WHAT IS CANCER? Cancer is the general name for more

than 100 diseases in which cells in parts of the body begin to grow out of control.

In a normal cell the cell grows under control and knows when to die and when to repair its own self.

Cancer cells Vs. Normal cells

Cancer cells

Cancer cells grow at a accelerated rate and do not die when they should because they are missing the messages being sent to them to stop dividing and growing.

Normal cells

Normal cells grow, die, and divide at a normal rate and while younger your cells grow, divide, and die faster so you can grow.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING NORMAL CELL DIVISION

During cell division cells go through a process known as mitosis. There are 5 parts to mitosis.

Interphase-Cells increase size and DNA doubles.

Prophase-The membrane around the cell pops.

Metaphase-The chromosomes meet in the middle.

Anaphase-Chromosomes move apart.

Telophase-The cells tear apart into new cells.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING CANCER

During cancer cells grow out of control and do not receive messages of when to stop dividing, when to die, and when to take a break. Cancer cells are mutated cells that are working against your body. They can win because they do not follow the order to die when they are supposed to. Cancer cells there fore out last healthy cells.

CANCER TREATMENTS

OTHER CANCER TREATMENTS

Acupuncture

Stem cell transplant

Biopsy

Breast reconstruction

Chemotherapy

Chest x-ray

Colonoscopy

Treatment for cancers vary by the type of cancer. For example, doctors use radiation to kill cancer cells, shrink tumors, and help dull certain cancer related side affects.

WHAT IS HEART CANCER

Heart Cancer is an extremely rare form of cancer that is divided into primary tumors of the heart and secondary tumors of the heart.

Primary tumors of the heart-Tumors that arise from the normal tissues that make up the heart.

Secondary tumors of the heart-Either the spread of a disease from one part or organ to another different part of the heart, or diseases from the surrounding tissues of the heart.

SIDE AFFECTS OF HEART CANCER

Side affects are similar to those of heart disease including:

Chest pain-Pain in your chest

Irregular heart rhythms-Irregular heart beat

Shortness of breath-Difficulty breathing

Fatigue-Being tired and being mentally exerted

WHAT CAUSES HEART CANCER

Heart cancer is a result of heart tumors turning cancerous. Most of the time these tumors are sarcomas.

Sarcomas-Any of the various tumors that become worse and worse with more progression composed of cells around the heart tissue.

HEART CANCER TREATMENTS

Chemotherapy-used to manage symptoms and kill cancer cells.

Diet Counseling-Help keep them strong and healthy.

STANDARDS

1c Students know how prokaryotic cells, eukaryotic cells (including those from plants and animals), and viruses differ in complexity and general structure.

9b Students know how the nervous system mediates communication between different parts of the body and the body’s interactions with the environment.
