atmosphere with plenty of support for competitors from friends and family.A fun show with something for everyone, including Fancy Dress this year, our judges and helpers enjoyed themselves along with those taking part.

NEW HOmE NEWS

Charlotte Fisher, who has HERoS Billingsgate on loan, has entered him in the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Biggest Heart competition – and he has been shortlisted. You can vote for him in the ‘Best Temperament’ category by going to www.ror.org.uk and scrolling down to the vote for the RoR heart Awards section.

Here’s why Charlotte has made the entry:Billingsgate (Billy) came to me last June after the death of my previous horse who was very special to me. His death left me heartbroken and i knew it would take another very special horse to replace him. Billy is so loving; there really isn’t a bad bone in his body. He settled in to his new home from day one and, as the new boy on the block, everyone wanted to say hello to

him. He stood there and lowered his head for the children and adults alike to fuss and stroke him.over the months Billy showed his amazing temperament in escorting the kiddies and ponies as well as nervous youngsters on hacks never once putting a foot out of line, hanging back to reassure them and leading them when they were nervous.Billy’s biggest role on our yard is talking to my brother. Dominic is autistic and bottles his emotions up inside. He won’t tell another person how he is feeling or how his day has been, but he will tell Billy. Billy stands in his stable, and listens to Dominic giving him his full attention even when hay is in the stable, or when it’s busy outside. He gently rests his head in Dominic’s arms, while Dominic

tells him anything that’s bothering him and just generally how he feels. Dominic always comes out happier and more content when he’s had a chat with Billy.Billy has given everyone on our yard a lot of love, not just to Dominic and me but also to anyone who wants a hug or a kiss; he’s there always willing to listen. He truly, truly is an amazing horse with so much love to give and i think he should be honoured for it.

We received an email from one of our loanees after they had received the following congratulations from their riding club having qualified for The Riding Clubs National Championships in Horse Trials. Hopefully someone will be able to get to the finals to cheer Ellis and Solar Son on.

“Massive ‘Well Done’ at the weekend to all the riders who took

part at the Horse Trials Qualifier, and did such a fantastic job.”

Hannah, Emily, Ellis and Laura – including Solar Son – qualified as the Novice Team riders to go through to the National Championships on August 5-7 at Aston-le-Walls. Congratulations.

IN ORBIT OF NATIONAL SUCCESS

Solar Son and Ellis are in qualifying form and looking forward to the National Championships in August.

----------------------- HEROS Letters -----------------------

Hi HEROS,

Drift has been very busy just lately – we competed at the Herts County Show in the retrained racehorse class and came 4th and also won the best veteran in the class.

We tried to qualify for the Horse of the Year Show ‘Search for a Star’ but just didn’t stand a chance against the professionals, although the judge did say he was very good for his age, which was very pleasing.

Sue Phillips

Hello HEROS,Everything is still going very well with Del Mar and he’s been to his second show now, completing a Prelim and… a clear round! The Prelim went well, we achieved 53%, which actually wasn’t too far off the placings, so i was very pleased. it felt accurate but a little unbalanced in places, which reflects where he is in his flat work, and the comments matched this. However, the jumping outshined this. it was a mini/cross-pole clear round, which i’d chosen so that, if necessary, he could have a good look and just step over. His jumping generally starts off like that at the moment, as happened with the first couple of practice jumps. The actual course was fairly imposing for a clear round – all the fences were well dressed with flowers, some had fillers at the sides and there were planks too. it was also a large arena with lots of other jumps and distractions. i went in expecting lots of hesitation, wobbling and stepping over from standstill, but what i got was a lovely flowing round. He didn’t look at anything, didn’t hesitate and sailed through the double (first one ever). We did most of the round in trot, but felt confident enough to canter over the last couple as he was going so well. He couldn’t have been any better, so his clear round rosette was well deserved! He was so well behaved at the show, even with several little ponies going in all directions in the jumping warm-up, and is always quite happy standing around with a hay net, whether on or off the lorry. He’s such a joy.

Thoroughbreds need far more hard feed than

many other breeds just to maintain their weight and

muscle structure. This is the one area that people seem to

have problems with when taking on a thoroughbred. Many are

under the impression that if you feed too much it will then become fresh and hard to handle. This is certainly NOT the case, as long as you feed them correctly balanced feed containing the right level of protein and mineral supplements.

At North Farm Stud, the base of HEROS, we feed our own oat-based mix with balanced mineral supplements. My father, iain Muir (senior), maintains a strong reputation in the racing industry and our feed, mixed on site in a tonne mixer, is the result of many years of family development. We have horses on box rest who get four feeds a day and keep a sane head, it is most important that the mineral supplement balance in the feed is correct to prevent overheating. Feeding neat oats would create issues in most breeds but the problem with thoroughbreds is that if you under feed them they lose weight very quickly and, before you know it, look very light. it is then much harder to get the condition back on.Below i have set out a programme, which is only a guide so you can feed alternative equivalents and the quantities can be adjusted

