Дорогі возлюблені у Христі браття і сестри

Христос Родився! Славіте Його!

“Небо і земля нині торжествують, ангели й люди весело празнують“ співаємо в коляді на Свято Різдва Христового і знову радіємо радістю Різдвяних свят. Новонароджений Син Божий приносить радість і утішення всім українцям, які проживають в Україні і тим що проживають поза її межами по цілому світі і всім людям доброї волі. Христос – Месія стає для нас початком нового життя і вісником спасіння. І вся велика Українська родина буде величати Новонародженого Ісуса і МОЛИТИ його за любов та злагоду між нами, благополуччя і мир у світі, взаємоповагу і порозуміння.

Молитва про єдність у Христі говориться з особливою радістю та натхненням сьогодні, коли тільки декілька днів назад на Всеукраїнському Об’єднавчому соборі 15 грудня у Києві здійснилась багатовікова мрія народу України про створення Єдиної Помісної Незалежної церкви в Україні. Господь показав свою мудрість та вилив милосердя і відповів на молитви та сподівання поколінь українців, котрі молились за свою духовну незалежність та церкву. Мрія здійснилась, молитви сповнились, тож ставаймо сьогодні всі разом, всі люди доброї волі на шляху до оновлення у новонародженому Христі.

І, ми, діти народу України, по всіх закутках світу урочисто, згідно з древніми традиціями, які нам передали діди і прадіди, будемо святкувати Різдво Христове. B кожній хаті засвітиться різдвяна свічка і освітить святочний стіл з дванадцятьма пісними стравами. І до цього столу зійдуться рідні і будуть згадувати велику минувшину українських різдвяних звичаїв і, унікальну для кожної родини і місцевості, вчити своїх дітей і онуків, щоб вони продовжували ці звичаї у майбутньому. Різдво є родинним святом для кожного особисто, адже за різдвяним столом збираються всі покоління: бабуся і дідусь, батько й мати, діти і внуки – збираються, щоб відчути родинне тепло.

В цей радісний і світлий різдвяний час вітаю всіх Вас зі святами і бажаю Вам і родинам Вашим веселих свят Різдва Христового і щасливого Нового Року. Щоб ці святочні дні дали Вам натхнення і наснагу далі молитись для свого спасіння, наснагу працювати на українській ниві і щоб милосердний Господь обдаровував Вас Своїм милосердям. Нехай Дитятко, яке народилося у Вифлеємі більше як дві тисячі років тому, надалі благословляє нашу дорогу матір - Україну та її новостворену Помісну Церкву і всіх її дітей по всьому світу сущих. А також і зичимо миру та милосердя, злагоди і Божої Ласки всім людям доброї волі у всьому світі.

Особлива подяка всім волонтерам нашої парафії за важку і натхненну працю на благо громади, а особливо нашому жіноцтву, адже без вашої жертовної праці нічого в громаді не могло б зрушитися з місця. Працюючи разом ми набуваємо відчуття справжньої християнської родини, де кожен, хто переступає поріг нашого храму для молитви, стає нашим собратом у Христі.

Наш нарід завше визначався своєю жертвенністю і відгуки на кампанії збірки засобів для нашої громади завше були дуже плодоносними і віддзеркалювали найкращі риси нашого народу. Тож сердечна подяка всім нашим щирим жертводавцям, як особам так і установам, за вашу жертвенність і надіємось на Вашу благородну підтримку і в майбутньому. З радістю розділяю з Вами, що наступні етапи іконографії, спонсорована нашим жіноцтвом і жертводавцями, будуть закінчені з Божої ласки вже на початку травня 2019 року. Докладімо ж зусиль, щоб наша духовна спадщина процвітала та зростала з унікальною іконографією у нашім храмі – принесімо пожертви на цей важливий проект. Також, 2019 рік буде заключним роком святкування століття Української Православної Церкви в Канаді, тож прошу Вас всіх номінувати достойних членів нашої громади до почесної нагороди Св. Андрея.

Ми молимося, щоб у житті нашої громади всі неропорозуміння полагоджувалися у мирі та любові і ми могли навчатися не повторювати наших помилок, а дружно будувати нашу громаду. Щоб мати майбутнє, наша громада повинна стати пристановищем для нових ідей і думок, щоб ми могли вчасно відповідати на виклики часу. Час закликає нас до змін, а сьогоднішнє суспільство дає нам виклики які вимагають серйозного переосмислення і нагальної відповіді. Ми молимося за те, що наші храми мали присутність віруючих на Богослуженнях під час тижня, адже ці богослуження є для поглиблення нашої віри і для причастя Тіла і Крові Спасителя на наше життя вічне і спасіння.

