“Since receiving your letter I love you”These words could be the start of a love story, but instead, Dr. Rudolf Hauschka’s declaration to Elisabeth Sigmund marked the start of Dr.Hauschka Skin Care. That was back in 1962.
The Viennese chemist, Dr. Rudolf Hauschka, established WALA in 1935 to manufacture anthroposophical medicines and dietary juice remedies using a completely new rhythmicprocess. In the early 1960s he wanted to extend the range to include special skin care products that would fit in with the company’s ethos. He wrote to Elisabeth Sigmund, a cosmetologist, also originally from Vienna. Her reply contained such original ideas and new approaches to skin care, that Rudolf Hauschka invited her to Eckwälden.
Original ideas for a special form of skin careElisabeth Sigmund did not hesitate long. She packed her bags and left Stockholm for Eckwälden. A competent working group consisting of pharmacists, chemists, anthroposophical physicians and cosmetologist Elisabeth Sigmund came together in a phase of intense productivity to develop the new ‘WALA’ skin care products. By 1967 they had been developed. The initial range appeared on the market, at that time under the German brand name ‘Kosmetik-Präparate nach Elisabeth Sigmund’, later to become known as Dr.Hauschka Skin Care.

Cleansing face careAlmond meal has exceptional powers to bind grime and cleanses the face right down to the pores. But because pure almond meal just runs through the fingers, Elisabeth Sigmund suggested a formulation that contains the whole ground almond in combination with almond oil, wheat-germ oil and medicinal herbs, such as kidney vetch, chamomille and calendula, which have beneficial effects on the skin. This gave rise to a creamy paste – Dr.Hauschka Cleansing Cream. When developing her skin care products, Elisabeth Sigmund thought back to her mother’s cosmetics in Vienna. She had a little porcelain jar containing almond paste that she used for cleansing her face.
Dr.Hauschka Cleansing Cream contains additional skin-strengthening medicinal herbs and also has lipid-replenishing action. It is tenside-free and has a particularly intensive cleansing action. Kidney vetch, jojoba oil, almond oil, apricot kernel oil, extracts of oats, rye and wheat are included in the likewise tenside-free Dr.Hauschka Cleansing Milk, for use on the most sensitive faces and particularly for removal of make-up. Gentle make-up removal with Dr.Hauschka Cleansing Milk followed by cleansing with Dr.Hauschka Cleansing Cream leaves the skin clear right down to the pores.

The purple cone flower – Echinacea pallidaThe scientific name Echinacea is derived from the Greek ‘echinos’ meaning hedgehog, and aptly describes the prickly looking and rather hard flower head of this plant. We have the Native Americans to thank for our knowledge of the purple cone flower. They have traditionally used it for medicinal purposes. In Dr.Hauschka Clarifying Toner the flower complements the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory actions of its medicinal herb composition.

Refreshing oil-free careIn some ways Dr.Hauschka Skin Care turns the world on its head. A fortifying toner containing extracts of herbs, used in the morning and evening after cleansing, is nothing out of the ordinary. But not to use a night cream and finish the cleansing routine with our water-based Facial Toner at first seems incredible! However, anyone who has experienced the positive changes this produces in the skin needs no more convincing.
Undisturbed beauty sleepYou may wonder what lies behind the concept of oil-free night care. The idea is to encourage the skin to supply its own requirements. The medicinal herbs in the oil-free night care products help it to do this. The kidney vetch and witch hazel in Dr.Hauschka Facial Toner support the skin’s functions during the night, the time when it regenerates itself. Kidney vetch – Anthyllis vulnerariaKidney vetch is not thought to have attained importance in Germany until the 16th century. Folk medicine appreciated it for its wound-healing properties, used it in teas for coughs and valued its laxative and diuretic action. Because of its balancing effect on skin functions, kidney vetch is a key plant in Dr.Hauschka Skin Care and is to be found in many of the face care preparations and decorative cosmetics.

Daytime protectionIn the 1950s Elisabeth Sigmund followed her instincts; to study kidney vetch (Anthyllis vulneraria) and tested the plant in care products she manufactured herself. Her intuition proved right: the meadow flower – almost unknown at the time – was to become the most important medicinal herb in Dr.Hauschka Skin Care products. How to use Rhythmic Night Conditioner:In keeping with the regenerative cycle of the skin, use Rhythmic Night Conditioner several times a year for a period of 28 days for oil-free night care, in place of Dr.Hauschka Facial Toner or Dr.Hauschka Clarifying Toner. As a rule of thumb use one course of ampoule treatment a year for each 10 years of your age, e.g. 3 courses a year for someone aged 30.

Daily facial cleansing is crucial for a clear complexion, but sometimes it is just not enough. Whether we are exhausted and our skin reacts with blemishes, or whether the skin is at a stage of its development when it is easily irritated, for example, puberty, we can help our skin by special cleansing. Dr.Hauschka Facial Steam Bath opens the pores and dissolves impurities. Daisy, nasturtium and witch hazel support the skin’s natural processes of elimination. An intensive programme for your skinSome time ago the Dr.Hauschka Estheticians approached WALA with a request: They wanted a face mask that would support regeneration of the skin. In response, the product developers at WALA created Dr.Hauschka Rejuvenating Mask. The Estheticians tested it and were thrilled with the results. The composition of apricot kernel oil, jojoba oil, extracts of quince seed, kidney vetch and borage help all skin conditions find their natural balance. Dr.Hauschka Rejuvenating Mask stimulates the skin’s natural activity and helps it to preserve moisture. It is also very effective for sun-stressed skin and broken capillaries.

