CURRICULUM

VoCaL InstRUCtIon/ RepeRtoIRe CoaChIng

Daily voice training for beginning through advanced students leads each student to a new level of technical skill and development of their voice as a performing instrument. Coaching introduces the musical and interpretive work that goes into the creation of an artistic performance within a framework of historical style.

aCtIng foR sIngeRs

Focus on basic and advanced acting techniques of movement, line interpretation, characterization, etc., addressing the special circumstances and skills involved in being a singing actor.

peRfoRManCe pRepaRatIon

With daily concert and staging rehearsals, students will be challenged to apply the skills they are learning in preparation for performance. The 3-week intensive course will include a concert of songs and arias, and end with a performance of staged scenes.

VoCaL syMposIUM

An opportunity for students to ask questions and resolve issues of technique and interpretation in a seminar setting with the Institute’s Master Teachers.

LIVe peRfoRManCes

Song and Aria concert on Friday, August 4th. Final performance of opera scenes on Thursday, August 10th.

DR. eLIzabeth WateRbURy, Director, Principal Coach/Accompanist

As Director of Choral Studies at Shasta College, Dr. Waterbury directs the College’s Concert, Jazz and Chamber Choirs and the Shasta Community Chorale. She teaches voice, and is an experienced coach and accompanist. For 8 years she attended and taught at U.C. Santa Barbara, and served as the Founding Artistic Director of the Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus. Prior to that she served as Artistic Director of the San Francisco Boys Chorus in performances with San Francisco Opera and Symphony. She has conducted operas, musicals and choral concerts.

RobeRt WateRbURy, Artistic and Stage Director; Principal Voice Instructor

Mr. Waterbury has over fifty years of experience as a performing artist, voice teacher and stage director. He has appeared in concert, oratorio and opera in the United States and Europe. In Frankfurt, Germany, he was the Founding Artistic Director of the Rhein-Main Lyrisches Operntheater (Lyric Opera Theater). He is an experienced opera conductor and stage director, and has worked extensively with young performers. He is the co-director of the Shasta College Opera Workshop, and for the past 14 years he has been Artistic Director and principal voice teacher for the Shasta Vocal Institute.

RaphaeLLa MeDIna, Voice Instructor, Coach

Ms. Medina, mezzo-soprano, has recently completed a Master of Music degree from the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston where she was the recipient of the Hirsch Endowment and the Carlucci Endowment. She completed her undergraduate studies at the Florida State University School of Music and has performed in opera, musical theater, concerts and recitals throughout the United States and Europe. She recently participated in a series of master classes with Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato in collaboration with the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall. She has also participated in Marilyn Horne’s Carnegie Hall master class series. Roles she has performed include Stephano in Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet, Elizabeth Proctor in Ward’s The Crucible, Eponine is Les Miserables and many more. We look forward to having Raphaella with us in this year’s Vocal Institute.

ChRIstopheR WIthRoW, Voice Instructor, Coach

Mr. Withrow is a graduate of Shasta College, where he studied voice and opera. He went on to complete his Bachelor’s degree at CSU Stanislaus, and his Master of Music degree in vocal performance at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he was a student of Tod Fitzpatrick. Chris is now pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Alabama where he is a Graduate Teaching Assistant in opera. Mr. Withrow has appeared professionally with the Townsend Opera Players, Simpson University, and the Modesto Symphony. A recipient of a major scholarship award from the McConnell Foundation, he has many opera roles to his credit, including the Count in Le Nozze di Figaro, Dr. Grenville in La Traviata, Prince Yamadori in Madama Butterfly and President Garland in the world premiere of Amir Zaheri’s Freedom and Fire!. We are very pleased to welcome this former student of great accomplishment back to Shasta College to work with our students.

aboUt the InstItUte The 2017 Shasta Vocal Institute is an intensive three-week course in applied voice and acting that provides a unique opportunity for high school (age 14 and up) and college-age singers to prepare for advanced studies, who are able to meet the physical and musical demands of art song, opera and musical theater repertoire in an intensified artistic atmosphere. This is a 3-unit Shasta College course that meets Monday through Friday with a daily schedule that incorporates vocal instruction, repertoire coaching, acting classes, and staging of scenes from operas and musicals. Participants are introduced to both beginning and advanced concepts of technique and interpretation in art song, opera, and musical theatre repertoire and the course will conclude with a live performance at Shasta College on August 10th, 2017.

RegIstRatIon anD feesTHE VOCAL INSTITUTE: MUS 50, SECTION #U2906 3-units/$46 per unit which totals $138.

Additional Fees include:Health Fee - $17 Parking Fee - $15 Campus Ctr Fee - $15.50

Class Schedule:M-F - 7/24/17-8/10/17 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Building 600, Room 638

There is an alternative section, U2907 (2-units) available for students who have a conflicting Summer Session class.

Students with conflicts should check in with the Institute Director. A limited amount of need-based scholarship assistance is available. Register at www.shastacollege.edu to secure your place in class.

aUDItIons Auditions for placement in voice classes and for show casting will be held on Saturday, July 22, Rm 638 from 10am to 2pm. All registered students should call Dr. Elizabeth Waterbury at (530) 242-2367 for an audition appointment.

DR. eLIzabeth WateRbURy, Director, Principal Coach/Accompanist
