MD SpeaksWorld Health Day is celebrated on 7th April every year. It is a fact that despite efforts, accessible and affordable Healthcare remains a big challenge in developing countries. WHO estimates that half of the world’s population lacks access to basic healthcare and more than 100 million people are pushed into poverty every year due to ill-health and its associated costs.

Access to essential quality care and financial protection not only enhances people’s health and life expectancy, it also protects countries from epidemics, reduces poverty and the risk of hunger, creates jobs, drives economic growth and enhances gender equality. This is why, WHO is focusing on universal health coverage as the guiding vision for more than seven decades.

IPE Global with its strong health sector practice, is doing its bit to enhance health systems, develop alternate models and facilitate behavioral and social change for better health outcomes.

Health is a human right. Together, we can make health for all a reality.

Best wishes,

Ashwajit Singh

IntroductiotionToday, with an astounding number of reports about increasing lifestyle related diseases and health conditions, it is impossible to ignore the importance of fitness and well-being in our lives. It is of no surprise that the more you build a healthy body, more you develop a healthy mind. Holistic health is a philosophy of medical care that views physical, mental and spiritual aspects of life as closely interconnected.

April 7 every year marks the celebration of World Health Day that further signifies the importance of global health. The very slogan of World health day ‘Health for All – everyone, everywhere’ aims to bring health within reach of everyone by not just the availability of health services but also a state of health that enables a person to lead a socially and economically productive life.

Health is our primary capital asset and therefore to keep it running, a fit body has become a necessity. The benefits of an active, healthy lifestyle are undeniable. Equal is the importance of proper nutrition, sleep and mental well-being. Physical and mental health go hand in hand, thus making your body the best place to live in. As Wilhelm von Humboldt rightly states, “True enjoyment comes from the activity of mind and exercise of the body, the two are ever united”.

Remaining away from medicine and able to run with my kid are the two things that motivate me the most. The journey towards fitness started around 2 years back and besides the physical transformation, it has helped a lot in remaining mentally focused on short and long-term goals. Simple things to remember: its 70% what you eat and 30% how you burn it…if either is missing you would not achieve the desired results.

Once you see results, it becomes an addiction. Being committed to my healthy routine has helped me to stay fit as well as happy. Intermittent fasting has really helped me to lose weight way fast! And since then, my cravings for junk food has reduced

to quite a great extent. Having 10-12 glasses of water keeps me full and hydrated. Also, 3-5 km of daily walks keep me in good mood and in good health of course! Last but not the least, my real energy booster is the daily 30-minutes machine-less workout that I rarely miss upon!

Yesterday you said tomorrow.

How many times have you said, “I’ll do it tomorrow”? The time to start is now! Live in the moment and chase all of your dreams while you still can. My tomorrow came and is still continuing as I have long ways to go.

Being able to make it to gym five days a week boosts me enough to stay fit. I am more of a high-energy-exercise person. Kickboxing and Cross-fit exercises help me exert sufficient and release all the extra calories I consume on my cheat days (because, who on earth doesn’t crave for cheat days?!) But at the end of the day, it’s about eating good and exercising super-good!

I believe that a healthy/ fit body has nothing to do with body shape. How better can I do with my body and mind, is what pushes me to work on myself every day! I start my day with a 2 kms run, a 30 minutes yoga, and at least of three Sudoku/ Puzzle solving, and end my day with a 3-4 kms of run, 40 minutes of cardio, and a good read. Eating

right in quality and quantity makes a lot of difference. I drink lots of water, and also meditate before I sleep! I am currently learning ballet dance form that covers balance-on-toes and leg stretching activities very powerfully. Apart from this, I don’t take weight lifts, I only lift weights!

H-H: Health is directly proportional to Happiness! Happiness keeps me motivated to keep myself healthy. Till now I have been experiencing real time challenges to fathom my capabilities and realize my potentials at various phases of my life. Happiness is the ultimate key to successful life. Without health there is no happiness and without happiness there is no success!

When someone tells me, “Watch your steps, Himanshu”, I really do. My first rule to becoming fit with every day passing is to keep a check on the number of steps I make- at least 10,000 steps a day. My summers come with swimming and winters come with Gym sessions. Also, cricket/ football on weekends keep me totally charged up! Besides burning calories, I am particular about WHEN to/not to take calories—Body clock is must if one wants to be fit in a long run.

I try to embed my fitness exercises into my routine as much as possible. Zumba and yoga are my first go-to when it comes to “How do I become stronger and fitter than I were the last month?” The push to become fit may come from others who are fitter, but to keep going with it, is really your OWN job.

Considering the hectic lives we lead, I try to stick to an easy-to-follow but effective fitness regime: get in as much machine-free, body-weight-based and cardio training as schedule allows and avoid eating saturated fats or carbohydrates after sundown. However, when we speak of fitness, a healthy mind is as important as a healthy body. So, I make it a point to find time for activities which relax the mind and help manage stress. Mental health remains a neglected and often stigmatized subject and so I hope more of us include it in our conversations about fitness and well-being.

My routine takes off early morning when I hit my gym, regulate my cardio and weight training, five days a week! I have started taking dance classes (three days a week) -- a combination of Kathak, Lyrical Hip Hop and Jazz dance forms. This really helps me get in full power and persuades me to stay super-active! I also ensure an hour of walk during my office hours, in bits and

pieces. Can’t skip on the days when my maid is on off and I work harder with mopping and cleaning my house, which apparently happens at least twice a month!

I have always dabbled into sports and fitness but mostly it was sporadic and eating healthy was never my focus. And then one fine day that small voice which was always there just became loud enough. That’s when I started my wellness journey to discover a better version of myself.

I am a dance enthusiast and practice contemporary dance form twice a week, apart from that I walk daily for about 3-4 km and do rigorous exercise at least three times a week. Fitness without focus on proper diet can achieve only half the result, so I also ensure that I eat balanced nutritious diet every single day with limited cheat days.

Time for Some Deskercises! If you are worried about your body fitness because your 9-5 job has taken all the space, here are some of the easy exercises that you can perform seated at your work place. Let’s start!

Interlace your fingers and reach up towards the sky, as high as you can … keeping your palms facing up towards the ceiling.

Reach for the Stars

Drop your chin down towards your chest and GENTLY roll your head from side to side.

Bobblehead

This one stretches out the glutes. With your right ankle on your left knee, gently press against the right knee a few times. Of course, after you’re done with the right side, be sure and give the left side some love, too.

Knee Press

Sit up tall and drop your right ear down towards your right shoulder (you don’t have to touch it!) and hold for a few seconds and repeat for the left side.

Rubber Neck

Turn your head the left and try and look over your shoulder and hold for a few seconds … repeat on the right.

Look Around

Page 9: HEALTH DAY - IPE Global Limited€¦ · routine has helped me to stay fit as well as happy. Intermittent fasting has really helped me to lose weight way fast! And since then, my cravings

Raise both shoulders up towards your ears and hold for a few seconds and release. Repeat a few times for good measure.

Shrugs

Bring your hands behind your back, press your palms together, sit up tall and hold for 5–10 seconds.

Chest Opener

Sit up tall and extend your right arm all the way up towards the ceiling. Straighten your left leg out and raise it up as you bring your right arm down and try to touch your left foot. Do 8–10 on each side.

Seated Toy Soldier

With a bent knee, lift your right leg up and grab it with your arms and pull it in as close to your chest as you can. Hold for 5–10 seconds and make sure and do it on the left side, too.

Knee Hugger

Extend your right arm over your head and reach out as far as you can to the left and gently bend over. Hold for a few seconds and do it the other way.

Reach and Bend
