“I tell you that you must forgive not seven times, but seventy times seven.”

Matthew 18:22

St Augustine said the following about our Gospel for this weekend.

The Lord puts the parable of the unforgiving debtor before us that we may learn from it. He has no desire for us to die, so he warns us: “This is how your heavenly Father will deal with you if you, any of you, fail to forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

I have to be honest; in writing this column for this bulletin, I struggled. Not because of the readings although they are challenging and demanding, but because they are overwhelmingly about forgiveness. Forgiving someone is really hard, and interestingly, allowing ourselves to be forgiven is equally or even harder. What I’ve discovered because of unforgiveness is that “hardness of heart can lead to twisted directions.” Just reread the parable in our Gospel and you’ll see what I mean.

As I see it, freedom is a precious thing! What does freedom look like, or what does freedom feel like? It may be hard to recog-nize, but if we are unable to forgive, then we have literally placed ourselves into a self-induced prison unable to break the chains that bind us.

There is an interesting story from a Greek writer named Nikos Kazantzakis that helps to demonstrate

this sense of freedom. When he was a younger man, he meets an elderly monk on Mount Athos. The story goes like this:

Kazantzakis, still young and full of curiosity, was questioning this monk and asked him: “Do you still wrestle with the devil?” “No,” replied the old monk, “I used to, when I was younger, but now I’ve grown old and tired and the devil has grown old and tired with me.” “So,” Kazantzakis said, “your life is easy then? No more big struggles.” “Oh, no!” replied the old man, “now it’s worse. Now I wrestle with God!” “You wrestle with God,” replied Kazantzakis, rather surprised, “and you hope to win?” “No,” said the old monk, “I wrestle with God and I hope to lose!”

What this story shows us is that God loves us deeply, and he wants the best for each of us, and in the end, we need to forgive God and that might be the hardest forgiveness of all. It’s hard to accept that God loves everyone equally – even those we are unable to forgive, the ones we hate, the ones who hurt us deeply or those who said very unkind words to us. St Augustine said it best: “There are two works of mercy which will set us free. They are briefly set down in the Gospel in the Lord’s own words: “Forgive and you will be forgiven, and Give and you will receive.” (Mt 6:14) “The former concerns pardon, the latter generosity.”

Deacon’s Perspective by Deacon Dennis Bennin

Masks and the Mass

I’m sure that you are all aware of Governor Evers Emergency Order #1 mandating that face coverings be worn in all indoor public locations. At our three linked parishes, we will be doing our best to abide by the order of the governor. If you are unable to wear a face covering for particular reasons, we ask that you maintain six feet of physical distance between others in the congregation.

I realize that these are difficult times and that this mandate may be frustrating for some to follow. I urge all of us to remember that we are family and that if, by wearing these face coverings, we are allowing others to feel more safe and less anxious and thus

able to worship more fully, it is an act of love. Thank you for that act.

If there are any questions please call the parish offices for any clarification that you may need.

Physical Distancing in Church

You may have noticed that we no longer have tape on our pews to help us physically distance from one another. We will, however, continue to only use every other pew to help us maintain a safe distance while we pray.

At all three of our linked parishes, we have two colors of ribbon: one dark (purple/green) and one white. We ask that you sit in pews with the colored bow (purple or green) on Saturday and on Sunday sit in pews with white bows. Signs will be posted in church as a reminder.

Mass Dispensation Lifted

Following much careful consideration, the dispensation for Sunday Mass obligation has been lifted and beginning the weekend of Sept. 19 and 20, all Catholics will once again gather as a community of faith on Sundays.

The lifting of the dispensation was announced in a decree issued by Bishop David Ricken on Monday, Sept. 7. With this news, please note there are still occasions when the obligation to attend Sunday Mass does not apply:

- If individual Catholics struggle with serious healthconcerns or are physically or morally prevented fromworshipping at Mass for a grave reason

- If individuals are frail due to illness or age or, in their well-formed consciences believe that going into public places -- including Sunday worship at Mass -- would place theirhealth or the health of their loved ones in serious jeopardy

- If individuals are sick, or have been in contact withsomeone who has been sick

The faithful who are unable to attend Mass are urged tomake holy the Lord’s Day and to pray, read the Scriptures, watch a broadcast or livestreamed Mass and take part inacts of charity.

The obligation to attend Mass for Catholics reflects ourfaith in Jesus Christ, the blessing of the Holy Eucharist andan acknowledgment of His great love for us.

New Linked Parish Website!

The pastoral council, at the suggestion of our Prayer and Worship committees, has been assisting in the creation of a new linked parish website that is finally ready to go live. Visit it at www.threeparishesonefaith.org and give us your feedback. This website will replace each of our current websites that all operated separately. The old addresses will still work, however, and will redirect you to our new site. We hope you enjoy it and welcome any ideas to make it better!

You Tube Channel

We will continue to be uploading one of our Saturday or Sunday Masses on to our You Tube Channel on each of our websites. Not able to join us for Mass? Check out our website (www.threeparishesonefaith.org) and click on the You Tube link.