Проте нашою найпалкішою молитвою є молитва за те, щоб кожен прихожанин чи парафіянин чи відвідувач нашої громади знаходив душевний притулок у нашій церкві, де можна відкласти всі ‘душевні піклування' і молитовно поєднатися з Господом, де кожен віруючий почуває себе частиною єдиної християнської родини – громади Успіння Пресвятої Богородиці у Оттаві. Молімося і святкуймо разом 70-е ліття нашої громади в осені 2019 — і передаваймо нашу духовну спадщину наступним поколінням. У новонародженім Христі Ісусі, о. Ігор з родиною

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM OUR PARISH PRIEST

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

CHRIST IS BORN! LET US GLORIFY HIM!

“Heaven and earth rejoice today, angels and people celebrate” – these words we sing in a Ukrainian Christmas carol as we celebrate the Nativity of Our Christ and again we rejoice about the Christmas holy days. The newborn Son of God brings joy and comfort to all Ukrainians living in Ukraine and those living in other regions of the world and to all people of good will. Christ - the Messiah becomes for us the beginning of a new life and a messenger of salvation. And the whole great Ukrainian family will glorify the newborn Jesus and pray to him for love and harmony between us, prosperity and peace in the world, mutual respect and understanding. The prayer of unity in Christ speaks with particular joy and inspiration this Christmas season, especially since on December 15 in Kyiv, a long-held dream of the people of Ukraine for the creation of the independent Church in Ukraine was realized. The Lord showed his wisdom and bestowed mercy by responding to the prayers and hopes of generations of Ukrainians who prayed for their spiritual independence and church. The dream was fulfilled, the prayers were answered, so let us all people of good will proceed on the road to renewal in the newborn Christ.

And, we, the children of the people of Ukraine living in all parts of the world, will solemnly celebrate Christmas, according to the ancient traditions handed down to us by our ancestors. In each home a Christmas candle will illuminate the Christmas table with its twelve Lenten dishes. And all relatives will come to this table and will remember the great past of Ukrainian Christmas customs, unique to each family and locality, and will teach their children and grandchildren to cherish and continue these traditions in the future. Christmas is a holiday with many generations gathered at the Christmas table surrounded by the

warmth of family love. At this joyful Christmas time, I greet you all and wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a

Happy New Year. May these holy days give you inspiration to pray for your salvation, to work for Ukrainians everywhere, and may our loving Lord bless you with His mercy. May the newborn Christ, born in Bethlehem more than two thousand years ago, continue to bless our dear mother Ukraine and her newly established independent Church and all her children around the world. And also we hope for peace and mercy, and for God's love for all the people of good will all over the world.

I especially wish to thank all the volunteers for their inspiring work for the benefit of the parish and Ottawa’s Ukrainian community, and especially to our parish’s Ladies’ Group for your dedication and sacrifice that raises funds for many projects. Working together we experience a sense of a true Christian family, where everyone who crosses the threshold of our church in prayer becomes our fellow in Christ.

Through their sacrifice of time and efforts and donations to fundraising campaigns our parish reflects the best traits of people. We are sincerely grateful to all our generous donors, both individuals and organizations, for your continued support in the future. We look to you all to kindly donate to our annual KOLIADA campaign during the Christmas season. We pray that the 70th anniversary of our parish in 2019, which begins with the celebration of the Nativity of Christ, will give us the opportunity to glorify our Saviour's constant prayers in good health, and to work hard to support our church which represents Ukrainian Orthodoxy in our nation’s capital. May all our endeavors be supported with God's blessings and be successful for the good of our community and our salvation. I am glad to report that the next phases of iconography, sponsored by our Ladies’ Group and many donors, will be completed with God's mercy in early May 2019. We will do our best to ensure that our spiritual heritage flourishes and grows with unique iconography in our church. We continue to accept donations to this very important project. Also, 2019 will be the final year of celebration of the centennial of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canada. Therefore, please nominate worthy members of our parish for the special honorary award of St. Andrew. We pray that, in the life of our parish community, any misunderstandings be reconciled in peace and love, and that we learn not to repeat our mistakes, but to build our community together. In order to have a future, our community should become a haven for new ideas and thoughts so that we can timely respond to the challenges of our times. Changes in today's society present us with challenges that require us to seriously think about our solutions. We pray for the fact that our churches are attended by worshippers at the Divine Liturgy during the week, because these services allow our faith to deepen and for the communion of the Body and Blood of the Savior to grant us our eternal life and salvation. Our fervent prayer is to pray that every member, parishioner or visitor to our church find a spiritual haven where it is possible to cast aside all their worries and together in prayer unite with the Lord, where every believer feels part of a single Christian family - the community of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Ottawa. In the fall of 2019, we will pray and celebrate together the 70th anniversary of our parish and pass along our spiritual heritage to the next generations. Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Fr. PІЗДВЯНИЙ ПРИВІТ ВІД ГОЛОВИ ПАРАФІЯЛЬНОЇ УПРАВИ

Дорогі члени та прихожанини Собору

Христос Рождається! Славіте Його!

