Our Open Day took place on Wednesday 30th September and it was wonderful to see so many of you there alongside new parents. Morning visitors were taken around the school by 8AMD who acted as very informative tour guides. The feedback we have received, both written and verbal, was extremely positive. Our visitors always comment on how well our students speak so articulately and proudly about our school.

In the evening the displays in classrooms ranged from the scientific and fiery to the dramatic. We had entertaining and interactive displays in all our subject areas: an International Café, Friends of Ham feeding visitors to the MFL rooms, the National Rotary Club Young Chef Competition, a variety of sports on show, rehearsals for our school production ‘Oliver’ and our Science team brought science to life with entertaining and fact filled explanations of all things scientific. The Maths department created a human scatter graph, our CAD and ICT suites were full of students working hard and interested parents watching them design and create. Our Humanities team put on a whole host of activities from Facebook detecting to digging for artefacts in history. Our English team, using the theme of National Poetry Day 'light', asked visitors to write a metaphor about light onto a flame and add it to the poetry fire. As everybody's creative writing was added to the bonfire it created an overall metaphor for learning. On a creative note, our art rooms were full of students and visitors taking part in the National Big Draw Competition...what an evening!

Our visitors praised our students maturity, smartness, courtesy and smiles. Our students are our best advert; we know that we will yet again have the high numbers of applicants for places in Year 7 for next September.

For the last two years, IGS has had a great deal of success using the skills of William ‘Billy’ McGown. An ex-professional boxer, trained fitness professional and counsellor, Billy works with a number of students who have been carefully selected according to their identified individual needs. Billy worked alongside John Wells, an Educational Psychologist and together they looked at the emotional, social and psychological benefits, of a boxing regime.

Billy spends time getting to know the students, working through their emotions and identifying how he can help and support them individually. He helps students understand the importance of fitness and a healthy lifestyle regime, including diet, exercise and an understanding of physical and lifestyle issues. He also helps them to identify and make proactive lifestyle choices and raises awareness of the balance between physical and emotional fitness in order to achieve a student’s full potential and desired goals. The benefits of his sessions for the student, using boxing as a therapeutic tool, are stress relief, anxiety prevention as well as providing a safe and controlled environment for anger to be released, and increased emotional resilience. He provides the students with strategies to cope with stressful situations, promotes their self-awareness and awareness of others as well as enhancing their confidence and self-esteem. Some of the benefits we have seen include: positioning students to put them in a ‘better place’ to access their education; breaking down barriers to learning, and students’ focus is improved and concentration increases.

One Year 8 student said of their sessions with Billy...

The Write Stuff Newly published crime fiction writer, Alison Baillie, talked to students in our creative writing club this week. Alison, accompanied by her friend Rowena Harbour, are both ex Ilkley Grammar School students from the class of '65. They were thrilled to be back and delighted to take questions from our budding young writers. Alison talked about her inspiration for her novel 'Sewing the Shadows Together' which gets its title from a line in DH Lawrence's poem 'Bat'. She first came across the poem in an English lesson at the school!

As Alison and Rowena walked back to reception they commented on how intelligent and perceptive the students were in asking their questions. Amongst other memories, Alison also reminisced how her older sister had once rescued Alan Titchmarsh from the school swimming pool!

Some of our Post 16 Business and Economic students attended the ‘Thrive Yorkshire’ event at The Craiglands Hotel last week. The event is in its second year and is a Business Growth Conference.

The event included a Q&A session about ‘Positive Image’ led by Tina Boden, co-founder of Enterprise Rockers with our A Level students. It was a terrific opportunity for our students to see the variety of businesses in the Yorkshire region. The curriculum links to branding and marketing in the presentation have enabled students to really see how these principles operate in the community. Hopefully the speakers and the event in general gave them a taste what goes on in the world of small business.