Finance Council Meeting

Members of our three linked parish finance councils are reminded of our upcoming meeting this coming Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Voland Hall (church basement) at Ss. Peter & Paul beginning at 6:30 p.m. We will meet jointly at the beginning before breaking up into our own individual parish meetings. All are invited and welcome.

Tuesday Morning Divine Savior Masses

Masses with Divine Savior students will begin Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 8:30 a.m. in the church at Ss. Peter & Paul. Because of their need to social distance from one another, they will be using the first 14 rows of pews on each side of the church. That will still leave 8 rows of chairs/pews in the church for parishioners (as well as chairs in the narthex) who wish to pray with the students. All are welcome – but we wanted to give you a heads up that with the students present it will be a little more close-quartered than it was without them.

Anointing of the Sick

Our next Anointing of the Sick will take place following the 7:45 am Mass at St. Ann parish on Sunday, Sept. 20 . This sacrament is for those who struggle with serious illness in their life or for those who are feeling the effects of age. Those who wish to participate in this sacrament will be instructed to stay in the worship space toward the front of church following Mass.

Cup O’Joe Podcast

There is a podcast link on Ss. Peter & Paul’s homepage (ssppkiel.org) which connects you directly to the audio version of a daily (M-F) Cup o’ Joe podcast. Joe reads the gospel for the day and a gives a brief reflection. If you listen to podcasts on your phone, you can also subscribe to Cup o’ Joe through iTunes or Spotify.

Adoration/Exposition of the Eucharist

If you are looking for a spiritual uplift, hoping to spend some quality time in prayer, or simply desirous to be in a familiar space with the company of parishioners, come spend an hour before the Blessed Sacrament. Mondays 4-5:00 p.m. (Ss. Peter & Paul), Wednesday 4:30-5:30 p.m. (Holy Rosary) and Fridays 4-5:00 p.m. (St. Ann) our church-es will be open for you to come, sit in silence and spend time in prayer. All are invited and welcome.

Visits & Prayer

Do you know someone in need of a pastoral visit or prayer? Please reach out to any of our three parish offices to let us know as we may not be aware of the situation. We would love to visit with any parishioners in need. Thanks for your assistance with this important ministry!

Friends of the Poor Walk/Run The annual Friends of the Poor Walk to help the local St. Vincent de Paul conferences will be held on Saturday, September 26. Sign-up forms and pledge forms are availa-ble in each wing of church. Walkers can designate which St. Vincent de Paul they wish to support on their form. If you can’t walk but would like to make a gift, gifts can be sent to the parish office and designate which St. Vincent de Paul Society you wish your gift to go to.

Grab & Go Food There are breakfast and lunch bags available at all three parishes for distribution through this program. The 'Food-to-Go' program that we started in spring is contin-uing to be available to anyone from our local parishes and communities. The program was initially starred as a means of outreach and concern for those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, but truly has a place for anyone in need. Simply take what you need. Or grab one for someone who might need it. If the supply runs low, we will restock. The individuals and families who may seek assistance or who would simply enjoy a little 'pick me up' will always be out among us. This is a 'mission' that you can be very proud of. The positive effects of this charitable act can be measured by knowing that we've packaged well over 500 meals thus far and that concerned individuals from the area have made generous donations of several hundred dollars to help subsidize food purchases. They can be found in the bins by the SS. Peter & Paul rectory front door, the rectory porch at St. Ann and the front entryway of Holy Rosary’s office. Spread the word.

Friends of the Poor Walk

This year’s Friends of the Poor Walk will be held on Saturday, September 26. Proceeds go to area St. Vincent de Paul Societies. Look for registration forms on the white table in the narthex if you’d like to participate.

Hail Mary Masks Our parish received masks and thermometers from the diocese when churches opened up for 25% attendance a few months ago. This week we received additional masks and thermometers through a grant offered by Hail Mary Masks. Thank you to the very generous donor who made these programs available!

While these programs are very helpful to us, we’ve had to purchase extra items due to the COVID-19 pandemic

that we did not anticipate. We will gladly accept donations of face masks, hand sanitizer and/or sanitizing wipes to help manage these extra steps put in place by the parish. Feel free to bring any donations to the rectory office during office hours; 9 am to 2 pm Monday-Thursday, Fridays by appointment.

The Kiel Area Community Food Pantry

The Kiel Area Community Food Pantry, Inc. is looking to fill vacancies in its Board of Directors. The pantry is an independent 501 (c) (3) entity. The Board oversees the financial and physical operation of the pantry and sets strategic direction. The board members serve as the liaison to our community.

Volunteer hours assisting with the weekly operation of the pantry are appreciated, but not required of board members. The only requirement is a desire to help those people in our community who struggle with food insecurity issues by helping the pantry secure the financial resources and donated product needed to serve our community.

For more information or to submit an application, please contact Randy Olm at 890-894-2357 or email [email protected]

It is part of CFL "Catholic Comeback" program to help Catholic parishes that are suffering from the effects of lower contributions due to low Mass attendance and the recession. Thank you for your generosity!

Feel free to drop your stewardship envelopes or any correspondence for the parish office if you’re here and the office is not open.

Those who attend Thursday Mass will be asked to sit in the pews with the green ribbons and Sunday attendees will be asked to sit in the pews with the white ribbons.