Цього року ми відзначили дві головні події – перше, сторіччя Української Православної Церкви в Канаді, і друге, створення самостійної Української Православної Церкви в Україні відлучена від Московського Патріархату. Обидві ці ювілеї слідують 125-у річницю першого українського поселення в Канаді яку було відзначене в 2017 році та 69-у річницю створення нашої парафії в Оттаві. Як єдина українська православна церква в Оттаві, ми продовжуємо відігравати особливу ролю і зобов'язані представляти українську канадську громаду перед державним урядом, особливо в світлі поточних конфліктів в Україні. Мені приємно поділитись, що члени та друзі нашої церкви активно підтримували поранених українських солдатів, лікарню в Дніпропетровськ та дитячий будинок сиротин у Кривому Розі під час року.

Минулий рік був зайнятий для парафіяльної ради. Частина його діяльності включала оновлення оригінальних церковних законів 1967-ого року (для виконання вимог законодавства, страхування та консисторії) та продовження громадських, політичних та культурних подій, спрямованих на зміцнення української православної громади в Оттаві, включаючи участь у дуже успішним річним українським фестивалі у липні в Оттаві. Я хотів би подякувати всім тим, хто зробив свій внесок у успішне виконання всіх цих та інших церковних подій.

Ми щасливі що маємо гарну церковну залю в центральним, легко доступним місці, яка є заздрість багатьох інших парафій. Наша церковна заля заробляє понад 55% нашого річного бюджету. Тому підтримка нашої залі у хорошому стані дуже важлива для фінансової стабільності нашої церкви. Велика подяка Тетяни Зубаревій, адміністраторові винаймання залу, а також Миколі та Ірені Царковницьким за їхні невтомні зусилля, щоб наш зал та церква були чистими та презентабельними.

Дякуємо також усім тим, хто присвятив свій час, фінансову підтримку та енергію, щоб допомогти нам зберегти парафію фінансово здоровою та активною. Це означало, що парафія матиме невеликий фінансовий надлишок цього року, подібний до минулого року.

Характер нашої церкви змінюється – молодше, активніше зі зростаючим членством парафіян з України. Це буде наше майбутнє. Ми повинні продовжувати звертатися до них, багато яких не учащали церкву або не брали участь у культурній діяльності в громадах на Україні. Вітаємо їхні ідеї в цьому відношенні.

Нарешті, від імені парафіяльної ради я хотів би висловити нашу подяку Отцеві Ігореві за його духовне провідництво та здатність працювати з нашими новими канадійцями з України, які є майбутнім нашої церкви. Dear Members and Friends of the Cathedral

CHRIST IS BORN! LET US GLORIFY HIM!

This year we celebrated major milestones for both the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada which celebrated the 100th anniversary of its establishment in Canada and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Ukraine for having broken the chains of the Moscow Patriarchate. Both of these follow the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada in 2017 and the 69th anniversary of the establishment of our church in Ottawa in 1949 largely by young Ukrainians escaping Soviet and Nazi oppression. As the only Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Ottawa we continue to play a special role and have the obligation to represent the Ukrainian Canadian community before the federal government and its Ministers, particularly in light of the current conflicts in Ukraine. I am pleased to say that the members and friends of the church have been active in supporting wounded Ukrainian solders, a hospital in Dnipropetrovsk and an orphanage in Kryvyj Rih over the past year.

The past year has been a busy one for the parish council. Some of its activities have included the updating of the original 1967 church bylaws (to comply with legal, insurance and Consistory requirements) and continued social, political and cultural activities aimed at strengthening the Ukrainian Orthodox community in Ottawa including participation in the very successful Capital Ukrainian Festival in July in Ottawa. I would like to thank all of those who contributed to making all of these and other church activities successful.

We are blessed with excellent facilities (our church hall) in a central easily accessible location that is the envy of many other parishes. Our church hall generates over 55% of the parish's annual budget. Therefore, maintaining our facilities in good condition is very important to the financial stability of our church. Much thanks belongs to Tatiana Zoubareva, our hall rental administrator, for continuing hall rentals this year and to Mykola and Irena Tsarkovnysky for their tireless efforts in keeping our hall and church clean and presentable.

