Hebburn was very different back in 1912, the year the football club was formed. The collieries that had changed it from a small

agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employ-ment of 1,864 men; the shipyards launched by An-drew Leslie were in full vigour; and the town, eleven years earlier, had welcomed a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle.

Reyrolle opened an engineering works, which initially employed just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak, Rey-rolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures, and export to 70 countries being known worldwide.

The company also started a football team, and, en-couraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn his-tory, he provided the sports ground on which team still plays on in the Northern League. The football team formed in 1912 were elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League.

There had been plenty of football teams in the before 1912, most notably Hebburn Argyle – who kicked off in 1882 by Father Toner, the priest at St Aloy-sius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derby games with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000. The Geordie town also had shinty and curling clubs and even an annual Highland Games which was organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society.

This 1912 team progressed, and flourished in the 1930s, followed by a wartime season in the North

Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and then returned to the Northern Combi-nation where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles as we were still known as, had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points.

The Tyneside club then had 28 pretty indifferent seasons in the Wearside League, though they won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968.

In 1988 the name was changed to Hebburn and an application was made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promo-tion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy.

The ground was improved, other clubs canvassed and then Hebburn got a lucky break when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding to play elsewhere.

The team which had finished fifth in the Wearside League and then played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, before winning promotion and the Dur-ham Challenge Cup in 1992 before being relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. The club then won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000.

In the 2011-12 season, Hebburn Town reached the FA Cup fourth qualifying round and a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places. This was the club’s furthest ever run in the competition and the Hornets also secured promotion to the Northern League Division 1 for their centenary year.

We would like to extend a very warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters from Ashington and hope

they have a pleasant evening on South Tyneside. In particular a warm welcome to Gary Middleton following his problems earlier in the season and we all hope he has now fully recovered.

The Colliers have a long, proud, and distin-guished history, and just the

mention of Ashington brings very fond memories of the Charlton and Mil-burn family foot-balling dynasties along with other famous footbal-lers like Jimmy Adamson.

Although they’ve enjoyed happy

times in the

Northern League we must not forget Ashington’s vast experience in the Football League, Midland League, North Eastern League and Northern Pre-mier League.

At present they are lying in sixth place in the league with 49 points. We drew with the Colliers 1-1 at their new ground earlier in the season and anticipate another hard match tonight. We need to secure all three points as the positions in the bottom half of the league are becoming tighter and tighter. The weather is not helping with the majority of games postponed last Saturday and even when game are being played, the grounds are generally at saturation point and playing conditions are extremely difficult. The fixtures backlog is becoming a real headache.

We also extend a warm welcome to our three match officials for this evening’s game and wish them an incident free match.

Of course, everyone is welcome to join us in the club house after the game for a gargle and a healthy exchange of opinions on the match.

Hello all,

I hope everyone is well and you’ve enjoyed your weekend off. We were quite disappointed with our game being off at RCA as we feel we were ready after a decent performance against Dunston, but the weather seems as unpredicatbale as our performances these days.

I’d like to welcome all officials, players and fans from Ashington, I hope you all enjoy your visit to Heb-burn, and have all wrapped up warm.

Ashington pose a big threat as they have some excel-lent individuals. I have played with a few of the lads, such as Walton and Dugdale, so know what damage they can do. They have a top manager in Gary Mid-dleton who has turned them into a side comfortably finishing in the top ten of the league every season. We drew 1-1 in the first fixture after an excellent finish by Kirky, and I think we could have pushed on to win the game, though a draw was maybe fair on the day.

We now have a tough run in, with some very hard games to come, but our lads are bang up for the challenge, and I can’t wait to see how we fare against them. We have brought young Ryan Page in to bolster our defence and I am sure he will blossom in the Hebburn shirt.

ANDY DUGDALEDefensive midfielder who brings a wealth of Northern League experience to a young Ashington side. Tough in the tackle and comfortable on the ball, Dugdale won the Northern League most recently with Benfield. Also formerly of Whitley Bay and Bedlington Terriers.

JONATHAN GODSMARKSkilful attacker with bags of pace. Another of the ex-Magpies who joined the Colliers at the start of last term. Godsmark terrified Northern League defences last season from the right hand side or when played up top.

PAUL ANTHONYExperienced midfielder who’s former clubs include Carlisle Utd, Newry Town, Gateshead, Team Northumbria and Benfield. Scored a sensational winner for Benfield against Ashington last season.

MARK O’DEACultured central midfielder who joined the club from Brandon United two seasons ago. Excellent at breaking down the play and laying in defence splitting passes for alert attackers. Previous clubs include Brandon United and Arnold Town.

GARETH BAINBRIDGEStriker who has been hampered by injury over the past few cam-paigns. A natural goalscorer who

has been on fire in pre season and hopefully continues in the same vein. Finished as Ashington’s top goalscorer in the first season at Woodhorn Lane having scored the first goal at the new ground.

