Organic food garden for theSW Night ShelterAn organic food garden for theSomerset West Night Shelter hasbeen months in planning, but onthe weekend of 24 and 25 Augustthese plans became a reality.

On these days Urban Harvest ar-rivedattheshelterwithtrainingmate-rial and a truckload of organic gardensupplies.

This project was organised andfunded by Sandy Immelman and wassuccessfully implementedwith theas-sistance of the City of Cape Town.

“Ms Immelman’s idea was to up-skillclientsinthenightshelter,givingthem organic gardening knowledge,

whilst making the shelter more foodsecure.Thiswillmakefundsavailablefor other much-needed items, as wellas improve the nutritional value oftheirvegetables,”saidJoSwart,chair-person of the Somerset West NightShelter.

The hope with this initiative is fortheNightShelter toproducesufficientorganic produce for them to sell andgenerate an income.

as catering for the two-day event.A number of City officials also at-

tended the training along with repre-sentatives from the Street People’sProgramme aswell as fromSocial De-velopment and Early Childhood De-velopment.

The training was done by Ben Getzof Urban Harvest, who taught every-one what organic food is, and demon-strated compost building, bed layoutand preparation, pest control andmaintenance.

“This organic food garden is a greatupliftment initiative and an exampleofhowboththeCityandthecommuni-ty can join forces,” said Swart.

Mouthwatering easy-to-make seafood paellaSpain’s most famous dish is a yummy con-coction of rice, vegetables, beans, seafoodand spices.

This easy seafood paella recipe will alloweven themost inexperienced chef to produce anexciting and mouth-watering dinner.(Serves 6 – 8)

Ingredients:2 tbsp olive oil1 onion, finely chopped

1 green pepper, seeded and finely chopped1 red or orange pepper, seeded and cut into

strips2 carrots, peeled and cut into julienne

strips2 cloves of crushed garlic2 tomatoes, skinned and finely chopped1 tsp saffron350 g long-grain rice1 kgmixed seafood (fish, prawns, calamari

and mussels)2-3 tbsp fresh coriander or parsley,

chopped200 g sugar snap peas, trimmedfresh limes or lemons, cut into wedges

Method:Heat olive oil in a large frying pan.Add onion, green and red peppers and car-

rots, and fry over a lowheat for twominutes.Add garlic, tomatoes and saffron and fry

for three minutes.Add the rice and stir well to make sure the

rice is well coated.Add about 800 ml water or seafood stock

and bring to the boil.Simmer for 10 minutes.Add seafood, coriander and sugar snap

peas and stir well.Coverandsimmer fora further 10 – 15min-

utes.Add a little water if it gets too dry.The dish is ready once the mussels open

and the rice is tender.Season with salt and freshly ground black

The City of Cape Town will commence its process for reviewing the 2012 – 2017 five-year plan(IDP) and the drafting of the 2014/15 Budget.

This will be the second review of the term of office plan which was approved by Council on28 May 2012.

The 2013/14 IDP and Budget time-schedule outlines the activities that will be followed indrafting the 2014/15 Budget and amended IDP. The aim of reviewing the IDP is to ensurethat municipal planning considers the assessment of its performance measurements and theextent that changing circumstances so demand.

Shelter helps the homelessWiththehelpandcontin-ued support of the Hel-derberg community, theSomerset West NightShelter has gone fromstrength to strength.

Last year the sheltermore than doubled its in-come and now has sevenpermanent staff.This ison-ly some of the growth re-portedonbythecommitteechairperson, Jo Swart atthe annual general meet-ing (AGM) on 15 August.In his report he reaf-

firmed the organization’scontribution to the com-munity and efforts to high-light the plight of the homeless anddestitute.The original goals set out for the

Somerset West shelter included con-verting the staff accommodation intoasuitableoffice.“Thegenerosity fromdonors has resulted in the shelter’smanager and social worker having

their own office space which featuresawarm andwelcoming reception andmeeting area,” said Swart.In addition, there is now accommo-

dation for the night staff.Swart said that various meetings

had been held at local churches andcommunity centres to assist the

homeless with basicneeds, such as administra-tiveassistancewithidenti-ty documents, social grantapplications, old age homeapplications and possibleaccommodation in theshelter.Swart reported that at

any given time there arearound 700 homeless peo-ple on the streets in theHelderberg.The Somerset West

Night Shelter supports theCity of Cape Town’s “GiveResponsibly” campaign,

with the Shelter striving tobecome a point of call for thecommunity when dealingwithindividualswhoarebeg-ging, asking for assistance orany other issues pertainingto the homeless.“In keeping with the “Give

Responsibly” campaign theorganization has recentlylaunched a voucher cam-paign,wherebyvoucherscanbe purchased for R10 each.These are then given to thoseasking for help instead ofcash. In this way the moneygoes to the Shelter and not tothe individual.With this voucher the indi-

vidual is guaranteed a warmmeal, clothing, shower, bedding andif possible accommodation.The vouchers can be purchased

from the Life Church Somerset West,Helderberg Crime Watch office inSomerset Mall, United Church inBright Street, to mention but a few.To find out how to get involved con-