Thanks also to all of those that contributed their time, financial support and energy to help us keep the parish financially sound and active. This has meant that the parish will have a small financial surplus this year similar to last year.

The face of our church is changing – younger, more active with a growing membership of parishioners from Ukraine. This will be our future. We must continue to reach out to them as many did not attend church or participate in cultural activities in Ukraine. Your ideas in this regard are welcome.

Lastly, on behalf of myself and other members of the parish council I would like to extend our gratitude to Father Ihor for his spiritual leadership and ability to reach our to new Ukrainian Canadians who are the future of our church. A final thanks also to Dobrodika Jennifer for her support of Fr. CHRIST IS BORN! GLORIFY HIM! Our parish’s Ladies’ association is very proud to announce that the Christmas bazaar in November was a success. The whole community played a part to ensure its success. Everyone enjoyed the music that Patricia Moise and Beverly Popyk played. The public really enjoys coming to our bazaars for they love the atmosphere and the time to relax and enjoy each other’s company.

The Ladies truly appreciate all the help they received from volunteers in preparing the food and setting up for parish events. All their help, time and effort make for successful events which financially support our church.

Thank you to all for your valuable help throughout the year. May the good Lord bring good health, a

very blessed Christmas and a Happy New year.

2019 MEMBERSHIP FEES

We encourage worshippers to become a registered member of the parish by completing a Membership Application and paying the annual fees. For first-time members, a special membership rate of $2 per person per year will be applied. All baptized individuals who actively confess the Orthodox Christian faith are members of the Orthodox Church. Individuals who register as members of our parish can participate in and vote at parish meetings, participate on the parish council, and benefit from special discounts on hall rental, special religious services and cemetery plots.

The fees for 2019, covering the 12-month period from January 1 to December 31, are as follows:

A portion of these fees, $35 from each single membership and $70 from each family membership, remains with our parish to help pay our operating expenses. The remainder of the fees supports the work of the Consistory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada (UOCC) and St. Andrew’s College (the post-secondary academic institution that trains Ukrainian Orthodox priests), both located in Winnipeg, and the Eastern Eparchy located in Toronto. REPORT on PROPERTY MAINTENANCE

The church, hall, manse and the grounds are always requiring attention. Below are some recent maintenance items that have been attended to:

The Manse In mid-summer, a major job to replace most of the valves on the radiators in the manse. (The existing

valves were non-functioning.) The effort took about four days with some follow-ups required to tweak the system when the weather started to get cold. The manse heating system is now running well in steady state.

The Grounds Our lawnmower came to the end of its useful life and a replacement was procured. The southeast corner of our parking lot needs attention as our fence piles were starting to tilt. (Ongoing

work) Fence-line vegetation control continues to be an ongoing effort.

The Hall Windows on the north side of the main (lower level) hall were replaced with new (frosted) windows. A minor floor tile repair was performed at the entrance from the front foyer to the main hall. Automatic door closers were repaired or replaced on the doors leading from the front foyer to the main

hall and to the men’s washroom.

Heating system: A booster pump was recently replaced on boiler #1 of the three boilers. This should improve the heating stability in the hall and front foyer area.

Hall painting: The wood trim has been restained and the lower portion of the wall has been painted in the main hall.

The Church A non-functioning heating radiator was repaired and is now operating properly.

ХРАМОВЕ СВЯТО 2018 В суботу 29-го та в неділю 30-го вересня наша парафія святкували cвоє річне Храмове Свято та 69-е

річчя заснування разом з урочистим святкуванням сторіччя Української Православної Церкви в Канаді. У суботу, 29 вересня, відбулися презентації різних богословських тематик: о. Максим Лисак говорив про Християнство як смерть релігії, о. Роман Ритцар розповів про П'ять Речей Кожен Християнин Повинен Знати, а Його Високопреосвященство Митрополит Юрій розповів про історичний аналіз автокефалії церкви в Україні. Вечірню співали дуже молитовно квартет з Української Православної Церкви Св. Дмитрія (Етобіко, ОН). Після вечірні відбулося прийняття та концерт з українським співом в церковній залі. Під час прийняття музична група Сайлент Винтер (Тиха Зима) виконала декілька пісень із свого нового вокального альбому під назвою "Дюк Готель", присвячену історії сім'ї Решітник, які приїхали до Канади перед та після другої світової війни та були власниками готелю Дюк в Оттаві. Сотні імігрантів після другої світової війни знайшли свій перший дім у готелі Дюк. Після виступу Сайлент Винтер, квартет Св. Дмитрія розпочав енергійний спільний спів українських народних пісень. Святкування та добре товариство тривали до 10-ої години вечором.

