Hebou hammers out a win in Pacific MMI Vehicles Insurance Limited �Don�t Drink and Drive� Cricket Legends T20 Cricket Bash

Papua New Guinea cricket fans were treated to a spectacular final of the Pacific MMI Vehicles Insurance Limited �Don�t Drink and Drive� Cricket Legends T20 Bash on Sunday December 07 played in front of a crowd of over 4,000 people at Amini Park in Port Moresby and beamed all over PNG LIVE through both EMTV and the FM100 radio network.

The final between Hebou Hammer and Pacific MMI Marlins was fought right down to the wire but Hebou proved to be the champion team thanks to former Test batsman Damien Martyn who hit a 92 not out to lead the side to a four wicket win over the Marlins with 4 balls to spare.

Both teams booked a place in the finals after winning their semi finals matches with Hebou (5/124) narrowly UMW (6/123) and Pacific MMI Marlins (9/124) escaping with a two run win over Air Niugini Jets (9/122).

The six visiting Aussie cricket legends Andrew Symonds (Brian Bell Bulldogs), Damien Martyn (Hebou Hammer), Andrew Bichel (Air Niugini Jets), Jimmy Maher (UMW Thunder), Greg Blewett (Pacific MMI Marlins) and Michael Kasprowicz (Be Mobile Orange Men) were all very excited by the talents displayed by the local PNG cricketers.

For the grand final on Sunday all six legends were split into the two teams with Symonds and Kasprowicz joining Blewett playing for Pacific MMI Marlins with Bichel and Maher joining Martyn in playing for Hebou Hammer. The Pacific MMI Marlins started their innings well with Greg Blewett (57) and local young gun Lega Siaka (25) putting on a 77 run partnership for the first wicket before Jimmy Maher caught Blewett at deep point off Tanti Heni bowling. Blewett had the crowd on their toes and screaming for more boundaries when he smashed five sixes and three fours all over Amini Park. Siaka soon followed Blewett after he was caught at deep mid on courtesy of a Maher classic which the young Hanuabada opener tried to hit it for a six. At 2/86 the Pacific MMI Marlins were comfortable but then entered Andrew Symonds who made a quick fire 41 runs which included three massive sixes that sealed a BIG score for his side. Unfortunately the talented Australian all rounder could not reach his half century when Lae based cricketers teamed up, with Billy Maha made a classic catch at long on off Hitolo Areni�s bowling to dismiss a bitterly disappointed Symonds. Local players Vali Albert (24) and Mahuru Dai (9 not out) made a handy little 24 run partnership to bring their final total to 158 after 20 overs. In reply Hebou Hammer got off to a disaster start when Michael Kasprowicz got the precious wickets of openers Tanti Heni (0) and Jimmy Maher (1). At 2/2 Hebou Hammer were looking down the gun barrel but thanks to classy batsman Damien Martyn the match was still alive. Martyn ripped apart Marlins bowling attack when he smashed 11 fours and two big sixes to put Hammer in the race to win the trophy. He shared a couple of crucial partnership on the way to victory with PNG U19 youngster Sese Bau (20), National coach Andy Bichel (30) and Bill Maha (19). Martyn and Maha paired to put on a breathtaking 34 run partnership to finishing the match on a high note when Maha hit a beautiful four to wrap up the match. In presenting the Trophy to the Winning team, The Hebou Hammer, Pacific MMI CEO Wayne Dorgan hailed the Event a massive success and a fantastic promotion for the �Don�t Drink and Drive � campaign. �Whilst I would have loved to see my team the Marlins win, I think that we saw PNG cricket at its best� stated Mr Dorgan. Chairman of Cricket PNG, Mr Mick Nades stated that �the efforts of all of the staff, volunteers, sponsors have made this Event a huge success and we will run it again next year�. �We thank EMTV for the live broadcast and FM100 as well as Pacific MMI, Motor Vehicles Insurance Limited for their significant commercial support and the belief they showed in Cricket. � �Today we have seen cricket as a family sport and why our Teams are the most successful International teams in PNG�, stated Mr Nades. �We have lots of kids, excitement, no alcohol, no violence, an excited crowd, Live TV and Radio coverage and fantastic local talent� beamed Mr Nades. National Coach, Andy Bichel announced National Opening Batsmen Kapena Arua as the player of the Tournament and presented him with a Slazenger Kit of Gear valued at over K1500. Andy Bichel thanked all of the Legends for coming to PNG but also reminded everyone that our Local talent is exceptional but we need to continue the hard work being put in and not get lazy or complacent. He also encouraged players from outside of Moresby to shine so that we grow the sport throughout the country. Local Best Performances over the weekend:

Cook Islands launch Community Outreach Program Cook Islands Cricket coaches were out and about introducing the crew from the Cook Islands Creative Centre to the game that is sweeping the nation.

The programme is part of Cook Islands Crickets� Community Outreach Programme which brings cricket to community groups across Rarotonga. Lead cricket coach Shane Thompson said, �Cricket in the Cook Islands is a totally inclusive sport which offers opportunities and excitement to all who wish to be involved no matter what challenges they may face�. There is plenty more to look forward to as General Manager Alister Stevic commented, �The programme will also involve the hearing and sight impaired with future initiatives to establish Island teams to compete in national tournaments.�

Vanuatu Cricket involved in Stop HIV Campaign A Stop HIV Champions Trainign Programme has been launched in Port Vila, with several sporting stars taking part. The facilitators are ONOC STOP HIV Coordinator, Ms Joanna Ferris and Pacific 400m Gold Medallists and Fiji STOP HIV Champion, Jone Wainiqolo. The Trainings were opened by Mr Fatani Sope, VASANOC Board Member responsible for Provincial Development and also Chairman of the National Games Council. Identified STOP HIV Champions for Vanuatu and the Vanuatu Sports Development Unit based in VASANOC are the participants in this training. The participants were fortunate to have Ms Irene Malachi and Wan Smol Bag Trainers participate in the trainings. The Vanuatu STOP HIV Champions are Table-Tennis Star, Anolyn Lulu, Athletics Star, Moses Kamut, Beach Volleyball Star, Henriette Iatika and Cricket star, Andrew Mansale. Cricket PNG and Brian Bell initiate �Future Stars� Scholarship Program Cricket PNG is implementing a young player development program for boys and girls to deliver on our international aspirations for the future. Talent is identified through the Esco U16 National Championships and the Belltek U13 national Championships. The development of the Emerging Stars program is the critical step to developing our future players so that we can compete at higher levels of international competition with greater success. The Emerging Stars Scholarship program is a full school scholarship which takes 12 Boys and 12 Girls from anywhere in PNG and puts them into school in Port Moresby for School and Cricket education. The program includes a full time Teacher to supervise and a �live-in� Coach to be dedicated to daily training, playing, educational and development activities which will create a young athlete who can readily compete on the international stage. Importantly this program will change �Lives� and create opportunities that �no other sporting code has ever attempted in PNG.� remarked Bill Leane, GM Cricket PNG, �This program fulfils childhood dreams�, he said.

The Brian Bell �Future Stars� Scholarship Program is a tightly controlled cricket Scholarship for PNG�s Elite National players. It is a critical part of developing International players for PNG to compete on the world stage. The Future Stars program takes athletes with potential and develops:

1. Cricketing skills in Premier domestic competitions in Australia and NZ. 2. Creates new life skills through travel and exposure to different cultures 3. Provides a competitive environment for each athlete to excel 4. Links our Best local talent with highly skilled professionals and experts 5. Exposes PNG�s �Future Stars� to BEST practise training techniques 6. Develops transferable skills to help develop others in PNG 7. Creates a pathway for talented cricketer�s to play in International competition and create opportunities like Sheffield Shield, KFC Big Bash, IPL and Champions

League for the future.