PHIL BELLStriker returned to Woodhorn Lane in November 2011 signing from Whitley Bay for the second time in a year. Scored 16 goals for the Colliers in the 2010/11 season including a brace at New Mills in the FA Vase Second Round tie which saw him come off the bench and change for course of the game as the Colliers won 4-2. Returned to Hillheads in the close season but rejoined the Colliers as part of a deal which saw Chris Fawcett return to Whitley Bay.

MARC WALTONStriker signed from Consett in December 2011. Previously with Newcastle United as a junior. Also had spells with Torquay Utd, Newcastle Blue Star, Newcastle Benfield, Blyth Spartans and Durham City.

GLEN TAYLORPopular young striker who began his senior career at Ashington. Glen left to sign for Whitley Bay, then moving to Blyth Spartans and most recently Spennymoor, before returning to Woodhorn Lane in January 2013.

GARYMIDDLETON

Gary took over as Ashington manager in the summer of 2009, making the move from West Allotment Celtic, and took Ashington to two Cup Finals and a top 6 League position in his first season at Woodhorn Lane. ‘Middler’ has years and years of expe-rience in local football and had a very successful playing career, captaining Whitley Bay to FA Vase glory in 2002, playing at Wembley with Bedlington Terriers and playing in the UniBond League with Blyth Spartans. Also played for Ashington towards the end of his play-ing days. Currently manages the Hirst Welfare Football Centre, as well as working with New-castle United.

A town of just 27,000 people in England’s least densely populated county, Ashington has long punched above its weight when it comes

to global sporting success. The Charlton broth-ers won a World Cup with England and European trophies with Leeds and Manchester United, Jackie Milburn jet-propelled Newcastle United to three FA Cups, Jimmy Adamson captained Burnley to Wemb-ley victory and a league title, and Steve Harmison, a teenage footballer at his hometown club, became, for a time, the cricketing world’s deadliest fast bowler.

Formed in 1883, Ashington were among the twenty founder members of the Third Division North in 1921, the year that player-coach and ex-Manchester United skipper Patrick O’Connell lifted the club’s first Northumberland Senior Cup. O’Connell left for Spain at the end of the season, coaching at Santander, Oviedo, Sevilla and Barcelona, and taking Real Betis to the 1935 La Liga title. The Colliers went on to finish eighth in 1923-24 and reached the FA Cup third round in 1927. Two years later, with the club’s coffers hard hit by a miners’ strike, they slumped to last place and were voted out of the league in favour of York City.

Spells in the North Eastern, Midland – where they finished runners-up to Peterborough United - North-ern Premier and Northern Alliance Leagues followed, over 13,000 turning out for an FA Cup second round tie with Rochdale in December 1950. After joining the Northern League in 1970, the Colliers, with Harmison’s father, Jimmy, a stalwart in the centre of defence and Brian Pringle a prolific scorer up front, narrowly missed out on the 1974 FA Amateur Cup final, losing in a semi-final replay to eventual winners Bishop’s Stortford.

Times have been leaner since. There was a ninth Nor-thumberland Senior Cup win in 1980, Division Two titles in 2001 and 2004 and a pair of Ernest Armstrong

Cups, but along the way Portland Park, Ashington’s home since 1907, was demolished, its final game at-tracting nigh on 2,000 fans in early 2008. Sadly, there’s no truth in the urban legend that the site of one of the penalty spots has been marked for posterity in the Asda supermarket which now occupies the land. While Woodhorn Lane is yet to witness any additions to the club’s trophy cabinet, the Colliers made the finals of the Northern Senior and Northern League Cups in 2010, losing out to Whitley Bay and South Shields.

In November 2011, of course, Ashington joined Heb-burn Town as Northern League representatives in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup. While the Hornets were losing at Gateshead, the Colliers went out to Grimsby Town, who, in one of those strange co-incidences that the game occasionally throws up, were their first ever Football League opponents back in 1921.

On and off the pitch, it’s a history to be proud of.

In the absence of Andy Hudson, I’m delighted to have been afforded the

chance to pen a few words for the programme, especially as this evening’s opponents Ashington are the side I first followed when I was bitten by the Northern League bug. I’m at the game this evening, so if you’d like your copy auto-graphed, don’t be shy; I do carry a pen!

My interest in non-league football was sparked in the mid-90s, partly by a growing revulsion with the Premier League and partly by read-ing Harry Pearson’s mag-nificent book about football in the north east, The Far Corner, which inspired me to complete my Northern League “set” in double quick time. The first game I saw at Hebburn was a 2-0 defeat by South Shields on 7 October 1995; I trust I won’t bring such bad luck tonight,

especially as the last game I saw involving the Hornets was the 5-0 loss at Whitley Bay, which I spent in the company of a certain Harry Pearson.