У неділю, 30 вересня, Архиєрейське Богослуження було відслужено Його Преосвященним Митрополитом Юрієм. Святкування продовжувалося з святковим обідом та програмою в церковній залі. Обід був прекрасно підготовлений командою волонтерів з нашої парафії. Пожертви, на загальну суму понад $4500, були дуже щедрими в дусі святкування. Під час програми були привітання від інших парафій та гостей. Митрополит Юрій нагородив почесну Грамоту наші довго літні членкині Зорі Джексон. В честь сторіччя Української Православної Церкви в Канаді відбувся концерт де виступали цимбалист Роман Тикайло, квартет Св. Дмитрія та жіноча група Коліжанки. Щиро дякую всім, хто щедро і невтомно працював, щоб організувати це свято для Слави Бога і нашого спасіння. Щиро дякуємо всім нашим друзям з парафії Св. Дмитрія. Нехай Бог благословить вас і всіх нас.

PARISH FEAST DAY 2018 On September 29 and 30 we celebrated our annual Parish Feast Day and the 69th anniversary of our

founding with festivities including a celebration of the centennial of Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada. On Saturday, September 29, there were presentations on various theological topics that were met with a great degree of interest: Fr. Maxym Lysack spoke about Christianity as Death of Religion, Fr. Roman Rytsar spoke about Five Things Every Christian Should Know, and His Eminence Metropolitan Yurij spoke about the historical analysis of the autocephaly (independence) of the church in Ukraine. Evening Vespers were sung very prayerfully by the quartet from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Demetrius (Etobicoke, ON). After evening Vespers there was a Wine and Cheese reception and a concert with a Ukrainian sing-along. During the reception, the musical group Silent Winter performed a few songs from their new vocal album titled "Duke Hotel" which is dedicated to the history of the Reshitnyk family who came to Canada before and after

World War II and were the owners of Duke Hotel in Ottawa. Hundreds of post-World War II immigrants found their first home in the Duke Hotel. Following Silent Winter’s performance the St. Demetrius choir initiated an energizing sing-along of Ukrainian folk songs. Festivities and good fellowship lasted until 10 pm.

On Sunday, September 30, the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was celebrated and presided by His Eminence Metropolitan Yurij. The celebration continued with a festive lunch and concert program in the church hall. The lunch was prepared by a wonderful team of volunteers from our parish. Donations, totalling over $4500, were very generous in the spirit of celebration. During the program, greetings from the chairs of other parish organizations, visiting dignitaries and guests were offered. Metropolitan Yurij presented a honorary Hramota (certificate) to our long time parish member Zora Jackson. Finally, to honour the centennial of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, a concert by various artists – dulcimer player Roman Tykajlo, the St. Demetrius Quartet and women’s folklore vocal ensemble Kolizhanky – was enjoyed by everyone in attendance. A sincere thank you to everyone who contributed generously and worked tirelessly to organize the celebration for the Glory of God and our salvation. Also, a heartfelt thank you to our wonderful friends from St. Demetrius parish. God bless you and all of us.

РІЗДВЯНИЙ БАЗАР 2018 У неділю, 18 листопада, наша парафіялна жіноча організація (Союз Українок Канади – Оттавський

відділ) провела щорічний різдвяний базар, на якому успішно зароблено близько $6000 на підтримку наших парафіяльних проектів. Щорічно різдвяний базар у листопаді та весняний базар у березні/квітні заробляють значні кошти на підтримку фінансових потреб нашої парафії. Як і в минулих роках, прихильність, час та зусилля багатьох добровольців допомогли щоб базар був дуже успішним. В тижнях перед базаром команди підготувала 3000 вареників, 500 голубців, 100 літрів борщу, та багато макових та морквяних тортів. Як завжди, найпопулярнішими виявилися столи з печевом та готовою їжою і горячий обід. Були різноманітні продавці, які продавали мед, свічки з бджолиних восків та українські подарунки. Для відзначення цьогорічного святкування сторіччя Української Православної Церкви в Канаді 100-ий відвідувач базару - наша парафіянка Леся Ляшук - отримала особливий подарунок від нашого українського бутік. Багато присутних насолоджувалися гарячим смачним обідом борщу, вареників, голубців, капустою та ковбаскою. До кави/чаю були наші дуже відомі і популярні торти із маку та з моркви, а також інші солодощі. Весело пригравали музиканти Патрісія Мойз та Беверлі Попик.