What does ’Sun Protection Factor‘ mean?The sun protection factor (SPF) tells you how effectively a sunscreen protects against UVB radiation. A sunscreen with SPF 10 means that the length of time you can stay in the sun without burning is ten times longer than it would be without protection. UVB radiation is the main cause of sunburn. A product with an SPF 10 blocks 90 % of UVB radiation, one with SPF 20 blocks about 95 %. Sunscreens with higher SPF‘s only provide minimally more UVB protection. So lotions with SPF 20 or 30 give sufficient protection even for small children, provided that parents follow the recommended guidelines to prevent over-exposure to the sun.

Everyday body careThe Dr.Hauschka product developers pay a lot of attention to the fragrance of their products.They create their own mixtures of natural essential oils. This is what gives the fragrance of each Dr.Hauschka Skin Care product its own particular note. Each has its own, individual fragrance composition, from the Dr.Hauschka Rose Body Moisturizer, the Dr.Hauschka Quince Body Moisturizer and the Dr.Hauschka Lemon Body Moisturizer to the Dr.Hauschka Body Oils.
In the eight Dr.Hauschka Body Oils, individual essential oils of lavender, rose, lemon, rosemary, blackthorn or St.Johns wort lend the nurturing oils soothing, stimulating, harmonising or fortifying properties. She stayed for a year and she brought back with her knowledge of a medicinal plant unknown in Germany at the time: neem. Sustainable management for natural qualityManufacturing natural skin care products that are of a consistently high quality and available at all times is particularly challenging. Renewable raw materials require long-term planning and conscientious quality testing. Our gardeners cultivate many medicinal plants in our own biodynamic garden. Any components purchased externally undergo stringent quality testing. Wherever possible they are obtained from biodynamic or certified organic sources or are wild-harvested.

The WALA medicinal herb gardenA medicinal herb garden on the heavy clay soils of the Swabian Mountains? The farmers of Eckwälden looked very sceptical when WALA started searching for a plot of land for their new project in the 1950s. Rudolf Hauschka purchased a boggy meadow at the foot of the mountain, directly behind the construction site for the new company building, which WALA gardeners have been cultivating ever since using biodynamic methods. After many years the soil became crumbly and easy to work. Today the gardeners grow more than 150 different medicinal plants for the manufacture of WALA preparations on an area of more than 4.5 hectares. Butterflies, dragonflies, toads and fire salamanders have made their homes amid the water lily pond, stream, beehives, meadows and woods.

What is biodynamic agricultureThis method, developed by Dr. Rudolf Steiner in 1924, regards the garden as a more or less closed system. Most of the seeds, compost and potting compost are self-produced. Rhythm – the heart of Dr.Hauschka Skin CareDr.Hauschka quality is based on the use of choice ingredients, but the way in which we prepare the individual components is of at least equal importance. Rhythm plays an important role here.
Rhythm carries lifeDr. Rudolf Hauschka, WALA’s founder, had a key experience which was crucial in determining his subsequent scientific and philosophical path. In 1924, during the anthroposophical summer conference in Arnhem (Holland), he met Dr. Rudolf Steiner, the founder of anthroposophy. Many of the conversations between the two men centred on the question: what is life? Steiner’s answer was: ‘Study rhythms, rhythm carries life.’

Hauschka took this idea on board and developed a manufacturing process in which he incorporated the rhythms of Nature. Even today, we at WALA still use this process to obtain water-based medicinal plant extracts that remain stable without the use of alcohol. This is also how the essences of medicinal herbs are obtained, which are used to make Dr.Hauschka Skin Care products, and contain all the vitality of the plants. It was the two processes which play an essential part in the rhythmic manufacturing process which gave WALA its name: Warmth and Ash, and Light and Ash.
Rhythmic careOur skin has its own rhythms. For example, over a period of 28 days all the cells of the surface layer of skin are completely renewed. The skin functions differ during the day than during the night. Dr.Hauschka Skin Care products support these rhythms and thus stabilise the skin’s natural activity. The oil-free night care is adapted to the needs of the skin at night. In the Dr.Hauschka Treatment the Esthetician stimulates a harmonious flow throughout the body. She gives the skin and the organism a regenerating impulse. The holistic Dr.Hauschka Body Treatment gives the client a rhythmic impulse from the tips of the toes to the top of the head. The result: an expression of harmonious vitality.

Medicine from Nature: WALA MedicinesOur story begins in 1935. This was when Dr. Rudolf Hauschka established the WALA company and started producing WALA Medicines. Today this original brand includes around 1000 different medicines for acute and chronic diseases, plus remedies for self-treatment of minor ailments such as tummy upsets, eye and ear problems, colds, minor injuries and many more. They are based on the principles of anthroposophical medicine and consist of medicinal plants and natural substances which have been prepared using a rhythmic process developed by Rudolf Hauschka (see also page 64).
WalaVita Natural products for health and wellbeingIn 2004 a third brand, WalaVita, was developed by WALA. The new brand represents natural products for health and well-being. In collaboration with experienced physicians WALA first developed the WalaVita holistic dental care range. Brine from Bad Dürrenberg and sea salt obtained by traditional methods from the Algarve coast, together with selected medicinal plant compositions containing neem, tormentil and witch hazel, to name just a few, give the toothpastes and mouthwash their own special character.
