The 5th Annual Celebrity Chef Challenge was held on September 19 in Bath, and raised over $21,000 to support our Meals on Wheels and other programs. Congratulaons to Chef Chris Toole from The Highlands in Topsham who nudged out Tim O’Brien from Enoteca Athena in Brunswick to take the top honors. This year’s event brought back these two returning champions from previous challenges—Tim O’Brien won the very first year we held this event (2013), and Chris Toole won in 2015, and was a judge in the 2016 event. Chef Toole’s winning dish incorporated a bistro fillet of beef, haricot verts, tomatoes, corn, and carrots. That very dish will now be replicated by Spectrum Generaons’ staff and incorporated into our Meals on Wheels program! Message from the Coastal Community Center

September 19 in Bath, and raised over $21,000 to support

our Meals on Wheels and other programs.

Congratulations to Chef Chris Toole from The Highlands in

Topsham who nudged out Tim O’Brien from Enoteca

Athena in Brunswick to take the top honors. This year’s

event brought back these two returning champions from

previous challenges—Tim O’Brien won the very first year

we held this event (2013), and Chris Toole won in 2015, and

was a judge in the 2016 event.

Chef Toole’s winning dish incorporated a bistro fillet of

beef, haricot verts, tomatoes, corn, and carrots. That very

dish will now be replicated by Spectrum Generations’ staff

and incorporated into our Meals on Wheels program!

Thank you to our generous supporters— sponsors, chefs,

judges, volunteer servers, and attendees, who made this

event a huge success!

Health Literacy Month

October is Health Literacy Month, a time to bring attention

to the need to write health information in an easy-to-read

format and using minimal jargon.

The theme for this year’s Health Literacy Month is “Be a

Health Literacy Hero.” It’s about taking action and finding

ways to improve health communication. Health Literacy

Heroes are individuals, teams, or organizations who not

only identify health literacy problems but also act to solve

them. You can help by recognizing and cheering on those

you consider as Health Literacy Heroes.

Did you know there is a website that has over 3,000

documents translated into 18 languages?

you get information that is confusing!

Health and Wellness Opportunities TNT Whole Body Fitness Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, 8:00 a.m.

A class that offers a total body workout using free weights, kettlebells, bands and balls combining all elements of fitness — cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility— with an emphasis on core, form and posture. Feel good, look good and have fun! Call for pricing.

FitMx for Active Agers Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:00 a.m.

A modified version of Tight & Toned that also offers a total body workout using free weights, kettlebells, bands and balls. For those who would like to sleep a little later but still get a great workout! Call for pricing.

EnhanceFitness Mondays and Fridays, 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, 10:45 a.m.

Using wrist and ankle weights, this evidence-based class helps older adults at all levels of fitness become more active, energized and empowered to sustain independent lives. A full hour of fun focusing on dynamic cardiovascular exercise, strength training, balance and flexibility. Walking may be the simplest way to work out and to boost your outlook on life. You can do it almost anywhere, and it’s a snap to get started. There are many great reasons to walk — your heart will get stronger, you’ll lower your blood pressure, and your bones will get stronger. Walking also eases stress, and can help you sleep better.

Walking is an ideal exercise when you're just getting started. You can go as fast or as slow as you need. Fall is the perfect time to join Robin for a lesson in walking for exercise and fun! Register to learn how you can turn walking in the great outdoors into a workout.

Living Well for Better Health This is a proven evidence-based self-management program originally developed by Stanford University and supported Spectrum Generations. Participants have less pain, more energy and fewer hospitalizations. Discussions and activities focus on dealing with frustration, exercising at your level of ability, working with your healthcare provider, setting goals, and much more. Participants are able to live the lives they want, and gain the ability and confidence to care for their condition.

Living Well for Better Health is a once a week program for six weeks, that is FREE!

A Matter of Balance Coach Training We will be offering a FREE A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls Coach training on Thursday, November 2, and Friday November 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Cohen Community Center.

A Matter of Balance is a nationally recognized program designed to encourage physical activity and reduce the fear of falling. Workshops are typically conducted in eight sessions over four weeks, meeting twice a week for two hours each, and led by experienced volunteer coaches, who can now be trained for free by Spectrum Generations.