Базар вимагає багато тижнів планування та підготовки. CHRISTMAS BAZAAR 2018 On Sunday, November 18, our Ladies’ Group (Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada – Ottawa branch)

hosted its annual Christmas bazaar at which over $6000 was raised to support our parish’s projects. Every

year, the Christmas bazaar in November and the Spring bazaar in March/April raise significant funds to support the financial needs of our parish. As in years past, the commitment, time and efforts of many volunteers helped make the event very successful. In the weeks and days prior to the bazaar, dedicated teams prepared 3,000 varenyky, 500 cabbage rolls, 100 litres of borshch, and dozens of lemon poppysed and carrok cakes. As usual, the bake table, take-home food and hot lunch were the most popular. There were a variety of vendors selling raw honey, beeswax candles and Ukrainian gift items, as well as the white elephant table of treasures. To mark this year’s celebration of the centennial of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, the 100th visitor to the bazaar – our parishioner, Lesya Lashuk – received a special gift from our church’s Ukrainian boutique. The many visitors enjoyed the a tasty hot lunch of borshch, varenyky, cabbage rolls, sauerkraut and sausages. And for dessert there was our very famous and much-in-demand lemon poppy seed cake and carrot cake, as well as other sweet treats. A nice touch was provided by the musical performance of Patricia Moise and Beverly Popyk.

The bazaar requires many weeks of planning and preparation. Ця традиційна перед-різдвяна подія є дуже популярна в Оттавські українській громаді та успішно заробляє кошти на підтримку наших парафіяльних проектів. Близько 160 гостей насолодилися гарячою вечерою борщу, вареників, голубців, ковбаси та салати, а потім морквяний торт – всі ручно вироблені нашими кулінарними добровольцям. На концерті після вечері різні колядки були виконані нашим соборним хором, Українським чоловічим хором Оттави АКОРД, цимбалістом Романом Тикайлом та жіночим ансамбльом Коліжанки. Безмовний Аукціон містила багато цікавих скарбів, багато з них української тематики. Дякуємо багатьом добровольцям які допомогли, щоб знов Пироги і Коляди був успішним та приємним для всіх.

PYROHY & KOLIADY 2018

On Sunday, December 9, our parish hosted its 14th annual Pyrohy & Koliady event in our church hall. This traditional Christmas season event is popular in the local Ukrainian community and raises funds to support our parish projects. About 160 guests attended the event where they enjoyed a hot meal of borshch, varenyky, cabbage rolls, kobassa and salad, followed by carrot cake – all hand made in our church kitchen by our teams of dedicated culinary volunteers. A variety of Ukrainian koliady and Christmas carols were performed by our cathedral choir, Ottawa’s Ukrainian Men’s Choir AKORD, dulcimer player Roman Tykajlo, and women’s folklore vocal ensemble Kolizhanky. The Silent Auction table contained a variety of interesting articles, many of which were Ukrainian artistic pieces. Thank you to the many volunteers that helped make the Pyrohy & Koliady again successful and enjoyable for everyone

If you happen to be in a Ukrainian home in Dauphin, Manitoba or Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in Perth, Australia or Prutendopolis, Brazil, or in the “Green Triangle” near Vladivostok, Russia, in the Carpathian Mountains or in Kyiv, you will be sitting down to that special and reverent Sviata Vecheria in basically the same way as Ukrainians everywhere. And that power of centuries and millennia of tradition, of family, of heritage, and the ancestors, is with us in the same way.” – Orysia Tracz in the Preface to her book First Star I See Tonight: Ukrainian Christmas Traditions, Mazepa Publications, Zhuravli Ltd., 2015

For Ukrainians, Christmas is the most important family holiday of the whole year. It is celebrated solemnly, as well as joyfully, according to ancient customs and preserving traditions that have been passed from generation to generation. Ukrainian Christmas traditions are based not only on Christian traditions but also on pre-Christian pagan culture and religion. The Ukrainian society was basically agrarian in those times and had developed an appropriate pagan culture, elements of which have survived to this day Christianity was introduced into Ukraine in 988 A.D. At that time, the flourishing pagan culture and its traditions were too deeply rooted in the population that did not allow the Church to eradicate them completely. Therefore, the Church adopted a policy of tolerance toward most of the ancient customs and accepted many as part of the Christian holidays. In this way the ancient pagan Feasts of Winter Solstice and Feasts of Fertility became part of the Christian Ukrainian Christmas traditions. This is why Ukrainian Christmas customs are quite unique and deeply symbolic. Ukrainian Christmas festivities begin on Christmas Eve (January 6 on the Julian calendar, December 24 on the Gregorian calendar) and end on Holy Theophany (or Feast of the Epiphany) (January 19 on the Julian calendar, January 6 on the Gregorian calendar). The traditional Christmas Eve dinner – Sviata Vecheria (Holy Supper) – brings the family together to start the Christmas celebrations. The rituals of Christmas Eve, many dating back to antiquity, are dedicated to God, to the wellbeing of the family, and to the remembrance of the ancestors. With the appearance of the first star, which represents the Star of Bethlehem, the family gathers to begin the dinner. The table is usually covered with two tablecloths, one for the ancestors of the family, the second for its living members. In pagan times, ancestors were considered to be benevolent spirits who, when properly respected, brought good fortune to the living family members. Under the table, as well as under the tablecloths, some hay is spread to remember that Jesus was born in a manger. The table always has one extra place setting for the departed family members, whose souls, according to belief, join the family for Sviat Vechir. A kolach, the Christmas bread, is the centerpiece of the table. The word kolach is derived from the Ukrainian word “kolo”, meaning circle, which is a very old symbol of good luck, eternity, prosperity, bountiful life and general welfare. The kolach is formed into a braided ring, and usually three kolachi are placed in the centre of the table, one on top of the other, with a white candle inserted in the center of the top kolach. The candle represents Christ who is the Light of the World and is also a reminder of the Star of Bethlehem. The three kolachy symbolize the Holy Trinity and the circular form represents Eternity. The kolachy are not eaten during the dinner but rather remains as a symbol of Christ who is the Living Bread who nourishes our souls.

