Helapet go RED for Red Nose Day

Season 6 of Study Day series just around the corner

Last month Helapet took part in Comic Relief to support those suffering in the UK and across the world. Helapet helped to raise over £35, which is enough to vaccinate 7 children against deadly diseases including meningitis, tetanus and pneumonia!

The team participated by wearing red and sported cool Red Nose Day pin badges in support of the cause. To keep the donations rolling in, Redd Menzies from our cleanroom unit kindly volunteered to have his head and beard chopped for charity!

How do we handle the leachable/extractable issue in a pharmacy setting when we wish to extend the shelf life of compounded cytostatic agents in different packaging?Authors: Iben Larsson, Rainer Trittler and Natalia Navas Iglesias, The Danish Research Unit for Hospital Pharmacy (Amgros), Copenhagen

AbstractThe incidence of cancer is increasing worldwide, mainly due to the fact that people are living longer. To ease the increased burden, hospital pharmacies in Denmark will introduce semi-serial production, which extends the shelf lives of drugs compared to those stated in the SPCs. Leachables/ extractables can occur under certain solvent and temperature conditions which can affect the stability of the cytotoxic agents, and so the toxicological risk to the patient. If the packaging supplier provides no information, the hospital pharmacies have to screen for the leachables/extractables themselves but they do not have resources to undertake leachable/extractable studies. It is also rare that papers concerning stability studies state clearly in which packaging the stability has been is measured. Therefore going forward, the information that the hospital pharmacies need from the manufacturers are details regarding which exact chemical leachables have been found, in which amount and which methods have been applied in these studies.
