  • wWhat a year!

    Its easy to say that about every year at Hed, each one is filled with the exciting mixture of

    sales, product development, wind tunnel testing for products and riders, and of course rac-

    ing. Throw the Olympics into the mix and words have a hard time describing the past 12

    months. As I write this the Olympics have just ended. The number of medals won by cy-

    clists riding Hed wheels was both impressive and humbling at the same time.

    As I studied the start lists for the mens and womens TT a lot of the names were familiar. I

    have worked with many of them as they prepared themselves for the games, some for the

    past few years as they pursued the dream of competing in London. Just as all these Olym-

    pians are thankful to parents, coaches, team mates, and friends for their support, I too am

    thankful to all the staff of Hed Wheels who have pushed themselves and me to produce the

    worlds best bicycle wheels.

    C2 TECHNOLOGY Dissatisfied with wheel tire integration, Hed invented C2 Technology

    which solves many problems. By widening the tire bed, the aerodynamics are improved by

    smoothing airflow from the tire to the rim. At the same time, the wider tire bed decreases

    rolling resistance, allows for lower pressures to be run in the tire, and improves comfort

    and cornering grip.

    TRUE SPEED

    Over the past 26 years Steve Hed has spent his energy developing cycling equipment to be

    the best it can be. When it comes to wheels the end goal is simply to make them as fast

    as possible. The Worlds Most Aerodynamic Wheels, a title that all wheel companies wish

    they could claim. What most people do not realize is that Heds technology goes beyond just

    aerodynamics to bring you the fastest wheels on earth. An on-going process, Steve Heds

    True Speed methodology is holistic in its approach. Developing True Speed wheels involves

    aerodynamics but goes on to address the other major issues of tire performance, stability

    in crosswinds, lateral stiffness, drivetrain, efficiency, durability, comfort, quality control, and

    weight. Each Hed wheel addresses these aspects in different ways, and this is truly where

    the art of wheel building is born. At the heart of our aero wheels are two key technologies:

    Stability Control Technology and C2 Technology

    STABILITY CONTROL TECHNOLOGY Simply put, it greatly reduces the ef-fect of crosswinds on our aero wheels. Blistering fast is best served with amazing control.

    SCT is another step in our ongoing quest to build the fastest wheels on the planet.

  • In 2007 Hed revolutionized the aero clincher wheel with our C2 Jet models. With the

    worlds fastest time trialists now riding clincher Jets, it is a perfect time to bring the same

    speed and durability to an all-carbon clincher. With an extremely aero proprietary tire/rim in-

    terface, and a 25mm wide SCT tuned rim, Vanquish is the worlds fastest and best handling

    all-carbon clincher wheel. Durability tested on Minnesotas urban potholes and gravel farm

    roads.

    To make them strong enough for everyday use, we developed several new molding pro-

    cesses. We do not usually make a big deal about building our own manufacturing equipment

    and wheels, but we have been doing it for 25 years. Without that experience the Vanquish

    would not be possible. From first drawings to completed wheels, the Vanquish is made right

    here in Minnesota, USA.

    As the inventor of the Aero wheel (Hed CX ca. 1987) Steve Hed refused to enter the low

    profile aluminum wheel market unless he had something as revolutionary as his first wheels.

    You can thank the Jet wheel for flipping the clincher vs. tubular debate on its head. In 2011 the

    Jet 6 was ridden to victory in the Tour de France, then a Jet 9 and Jet Disc was ridden to vic-

    tory at the World Championship TT. This was the first time that a clincher wheel had won a TT

    in the TDF or Worlds. The C2 clincher platform allows for lower rolling resistance than you can

    get from a tubular tire. Combine this with the unmatched aerodynamics and you get an overall

    package that has greater speed than anything else available.