RIZDVO – Ukrainian Christmas

A didukh (meaning grandfather) is a sheaf of wheat or mixed grain stalks. It is placed under the icons in the house. In Ukraine, this is a very important Christmas tradition because the stalks of grain symbolize the family’s ancestors, and it is believed that their spirits reside in it during the Christmas holidays. The didukh remains in place during the entire Christmas period. To start the dinner, the father or head of the household places a bowl of kutia, a pudding made of boiled wheat kernels mixed with poppy seeds and honey, on the table. Kutia, also called the food of the gods, is only made for Sviat Vechir and is the most important food of the entire dinner – everyone must have at least a taste. The father then offers each of member of the family a piece of bread dipped in honey, where the bread had been previously blessed in church. He then leads the family in the opening prayer. After the prayer the father extends his best wishes to everyone with the greeting Khrystos Narodyvsia! or Khrystos Rozhdayetsia!, meaning Christ is Born!, and the family sits down to the Christmas Eve dinner consisting of twelve traditional dishes that commemorate the twelve apostles (also, from pagan rituals, represent the twelve lunar months). Sviata Vecheria is the last meal of the 40-day Nativity Fast before Christmas and consists of dishes that are meat-free and dairy-free (that is, totally vegan) to show respect for the animals that shared their place of shelter and were present for the birth of Christ. The meal on Sviat Vechir consists of very traditional foods, made of ingredients that are plentiful in Ukraine. The menu consists of all or some of the following dishes:

- kutia, a cold dish made of boiled soft wheat kernels, poppy seeds and honey, is always the first course

- borshch (beet soup) with vushka, which are small boiled triangular-shaped dumplings filled with chopped mushrooms and onions

- a variety of fish dishes – baked, broiled, fried, cold, jellied, fish balls, pickled and/or marinated - a variety of varenyky filled with potatoes, cabbage, buckwheat - meatless holubtsi, cabbage rolls, typically made with buckwheat - hryby (mushrooms) - kvasolia (mashed beans) - kapusta (sauerkraut) - uzvar, a cooked compote made of twelve different types of dried fruits, also called God’s Drink - sweet varenyky filled with a prune or poppy seed filling - traditional baked goods such as medivnyk (honey cake), makivnyk (baked strudel filled with poppy

seeds), horikhovnyk (baked strudel filled with ground nuts), medivnychky (honey cookies), pampushky (fried doughnuts, plain or jam-filled), and khrustyky (fried ribbon cookies).

MALANKA – New Year’s Eve Malanka is a Ukrainian folk holiday that is celebrated on the evening of January 13th that is New Year’s Eve in the Julian calendar. Malanka commemorates the Feast Day of St. Melania. In Ukraine, this night was filled with a carnival atmosphere with carolers traditionally walking from house to house playing pranks or acting out a small play with a young man dressed in women’s clothing leading the troop. Malanka caps off the festivities of the Christmas holidays and is often the last opportunity for partying before the solemn period of Great Lent which precedes Easter.

NEW YEAR’S DAY According to the Julian calendar, New Year’s Day is January 14th. This day commemorates the Feast Day of St. Basil and the Circumcision of Christ. According to the folk tales, New Year’s Day is set to predict the rest of the year. From early morning children visit each home “sowing” grain out of a glove in each household. The children sing special songs and wish the household well saying “For happiness, for health and for the new summer, o God, send a harvest of rye, wheat and crops of all sorts.” Usually, the “sowers’’ are invited

to sit down “so that everything good may sit: hens, geese, ducks, bees and matchmakers”. In the morning, the hay that was left on and under the table at Christmas is burned. The smoke from the burning of the hay usually envelops trees of the orchard, and the trunks are bound with the hay so that they may bear much fruit.

