The Faculty’s global presence is reinforced by the participation of students and staff in a

range of development initiatives, cultural projects, overseas conferences which promote

greater understanding and interaction with a worldwide audience.

Faculty of Health and Social Care is involved

in the Kisiizi-Chester Project, which aims

to develop long-term links between the

Church of Uganda Kisiizi Hospital, in

Uganda, the Countess of Chester Hospital

and the University of Chester. It enables

all the institutions involved in the project

to share skills, knowledge and compare

approaches to healthcare management

and education. The project aims to make

a diff erence in transforming the lives

of 250,000 people living in the rural

communities and improving their long-

term prospects.

Second-year students, Claire and Beverly,

completed a two-week placement in

India as part of their degree programme.

Beverley, who is studying for a BSc in

Child Nursing, said: “We both have a real

interest in a global health and decided

to do our placement in India because

healthcare workers practice a lot of

holistic care, which is very diff erent from

the practices we use in this country; it

is very much focused on preventative

measures. It was very interesting to see

the diff erences between Indian and UK

healthcare systems.”

“Studying at the University

of Chester has been both

challenging and extremely

rewarding. I have enjoyed my

time here and have

little money and often cannot aff ord to

pay for education or healthcare. I started

volunteering at the age of 10, helping out in

an old people’s home, and since then have

always wanted to help other people.

I started my Nursing course in 2006, around

the same time we set up ASR Charitable Trust.

I chose the University of Chester because

the Faculty of Health and Social Care has a

Nursing student dedicates life and learning to Punjab charity.

I arrived at Chester fall 2011 to start my MSc in Public Health at the

University of Chester already having a good impression from the

application process. Throughout the application process and after

receiving my letter of acceptance I got plenty of help, answering

all my questions and supplying me with all the information that

I needed. I still fi nd that the University of Chester has a friendly

approach towards international students, with help always available.

I have found that there are few diff erences between studying in

Sweden and England. The major diff erence for me has been to study

several modules at the same time, something I have not been used

to from home. I chose to study abroad to get a better impression of

the public health fi eld and to enhance my possibilities to start my

career. University of Chester is helping me to do that; to inspire me

and boost my skills to get the job I want in the future.

I am very grateful for the opportunities that the University of

Chester have presented me with and in encouraging me to

continue in public health research and apply for PhD studentships.

I have had the opportunity to study at a great institution in the

beautiful, historical city of Chester, whilst also enjoying the social

part of the university life as well. I am a member of the Chester

Women’s Basketball Team and I have made many new friends

from all over the world, which just have made my experience even

better. I would recommend anyone to apply for postgraduate

studies at University of Chester as it is a great institution with all

the resources that you need as a postgraduate student, as well as

off ering a range of extracurricular activities.

University of Chester is very proud of its commitment to

teaching and promoting the student experience. Our ultimate

goal is to promote an optimum learning experience, which

can only be achieved by providing a friendly, supportive and

stimulating environment in which to learn. We have developed

an appropriate infrastructure to respond to the requirements

of both home and international students. We work closely with

local public health organisations to ensure the currency and

relevance of our programmes, and to ensure that students learn

from people with current experience in the fi eld. We actively

promote the integration of international and home students

into the life of the institution, creating a positive experience

so that all can truly benefi t from the cultural diversity of the

student population.

I have worked at the University of Chester for more than fi ve

years. I have a mixed role which includes teaching and research.

My research interests are mainly in epidemiology, social

epidemiology and public health ethics. I have been involved in

several international research projects, and my work has been

published in international peer-reviewed journals. I use aspects

of my research in all the modules that I teach.

Prior to joining the University of Chester, I worked for several

institutions; the warm atmosphere of the Faculty of Health and

Social Care is something I have not experienced at any other

institution. At the University of Chester we do it together.

MSc Public Health John Okikiolu

2928

My name is John Okikiolu and I am from Nigeria. I did my fi rst

degree in pharmacy and have worked in diff erent fi elds of

pharmacy since then.

When deciding where to study, I checked and contacted several

schools but my choice of the University of Chester was based on

a combination of factors. Most important of those factors was

the response and support I got from the international offi ce in

making an application. My enquiries were answered promptly

and in great detail. Another key factor in choosing university of

Chester was the location of the university. Chester came across

to me as a city that will be peaceful and away from the ‘buzz’ that

will be associated with cities like London or Manchester. Such

environment will support good learning and distractions will be

minimal. The cost of the course was also very attractive when

compared with similar institutions in the UK.

The most enjoyable thing I have found about my course is the

level of personal attention given to each student by the tutors.

The adequate attention has helped me to settle down faster

into the UK system of education which is quite diff erent from

what I had during my undergraduate days in Nigeria. The tutors

were also very approachable and I didn’t fi nd it diffi cult to walk

into any of their offi ces if I had anything to discuss. The lecturers

always succeed in stimulating the students’ interest in the

subject matter, making use of very recent and contemporary

issues to achieve this.

Settling down in the UK, particularly Chester has been very easy

for me because people are friendly and always ready to help.

The series of programs organized by the international welfare

team has also been very eff ective in helping international

students socialize and make friends from all across the globe.

I am proud to say I now have American, Indian, Malaysian,

Ghanaian friends and it has been fun interacting with them and

learning their diff erent cultures and lifestyles. This is in addition

to my numerous British friends.
