Chafee Grant Application, the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA), and Chafee Need Analysis Report (NAR)
Enroll at least half time in an eligible school

Dependency when you were between the ages of 16 and 18
Social Services will verify the foster youth eligibility status
CHAFEE GRANT
Accept for credit, full or partial coursework
satisfactorily completed by a pupil while attending a public school, or non public, non-sectarian school or agency.
Your District has Board Policy giving guidance to
the allocation of seat time to credits earned. Education Code Section 48645
Full, Partial and Seat Time Credits (AB 490)
California legislation exempts foster youth from local graduation requirements if:
◦ youth transfers school or districts in 11th or 12th grade and,
◦ would not be able to reasonably meet these additional local requirements (electives)
◦ See attached summary of requirements
Graduation Requirements (AB 167)
A new school must “immediately” enroll a foster youth even if the youth has
◦ outstanding fees, fines, textbooks, or other items
◦ is unable to produce records or clothing normally required for enrollment, such as previous academic records, medical records, immunization
records, proof of residency, other documentation, or school uniforms
Immediate means attending classes
Education CODE § 48853.5(d)(4)(B).