HOLY THEOPHANY Holy Theophany on January 19th commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan by St. John the Baptist and the manifestation of God in the Trinity – the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. On that day the faithful attend a Divine Liturgy followed by the Great Blessing of the Water ceremony during which three special candles are immersed in the water to remind us that through Christ’s baptism our sins are destroyed and forgiven. The faithful attend this service to be blessed and to receive the Holy Water that they take home in small bottles. Some communities hold outdoor services by a body of water such as a lake or a river. In our church, we hold an evening prayer service on January 18th followed by the Blessing of the Water and then a community Feast of Jordan dinner. A Great Blessing of the Water also occurs the next day, on January 19th, following the Liturgy for Holy Theophany.

Blessing of the home with Holy Water is a yearly tradition that happens in the weeks following Theophany and typically ends before the start of Great Lent. To prepare for this blessing, ensure that the house is clean and tidy, with the lights on in every room. Select a location in the home that will be the centre of the blessing, typically the dining room or kitchen table. The priest starts the service by reading a prayer and commemorates the living and departed members of the family. He will then walk through the house, sprinkling the four corners of each room with the Holy Water and blessing the home with the grace of the Holy Spirit that also protects the family from evil spirits. Although ideal, all family members do not need to be present for the blessing of the home. The items needed for a home blessing are as follows:

1. Prepare a list of the first names of those family members for whom you wish to pray when the priest arrives, with the living and the deceased listed in separate columns.

2. On the dining room or kitchen table, place a lighted candle, an icon of Christ or a Theophany icon, and the prepared lists of names.

3. Turn on a light in each room so that the priest can see where he is going. 4. Turn off all TVs, computers and tablets, radios and music. 5. Do not use your cell phones (turn off or place on vibration mode). 6. Secure all pets to ensure that they do not get underfoot as the priest walks from room to room. You may ask

the priest to bless your pets too. 7. When the priest arrives, everyone in the house should gather around the table and join in the singing of the

litany responses and troparion. 8. The children may lead the priest around the house, from room to room, holding a lit candle, if parents permit.

The custom of carolling is highly developed and widely practiced in Ukraine. There are two kinds of carols – koliadky and shchedrivky. Koliadky are festive, ritual songs sung at Christmas time, while shchedrivky are sung on New Year’s Eve. Both types of carols have retained traces of their ancient origin, particularly to the cult of the sun, of ancestor worship, of nature worship, and of the faith in the magical power of words. Koliadky and shchedrivky depict scenes from farm life and express the desire for good harvests, prosperity, good fortune, and health. They are remarkable for their wealth of subject matter and motifs, which vary with the person who is addressed and praised in each carol. There are carols dedicated to the master of the house, the mistress of the house, the young bachelor, the girl, the daughter-in-law, the son-in-law, and so on. The carols dedicated to the master of the house deal with the farm work – they glorify prosperity, the happiness of a well-off farmer, and his wellbeing. The songs for the young bachelor depict his strength, courage and good looks. The carols for girls praise their unmatched beauty, wisdom, deep love, diligence, and respect for parents. The descriptions of prosperity, beauty and wisdom are magical incantations intended to secure the described effects. The most important aspect of carols is their wish-fulfilling power.

By their age and content the carols can be divided into several groups: 1/ the oldest carols, which deal with the creation of the universe in a pre-Christian dualistic, mythological framework; 2/ a later stratum describing life in the Princely era, 3/ carols about daily life, and 4/recent carols which have a biblical theme – Christ’s birth, the shepherds, the three wise men, Herod. The Kyivan Mohy la Academy was famous for its new carols, which were composed in the 17th - 18th century. Some carols were also composed by the monks of the Pochaiv Monastery in the 18 th century. The process of Christianization embraced the whole content of koliadky and shchedrivky. In some carols the ancient agricultural themese are fused with more recent religious themes, as in ‘V poli, poli pluzhok ore…’ (In the Field the Plow is Plowing). As poetry, koliadky and shchedrivky are remarkable for their artistic quality. They are distinguished by their joyful spirit, festive air and melo dious tunes.

BAPTISMS – Parents must arrange a personal meeting with Father Ihor to make arrangements. Godparents must be practicing Orthodox Christians. Baptizing a child in the Orthodox faith presupposes that the child will be raised as an Orthodox Christian.