It seems hard to believe it is 5 years since Ashington vacated their wonderful old Portland Park ground. I fell in love with the place when I first visited for a 5-2 win over Shotton Comrades on 15 Jan-uary 1996. Until 2004, when geographical and personal circumstances meant I trans-ferred my Northern League affections to Benfield, I wrote for Ashington’s legendary fanzine Pit Pony Express, held a season ticket, was a spectacularly unsuccessful Commercial Manager and exhorted the Collier Choir to chant in Slovak at games (it’s a long story). All the best to both sides.

Over the last three years, Hebburn Town have been fortunate to have the services of for-ward player Stuart Nicholson. The 26-year-

old has had an impressive run with the club since initially joining from Birtley Town in October 2010.

Nicholson spent his youth football career with West Bromwich Albion, where he was also part of the international set-up as a member of England’s U19 squad where he excelled.

Eventually he would make his first team debut in January 2006 in the FA Cup against Reading and then Nicholson made his Premier League bow four days later against Sunderland where he replaced his childhood hero Nathan Ellington – by the end of the season he was named Young Player of the Year for the Baggies.

Looking back at this time, Nicholson remembers: “I can’t describe the feeling exactly. The Reading fans were chanting “who are you?” when I came off the bench. I had to keep pinching myself when the ball was out of play and I kept asking myself if this was all real.

“My Premier League debut was by far the best feeling in the world. I’m a Geordie playing against Sunderland and the Sky cameras were there. It could have been better as we lost 1-0, but no one can take away the fact I have played in the best league in the world and I loved every minute of it.”

“When I called up for England I was sent a let-ter from The FA saying I was selected but I was on stand-by. Theo Walcott was in the squad and later that day Theo got called up to to the senior squad for the 2006 World Cup. I half expected the call and when I got it I was speechless. My mam was in tears on the phone and telling all the family.

“I remember my first training session. I felt so out of place. Players like Joe Hart, Micah Richards and Adam Johnson, to name a few, and I was rubbing

shoulders with them; I was so nervous. We played the first game against Belgium and I came on off the bench and did really well. After that game, and for the rest of the week, I was the team joker. I found my feet and kept the lads on their toes.

“The Serbia game sticks out the most as we had to get at least a point to qualify and ended up losing 1-0. I created two great chances for Joe Garner – I’ll always remember them – and he blazed over. If one of the chances went in we were on our way to Portu-gal for the Euros but it wasn’t to be.”

Now on his third spell with the club, having re-joined during the Australian post-season where he played as a professional for Moreland Zebras, Nich-olson has been an integral member of the team over the past three years at the Hebburn Sports Ground.

A very highly-rated defender, Martyn was previously at Bedlington before a three year spell on the sidelines after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament and tearing the cartilage in his knee.

A rapid winger and a graduate of Nottingham Trent University, James played for his Uni during his student days before signing for North Shields on his return to the north-east. After a num-ber of stand-out appearances for The Robins, James moved to Hebburn Town at the start of the 2012-13 season.

Former club: Durham City

Composed player who is comfortable playing at full-back and in midfield. After spending a year at Yavapai in Arizona on a football scholarship, Andy moved back to the north-east and signed for Durham City before signing for Hebburn Town in November 2012.

Stuart Nicholson FORWARD


Former club: Moreland Zebras

Ex-England U19 star who made his Premier League debut for West Brom away against Sunderland a week after his pro-fessional debut in FA Cup against Reading. The childhood Bristol Rovers fan then signed on loan for The Gas. Stuart is in his third spell with the club in between playing profes-sionally in Australia.

A former WBA midfielder, Dean has been an inte-gral member of the squad since October 2010. Hebburn’s current longest serving player, he replaced Andrew Wood in the dugout during the 2011-12 season after suffering from a long term injury and started the 2012-13 campaign as Player/Assistant Manager.

Tony Stephenson FORWARD

Former club: Dunston UTS

Having joined the club as a centre forward, Tony has proved equally comfortable and capable playing on the left-wing and

terrorising opposition right-backs with his trickery. A com-mitted player and fine finisher, Tony was a regular scorer during the 2011-12 promotion winning season.

After ten years as a goalkeeper with Newcastle Blue

Star, Benno moved into management in the Northern

Alliance before moving into the Northern League at

West Allotment Celtic and immediately taking them

to the top of Division 1. A move to Hebburn Town

in October 2010 followed and since then Benno has

enjoyed success by taking the club to an FA Cup 4Q

Round appearance and then promotion from Division 2

in his first full season in charge.

Shaunagh joined Hebburn Town at the start of the 2012-13 season after achieving a 2:1 in her Bsc (hons) degree in Physiotherapy at Teesside University.

Born in 1990 and growing up in Fulwell, Shaunagh is awaiting full-time work within the NHS, but helps out at events such as the Great North Run with sports massages on athletes.

This is Shaunagh’s first role in football and as well as being of great experience to her in dealing with sports injuries, she’s been a great asset to the club as she embarks on what should be a great

career in her profession.
