Headline August 2010 Issue 3 A note from the Chair Hi and welcome to the first edition of Headline for the new regional committee. I would like to start by saying a big thank you to all the departing committee members. During their term of office they have given up so much of their time and energy; they really have helped the regional committee grow enormously and achieve so much. Each of them will be missed. The new committee has several new faces, who I hope you will all get to meet at some point over the next few years. Our task is to build on the good work of the previous committee. Our first chance to do this is this year’s lifelong learning event; ‘Measuring Our Success’, which is due to be held at York St. John University on 10 th November. Tickets are on sale now, so for more information please get in touch; [email protected] The committee is here to work for you. For the first time the committee is hoping that the event can provide the opportunity to showcase the work of OT’s within the region. Attending the BAOT regional group meeting: A student’s perspective

Attending the regional BAOT meeting as a second year Masters student, I did not know what to expect. The meeting was structured and to plan and the environment was relaxed and open for any contributions. I was delighted to hear about the success of our region and felt very proud of what they have achieved. A member was present from the College of Occupational Therapists and members gave constructive criticism to be fed back to London. The meeting gave the opportunity to hear about upcoming events such as the Life Long Learning event, Disability North East event and the next Student conference to be held in December in Carlisle. Ideas were welcomed for these events and it was interesting to see how ideas for these events are created and delegated within the meeting. Members gave a lot of ideas and support to each other. All in all this was a very enjoyable day. It is an opportunity to meet a wide and diverse group of people, get insight into upcoming events and the organisation, decision making and planning that goes into these, even to contribute ideas. Attending this meeting gives the opportunity to see the hard work and dedication in the region and just the amount of things that are happening that are way outside the scope of what we see as students. The day was relaxed, humorous and most of all productive. I came away feeling very enthusiastic about becoming an Occupational Therapist in this region.

Service Improvement In Practice

The Wheelchair service for North Yorkshire and York Community and Mental; Health Services has recently been involved with the AHP Service Improvement Project. I say recently because with a change of Government the project has reached stage 2 and been put on hold, but work in the service continues. We were four services that merged in 2006 with different staffing levels, different geographical areas, differences with provision and long waits for routine and specialist chairs. A lot of work had already been done by the

staff to provide unity to procedures. As clinicians we were all aware that a lot more work needed to be done but it was too big to be managed on top of clinical work. The Community and Mental Health Service for North Yorkshire and York’s service development team had already started to be involved with the Wheelchair service when the opportunity through the AHP service Improvement Project arose.

The project: - ‘Adult and Children’s Wheelchair services: Improving the services we deliver to North Yorkshire and York Health Community’. It is an ambitious project but one that we felt needed to be completed in its entirety. There is a focus on the 18w RTT, maintenance and provision. The projects have been supported by training events, individual site visits, email and telephone contact. It has felt that time scales for work to be completed for the project have been very tight. The project has helped us to keep focused and encourage the whole team to invest in change rather than a few members coming up with a solution. Change can always seem scary for a team, however it is also challenging the service and individual teams to look at how we can develop, change and move things forward. The AHP SIP may have been put on hold however our service improvement will continue as we aim to provide the best service for our clients.