Page 9: Help HEROS Help Horses HEROStest.heroscharity.org/downloads/newsletters/2011-heros-enews-07-s… · on page 11. The HERoS Ball is our next social event, but we also recently enjoyed

as you feel necessary when the horse is looking well covered and has good top line condition. At HERoS we feed hard feed all year round, even in the summer if they are turned out full time. Grass is not enough to maintain condition and top line. Even once the correct condition is achieved, we recommend easing back on the hard feed rather than cutting it completely. Many horses in fields around the country with grass bellies and no top line is through lack of feed not just lack of exercise. We have horses here who have not been ridden for many years but you would never know it. Feeding properly is the key.i suggest feeding a mix with a balancer included for ease. A good suggestion is Dodson and Horrell Stud Diet or Dodson and Horrell build-up mix. There are other brands of course and you should look at the protein being around 10-14% when building a horse up. i would always advise against feeding a thoroughbred a pasture or cool mix as, contrary to popular belief, these will not maintain its condition in the longterm.Additional supplements we recommend are:• Blue Chip Dynamic is a very good joint and bone supplement but you could use an equivalent. Most ex-racehorses benefit greatly from such a supplement for longevity and to overcome the wear and tear they may have got from their athletic life.• Blue Chip Pro builds top line muscle and is also a probiotic,

very good for putting on condition and maintaining general well-being as it contains yea-sac.• Oil – two squirts daily in their evening feed is plenty. oil aids digestion, which helps stop impactions occurring and keeps their bowels in good working order and coats in good condition. The best oil to use, in my opinion, is Karron oil (made from linseed) which i have found to be both palatable and exceptionally good. other options are soya oil or sunflower oil from the supermarket. Two squirts (60ml dose x 2) or about a mugful in the feed daily is about right, but build that up gradually until they get used to the taste.• Hoof supplement (if necessary). if you are not sure ask your farrier.• Alfalfa A. (This looks like green chop but is a very high form of calcium and roughage). A handful for breakfast and a double handful at night is the right amount. Some people try to feed it on its own but it has no great nutritional value apart from the roughage and calcium and is not very palatable alone.it is best to feed breakfast, lunch and dinner if three feeds are necessary. We also do night feeds at North Farm Stud for horses in competition work, little and often being a good option. if the horse is carrying the correct amount of condition then drop the lunchtime feed. if feeding a conditioner do so at dinner time.

Horses benefit from being kept on a joint supplement and some alternatives are Cortaflex and Flex HA by Feedmark – there are several on the market. • Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is an extremely good additive. About a mugful is the correct amount and keeps their blood and immune systems in balance.

Condition

Feed your horse enough hard feed to support the exercise he is doing and to increase his condition until he is looking well rounded. After that maintenance will be necessary so you may be able to reduce the amounts slightly. i am not suggesting that you must use everything listed here but these are the things we use to exceptional effect and can recommend them. Remember – it is much easier to let a thoroughbred get too light than it is to get it carrying the right condition. My guide here is a result of knowledge and adjustment based on experience, in this case, over my lifetime and my father’s.

Elite Racing Club is a wonderful supporter of HERoS. Not only do they print these newsletters free of charge but they also sponsor two horses that are here for rehoming. Each year they organise Club visits and about 70 members arrived here at the end of May.

A tour of the yard followed an introduction from Grace – members always enjoy petting our horses and giving them polos, often not possible when they visit a racing yard. They saw both of their sponsored horses working in the school and members who had been before

could see their progression, with one of their horses having now found a home.Sue Jannaway also rode one of Elite’s own homebred horses here for retraining and rehoming. The group were very pleased with what they saw especially when they learned he already has a home with one of our staff. if anyone wants to join an Elite Visit to see what we do here, we are always able to add a small number to the list. Please call the office on 01488 638820 for details.

Donation...Dawn Wright, with her family, visited recently to make a donation in memory of her father. He had always been a big racing fan and so the family made a collection for HERoS at his funeral. They had a long chat with Grace and enjoyed a tour whilst they were here. We would like to extend our thanks to them as well as our sympathies for their loss.

“When I was asked to be a patron of HEROS I agreed straight away. I had followed the charity’s progress and knew what an amazing amount of care was taken by them in re-training and rehoming ex-racehorses. Some of the horses have been very successful in their racing careers, others not, but HEROS has given each one of them the opportunity of finding a new life outside of racing. They have gone on to such areas as eventing, dressage, riding horses and also companions where they are just fun for people to be around. HEROS works with these horses in such a positive way and so prevents them being discarded because they can no longer race.”

Mick Fitzgerald (HERoS Patron and Ex-National Hunt Jockey)

“HEROS is an excellent and much needed charity. So many ex-racehorses fall into bad hands once their racing careers are over. That is why Stuart and I were so impressed with the care and attention given by HEROS to all the horses they deal with. Grace and her team found our ex-racehorse a wonderful permanent home where we know HEROS will always “keep in touch” to make sure he is well and happy.”

Monsignor is enjoying a busy summer in his ‘MEET THE RACEHORSE’ role at racecourses during the British Champion Series.Qipco (Qatar investment & Projects Development Holding Company) is one of the leading private share holding companies in Qatar and is supporting the British Champion Series, featuring all the big flat races in England and culminating in the richest day of racing at Ascot in october.in a bid to generate interest in aspects of racing behind the scenes, Qipco arranged various displays that vary from small animal farms to having a go on a mechanical horse. Monsignor was invited to attend so that people

could get up close and personal with an ex-racehorse and learn about the lives of horses after racing.Qipco provided a portable stable for him. Many racegoers had their photo taken with him and took away information on HERoS. A bucket or two were also on hand to catch those donations. The tour started at Newmarket for the 1,000 and 2,000

guineas staying overnight at The National Stud. His Newmarket highlights included an interview with John Francome and making friends with an Alpaca at the small animal farm next to his stable. A first for our seasoned campaigner Monsignor was very taken with this intriguing creature and has put one on his Christmas list. A damp day at York followed and his Christmas list grew to include a big screen TV – he had a great view of the racing and interviews from his stable. it was a brief visit back home to Newbury for a local booking the next day then on to Haydock for an unexpected meeting with the local constabulary (above) and a Frankie Dettori cardboard cut out. He has since been back to Newmarket for two days at the July Course and ‘his usual room’ at the National Stud and, by the time you read this, he will have been to Ascot and on to Glorious Goodwood. For future dates please see the Diary of Events and if you are there come and see us.
